Bombers hire Queens DC Pat Tracey as Special Teams Coordinator

Per Madani...

His bio from Queens website:

Pat Tracey joined Queen?s in 2000 as Special Teams Coach and Recruiting Coordinator, and moved to his current post in 2001, becoming a full-time assistant to Coach Sheahan in 2008. Tracey is recognized nationally and internationally as a defensive specialist, and is the dean of current OUA defensive coordinators. In 2011, the Gaels defence did not concede a single rushing touchdown in the regular season. He enters the season with 105 career wins as a CIS defensive coordinator and the CIS leader with 14 career shut-out victories.

Tracey has mentored many exceptional defensive players during his time at Queen?s, including four CIS award winners, eight OUA award winners, 39 conference All-Stars and 16 CIS All-Canadians. The Gaels defence has lead the OUA in several categories under his guidance including number one ranking against the Run 5-times, Pass 2-times, Overall 5-times and Scoring 4-times). He has coached the East team in recent CIS East-West Bowl games, serving as DB coac in 2003, Defensive Coordinator in 2004, and Special Teams coordinator in 2005, 2007 and 2008. Tracey was the Special Teams Coach for Canada at the 2007 Global Football Championship, held during the week of Super Bowl XLI, which the Canadians won for the third straight year. In 2009, he guided the Gaels defence to a Vanier Cup championship, as they finished as the top defence within the OUA.

Tracey has also been deeply involved in coaching at the national level, as he was the Defensive Coordinator for the Eastern Ontario U-17 team at the Football Canada Cup, winning bronze medals in 2005, 2006 and 2007 and capturing a gold medal in 2009.

Prior to joining Queen?s, Tracey coached with the Guelph Gryphons from 1987-97 and 1999.

At Guelph, he held numerous positions including Defensive Backs and Return Units (1987-88), Inside Linebackers and Return Units (1989-90), Defensive Coordinator (1988-94), and Special Teams Coordinator (1996-97). He was the team?s recruiting coordinator from 1995 until leaving for Hamilton in early 1998. He coached in three Yates Cup finals with the Gryphons, winning two.

Tracey spent the 1998 season on a leave of absence from Guelph, and joined the Hamilton Tiger-Cats as Special Teams Coach, on a staff led by CFL legend Ron Lancaster. Hamilton advanced to the Grey Cup with his assistance, losing the championship on a heart-breaking, last-second field goal by the Calgary Stampeders.

Tracey started at defensive back from 1982 through 1986 with the Guelph Gryphons, winning the team?s most improved player award in 1982, and a Vanier Cup in 1984. He saw action as a punt returner, leading the team in 1983. In 1986, he was the football nominee for the Mitchell award as the Male Sportsman of the Year. Tracey was a team captain in 1986, and was named to the Gryphon Team of the Decade in 1989 at cornerback. He holds the school?s record for the longest fumble return (61 yards, set in 1983), and most games played in a career (51). Tracey is also ranked second in Guelph?s history for games started, with 49.

Tracey is a native of Foxboro, Ontario, and resides in Kingston with his wife Denise, and daughters Devon and Darby.

after our experience on offense with an American guru, I for one applaud going Canadian on the coaching staff. Let's hope that it works out. I'll be cheering for him for sure, always good to see Canad

And he should leave an up and coming team that just went to the Cup because?

More money, opportunity to be Assistant HC, and because he likely meshes better with O'Shea more than the ever-autocratic Kent Austin.  Plus the fact that a successful overhaul of the Bombers will make all of these guys' resumes look sterling.

Some what idealistic.....and money and a jacked up title to inflat an ego are not always a measure or professional success and satisfaction.

Money alone is no reason to move... but the other things can be in play as well.  Maybe he works well with Austin, maybe he doesn't.  Maybe Austin's his kid's godfather... maybe O'Shea is... I have no idea.

But you asked why he might leave Hamilton.  They are all palatable suggestions.

