Jets Prospects

Kyle Connor has 48 point in 27 games an average of 1.7787 points per game .

Dylan Larkin had 47 points in 35 games for the same team last year for an average of 1.343 points per game .

Jack Eichel had 71 points in 40 games in his last year of college for  an average of 1.775 points per game .

I see Connor making the team in the fall and actually signing in March and getting a couple of weeks on the Jets roster at the end of the season.

I am hoping to see Connor on one wing with Wheeler or Ehlers or Armia on the other wing with Scheif or Matthews at center.

Going forward... Connor Scheif Wheeler Armia Ehlers and Matthews/Laine/Puljujärvi look like a pretty solid top 6 for a few years.

Lemieux, Roslovic, Petan, Copp, Lowry, Harkins, De Leo,  Lipon, and Spacek will be fighting for roster spots sooner or later.

We have Comrie and Helle and Phillips for depth in goal and look to be set for some time.

Our D, on the other hand, needs some help on the depth. Besides Morrissey, there isn't much coming up the pike on the left hand side and I fully expect the Jets to take some LHD at this draft or trade for one by this time next year. There is Sami Niku and not much else. The RHD right now is very good but not a great deal coming up the pike. Hopefully Kostalek makes the team in at least a 3rd pairing position and hopefully Glover and/or Poolman and/or Nogier turn out.

I have hopes for Poolman and Glover to at least come up and be on the Moose next year.  I like their size, as opposed to Toby Dinklage.

You must have loved Kyte.

and Shawn Cronin too!  Babs was my favorite though, still don't know how that trade for Neufeld ever got approved.  Hartford really pooched us on that deal.

Babych asked for the trade, what was Fergie to do?

Neufeld was horrible and Peluso has WAY better hands than Neufeld ever did.

If Babych had a mean streak, he would have been talked about in Norris conversations.

Babych asked to be traded to Hartford?  That's not what I read.  I read that Smith convinced Fergie to do it purely to sabotage him and take his GM job.  That was what Fergie seemed to think, IIRC.  It's been a long time, so my memory is a bit foggy, but I know Smith was the one who wanted Babych gone, for reasons unknown.

Babych asked for a trade, not specifically Hartford. His marriage was breaking up and his wife was seeing Donny Lalonde on the sly. He found out and asked for a trade....he was devastated.

Jets Trade Babych for "Stone Hands" Neufeld

November 22, 1985

Once thought to be the cornerstone of the franchise, Dave Babych is no longer a member of the Winnipeg Jets.

Yesterday, Vice President and General Manager John Ferguson traded his once highly-coveted defenseman to the Hartford Whalers in exchange for Ray "Stone Hands" Neufeld.

"It was a very difficult decision to make," said Ferguson. "It was something we felt we had to do, but it wasn't easy. We still think David Babych is going to have an outstanding career in the National Hockey League, but in order to get someone of Ray's ability, you've got to give something up, and today, we gave up David Babych."

Coming to the Jets is St. Boniface native Ray Neufeld, bringing with him an established reputation for his lack of finish around the opponent's net and little else.

"Ray is someone we've been after for a while now. Our scouts have spoken well of the young man, and how well he would fit in with our program, " added Ferguson. "Ray will give us added depth up front where we need it right now. We have plenty of mediocrity on our blue line, but we needed someone like Ray to bring our complement of forwards up to that level. Ray will fit right in and bring that type of mediocrity that we're looking for. We expected that, in order to give up someone of David Babych's caliber, the player we received will have be out of the league in three or four years and playing in some senior league, and we think we have that kind of player in Ray Neufeld."

Babych was originally the second overall selection in the 1980 Entry Draft, but in recent times, had fallen out of favor with the organization and failed to live up to the hype and level of expectations that followed him to Winnipeg from the junior ranks.

"I'm kind of shocked right now," said Babych. "I wasn't aware that I was being shopped around, but I guess I was. It's a little unnerving, but that's business side of pro sports, you just have to deal with it."

"I'm quite excited to be coming to Winnipeg," said Neufeld. "I spoke to Mr. Ferguson on the phone and he told me that they've been pursuing me for some time and was pleased that they will finally able to make a deal with the Whalers to bring me to Winnipeg. I know they thought highly of Dave Babych, so I know they must have wanted me. Of course you don't want to be traded, but at least you know the team that traded for you really wanted you. Hopefully my luck will change and I'll be able to hang on for a few more years in the league. I hope to be able to contribute to a solid third-place finish in the Smythe Division for the Jets. Mr. Ferguson told me that's what they're shooting for this year, and hopefully we can get there. Maybe we can even win a playoff game."

Neufeld was originally selected by the Whalers in the fourth round of the 1979 Entry Draft and spent his first full season with the Whalers in 1982-1983.

Dumping Fergie after 7 straight playoffs years doomed the club.

weren't Babs and his bro married to some hot blonde twins?  I remember them always doing commercials for Skinners wet and wild water slides.

KBF, If you can get your hands on Thunder and Lightning by Fergie, he talks about that trade a bit. It is a good read and has some behind the scenes stories.

They were married to the Buffy twins from Selkirk, MB......

Anyone that knew her, knew the marriage wouldn't last.

Was this a more complimentary word in '85 - or was Sr Fergy just that candid?

I don't think that was the actual quote.  Someone must have changed it.  I read online that it was Abe Lincoln in 1846 who advised that you can't always believe everything you read on the internet.

pashaw.  I'm from Manitoba.  Only buy my books at used book stores.  You can't haggle down the price of a used book from $3.25 to $2.00 on an internet site.

Wab Kinew understands.

How does that question go? Can you imagine...

Coaches, Paul Maurice included, love to talk about having as many centres as possible up front because most of them are able to make the transition to the wing, if needed. If by some small miracle the Jets were to land prized prospect Auston Matthews, the Jets could open 2016-17 training camp with Scheifele, Matthews, Bryan Little, Adam Lowry, Michigan star and Hobey Baker finalist Kyle Connor and Andrew Copp at centre and also have Mathieu Perreault, Alex Burmistrov and Nic Petan and Chase De Leo ripening on the farm.

Perreault and Little, FYI, would the oldest of that group, both at 28.
