25/26 CFL (Non Bombers) Off Season Thread

Is this ever a guy we should take a run at? I really like Pokey as a receiver but not sure he's a 1A Superstar guy... Would you ever take a run at Hatcher as your #1 and then have Pokey and Demski as 2/3?

I hate change. This is going to take me like a year to get used to.

Can confirm - ran it through Google Translate and this is what came back:

  • Brady is the most complete running back in the CFL full stop. Rushing, receiving, blocking, no one does it all as well as he does.   Now that doesn't automatically make the contract he got w

But his situation was a bit different as the Bombers were compensated for releasing him after he was drafted by the Chiefs.

At his age that leg injury was devastating & a career ender. Let's see what he brings to the table as a coach.

What if his name was Jake Thomas.

Same as Thomas. I've told you I don't agree with more & more inexperienced players coaching at the pro level when you have coaches at U Sport who have more experience that don't. It's done because of the coaching cap. Teams can hire them for cheap.

Cfl tone deaf af, last thing we need is more changes. We have too many big changes coming already. It’ll be impossible to tune the change planned if they keep compiling changes on top of that.

An American Draft is something I like. I.ve been saying that for years. The Neg List is a throwback to another time. Leave qb sneaks & the last 3 minuts for each half ALONE.

Neg list is far superior to an American draft IMO. It rewards your scouting as opposed to a draft which is voodoo when guys may never have an interest in coming north.

Draft is an event they can market I am sure is the logic but it doesn't help the game.

As a CFL scout, my negotiation list would be the top 10 NFL prospects I ‘researched’ on the internets, turn it into my boss and let them know any questions let me know I’ll be ‘working’ from home. What a gig.

This is the thing for me with an American draft and (imo) one of the reasons why there is so much turn over on the neg lists.  If these guys get drafted and then say no thanks to playing in the CFL, what was the point of drafting them?  As it is now, if the team holding neg list rights gets told the player has zero interest in the CFL, they can just drop him and add someone else.

Guys on Neg Lists may have no interest, either. It's a throwback to a league that was run like a Mom & Pop organization in 1967.

as have I....That be one of the more smarter things they could do reallly

and your scouting would be key for a draft...just like the CDN draft, and probably more often than not most guys on a Neg. list have no interest either, and at times nary a clue they even on a teams neg list...At lest f a draft is published potential guys would see it and pique their interest...It would also pique interest in guys who didnt get drafted by any league but wanted to play, to possibly get an agent to contacy yeams in Canada

I know first hand tons of players I work with,  who were declined NCAA opp's for grades..conduct...etc and go the JUCO route who could play up here and have no clue at all about the C.F.L....And same can be said too with a lot of the NCAA guys

So then you remove the guy and move on to the next one.

If the Gm's want a draft then it'll get changed. I like a draft. Booch is right, It'll be up to the team scouts to get it right which means giuys like Danny Mcmanus have to work harder. It's also professional. It piques interest from the fans. We have a Global & Canadian draft yet not a US one which is a strange. Just a weird tribute to the way The Greatest Generation's Ralph Sazio, Norm Kimball  or Earl Lunsford did business back in 1967. Instead of having 3 drafts you have one. Or keep the Canadian Draft separate & combine the Global & American to keep it at 2. Does any other league in any pro sport have a similar negotiation list where players namessuddenly appear & disappear? None that I know of. Time to get with the times.

Im not sure it would draw that much interest...there are so many Americans. How do you decide who goes #1? How do you ensure the guy who goes #1 actually wants to come? How do you decide who is able to be drafted at all? It would be weird to put effort into a draft only to have a bunch of guys get cut. I just dont see how it be anything but a gimmick.

The football world is incredibly more dynamic than it was in the 60's/70's.

I agree. That's also what the Canadian draft is about, but to a lesser extent. Finding those quality Canadian players who will probably not be going to the NFL.

Interest in American athletes and scouting agencies and agents...it would also pique interests of some new non fans...if anythibg may look into what cfl is..and yes possibly become fans

And you dont need to determine who a #1 could be...u determine who/what you may want via scouting and team philosophy...and then claim your pick...if still there...just as when neg list guys u previously had wanted to only find they on another teams..and if they don't wanna come...they don't come..hence why prior to draft and during your seasonal scouting maybe you reach out and indicate we may draft you..and if no nfl opps come for you..would you come up? Basically do some due diligence

How many guys in the Cdn draft dont come..or fight coming until basically no chance in hell the nfl dream is gonna materialize? Same thing

And if you ain't trying to get better and get exposure...wtf u doing then? Isn't that a gripe around here that we as a league aren't thinking outside the box or looking for ways to promote? Yet when some ideas come about...the whiners piss on it...smh at times

Where most times than not the true gems do anything and everything not to play here...so the difference is??

No difference at all. I'm questioning whether doing more of the same would work?

That's all part of being a scout & doing due diligence. Making sure that potential players drafted would sign with a CFL team. No one in the CFL will draft Fernando Mendoza but they may draft Justin Lamson.

How many American players worth drafting would consider the CFL at that point in their career though?  We often see guys sit on neg lists for years before they come up (if ever) because they have no interest in playing anywhere but the NFL.  You already get that with a handful of players in the Canadian draft but a US draft would be absolutely full of this.

If they can get enough American players to declare for a CFL draft then it could work but I don't see that happening or being successful.  Maybe it might work in conjunction with the neg list (IE: keep the neg list but have a draft for some top rated/well known players who might get generate some buzz)?

Wish the CFL could pay players (2nd, 3rd stringers) more than they make on NFL practice rosters, that would be outstanding imo.