I'm not buying that Hamilton is "up and coming".  Winnipeg was "up and coming" in 2011 and then fell apart.  Without Burris winning the games in the nice weather days of July, August and Sept I don't know where Hamil-smell will end up this year.  It's all about the QB.

Well, Chris Jones was the poster boy for leaving the Stamps to go coach with his BFF Scott Milanovich while under contract to Calgary. And just to make it better, Scotty gave his BFF the title of Associate HC & more scouting duties along with more $$. Jones couldn't leave Calgary fast enough. So yeah, just because.... Argos wanted Jones & made it worth his while. I bet this kind of thing goes on every year not just in the CFL but in the NFL & NCAA as well. It's called The Old Boys Club.

Are the Ti Cats really an up & coming team? If Dan LeFevour was the Ti Cats qb, they'd be lucky to win 6 games. Hank won a lot of games for them. He also lost a few as well.

I certainly believe so, they were one of the youngest teams last season and have a heckuva Head Coach, something Winnipeg hasn't seen in awhile. Rumours are continuing to swirl that Collaros is priority #1 for Austin this off season. Winnipeg on the other hand is in full rebuild mode yet again, probably a couple-few seasons away to becoming known as an up and coming team again.

What is the source of these rumors of Collaros going to Hamilton?

That's the thing, there is no source, they're only rumours.

Rumours that insinuate Austin is willing to go into a season with no veteran QBs in his QB arsenal.

And admitting that the QBs he does have, Masoli, Brohm , LeFevour, & McGee can't be as good as another non-vetaran (Collaros).

Burris did a lot to advance the cause of the Ti-Cats.

The question would be…does Austin have the belief they could get as far without him?

But where are the rumors coming from? I've seen nothing on the Ticats message boards to suggest this. I've heard nothing from the Ticats beat writers either. Seems the only source of the Collaros to Hamilton rumor is this forum.

There are other fan boards and at least one of them has mentioned it, but loath am I to give it any credence because, as I said, they are only rumours, no source.

If Hamilton decides to move on from Burris, I think it's obvious that their first choice would likely be Collaros. And there have been rumours for awhile now that Hamilton might not be re-signing Burris, so it's not hard to put two and two together.

K. With all honesty,.which team do you truly pull for, bombers or calgary? You seem to have a lot of "red coloured glasses" moments when it comes to the stamps and take great offense when a perceived slight happens against them... Doesnt change my opinion of you or my respect for ya.. Just really curious..

We better not lose Collaros to Hamilton.  That would just tick me off.

Me too.. Tho hank would be a decent enough booby prize..

pun intended!

I wouldn't be mad if we got Hank, but I'd just rather have a younger guy we can develop.

Oh me too, dont get me wrong... Hank would.be a much better bridge to a new gun slinger then buck was minus the extra year or 2.. But ideal situation is we gey collaros and he is the real deal..

A combo of Burris and Willy would soften the blow of missing out on Collaros.

Burris in any capacity would make it a lot harder to cheer for this team so just say no to Burris. I think I can honestly say I would rather suffer through another season like last season than cheer for Burris.

Burris? On our team?

Only if there was an end game to it and a reason for it.

In other words, if we fail in our attempt at a starter, a la Zach-man or Willy,  and we go with a newbie, then I would have to be brave and wait for him to mentor a younger guy.

And yes I chose the word 'brave' for a reason.

If Burris is the best option then we should sign him. It's stop gap.... maybe just for a season but he would make us better. A year from now we'd be in the same situation we are now. Looking for a long term starter. Can't go thru what we went thru last season again.

I don't know why people automatically assume that if Hamilton tries to pursue Collaros that they will get him and we won't. As with anything else it will likely come down to dollars and term. No reason to believe we can't make a better offer than Hamilton.

I'm starting to get a little nervous. Where would you rather go ...to a team that just went to the Grey Cup or the circus Winnipeg has become? Not just about dollars and term.

Really you would rather have Boltus or Pierce at the helm???

Burris is a tool but he's light years better then anyone we have had since Glenn...
