CFL - Pre-Season - All Your Non-Bomber News/Talk - 2023

Better get this one going...

2023 RATIFIED RULE CHANGES

The requirement for the ball to be touched prior to ruling a rouge on a kickoff has been removed.

  • This change aligns the rouge rule on kickoffs with all other types of kick plays.

A safety has been added to the options for holding in the team’s own goal area.

  • When a team commits a holding foul in their own goal area while in possession of the ball in their goal area, a safety has been added to the options available to the other team.

The defensive formation has been restricted on kick plays.

  • The number of players within two yards of the line of scrimmage on either side of the long snapper has been restricted to a maximum of six players at the snap.
  • This restriction does not apply if the offence lines up in an unbalanced line or if an offensive player moves or motions from their initial position.
  • This restriction only applies to field goal and kicked convert attempts.
  • This change is in the spirit of player safety to avoid grossly overloading the defensive line on one side of the long snapper.

Avoidable contact with an official

  • It shall be illegal for a player, or an authorized member of a team bench area, to make avoidable contact with an official.
  • This includes providing a safe workspace by keeping the sidelines clear during play. Officials cannot properly officiate a game if their attention is being diverted to the sidelines in hopes of avoiding collision or injury.
  • When an official is contacted by a player, or an authorized member of a team bench area, officials will be permitted to check with the command centre to assist with a judgment as to whether contact was “avoidable” and if so, a 10-yard objectionable conduct penalty will be applied.
  • This change will allow the officiating staff to call these actions confidently with command centre help. It will also bring much needed attention to the requirement of providing a safe workspace for officials.
  • This change complements and builds upon existing rules regarding contacting officials that may result in ejections.

Move the drive start position up five yards in additional scenarios:

  1. Section 5A – If a kicked ball strikes the goal post assembly in flight and when Team B intercepts a ball or recovers a fumble in their own goal area, the next point of scrimmage will be the 30-yard line.
  2. Section 5B – Penalty applications with fouls in the goal area will be applied from the 30- or 15-yard line dependent upon the foul.
  3. Section 6C – When a penalty or ruling awards possession of the ball to the opponent, the point of possession will move up 5 yards.
  4. These changes align the drive start adjustment made in 2022 with other scenarios.

Teams cannot have players wear 0 and 00

Players shall be identified by the following numbering:

  • Eligible receivers will wear numbers 0 or 00-49 and 70-99.
  • Ineligible receivers will wear numbers 50-69.

Having two players on the same team wearing 0 and 00 creates significant issues with the statistical and scouting systems the teams deploy. This change allows only one player from each team to wear the number 0 or 00.

Phillip Blake and Godber don't to me look like addressing much..

I honestly feel the same. Blake is not particularly good at OT, and Godber vs Clark is basically a push. I don't really see the improvement unless the RIders have found two stud IMP OTs in the offseason. That's where any improvement will have to come from.

Was this a Joe Mack pick?? What a waste of a 1st overall pick lol. We took Dobson 2 picks later.

No this was not a Joe Mack pick although it seems like one.

Oh my...the infamous Darrell Davis kiss of death.

It’s insane how they made that point and missed the giant elephant in the room and source of the toxic waste heap. Also how is their ol fixed? They went with their 5th choice oc after getting rejected by every one. 5 win team. Less if Harris goes down.

Don't read too much into anything Darrell Davis says, he only shows up at the Rider stadium for the free donuts. The guys is literally out to lunch on pretty much everything he says about the CFL.

Did Sask really not address their o line? I forget what their off-season moves were. Maybe that says it all.

They brought in a couple new faces. Pretty tough to call anything improved in any way unless they have recruited 2 game ready stud IMP OTs...because that was the biggest part of their problem last year. Blake could help a bit if he doesn't have to play OT, but Godber is no improvement over Clark and the matadors of the middle Johnson and Ferland still look to be starters at this point....and that is not good.

All jokes aside?  With exception of Trevor Harris,  who did they bring in to replace the massively depleted depth and sub par starters?    It wasn't like the team was only a few players away from being great.   That team needed a complete overhaul.

When Jake Weineke is your top weapon on O....yikes.

I 100% believe that Harris is a much better fit for them than CoFaj.

If they are actually self-aware, and plan and around their offensive weaknesses, they can certainly be better than Edmonton, Montreal, and Ottawa and make the play-offs. That's their absolute ceiling, however.

I think its boom or bust. Harris can be an improvement but only if the OL has improved as well (which is not looking likely) but if the OL is garbage Harris will be worse than CoFaj because he had little to no mobility. I guess, he might improve the depth of sacks surrendered in the latter because he won't run 15 yards backwards first...but that's not much of a consolation.

Shane Ray signed with the Buffalo Bills today. Thought he was solid in Toronto during his time there.

Solid, maybe.

Didn't think he'd get another NFL shot at age 30.

The state of the CFL in Alberta right now is a little concerning. Calgary is quickly becoming a tire fire, and Edmonton with a multi-million dollar loss....yikes.

In Calgary it's an ownership issue. Murray Edwards doesn't care. He spends little money on the team. It would be a good thing if he sold the team.

I'm gonna disagree. Bo absolutely folds under pressure.

No, Other than Kadeem Carey their offense sucked with a subpar receiving corps & Mitchell's shoulder was blown out.

Last season Calgary lead the league in points scored and by a decent margin as well.

Ever since his shoulder went to ****, Bo hasn't looked like he's got the same confidence and craters when pressured. There are many examples but the 2019 WF stands out brightly....

Only by 24 points over the Bombers. The Stamps must have done it with smoke & mirrors because their receivers weren't that good. .

If he played in pain then it's understandable. Like, who knows what went on in the inner sanctums of the team away from reporters. It sure didn't look like Dickenson cared when he benched Mitchell last season or when he signed with the Ti Cats in the off season.

Another thing to remember is that the bombers took their foot off the gas with a few games to go as well. No one else was resting any where near as many starters.

I would personally call that a tie.

If you ask Derek Dennis, there was definitely smoke.

I looked at the standings ,  I guess those factor in the other types of scores.   Either way   CGY did not struggle on offense which was the main point.

The main point is that whoever said that Calgary had a struggling offense outside of Carey was clearly incorrect.

Fair, but points scored wouldn't be the determining factor in that. Passing yards/tds would be.

Thats true, they were still a solid offense.

The 3rd string QB also had a high amount of QB sneaks in for TD's.   Who knows on those specific drives if they made their way down the field with passing plays up until the goal line and then plunged it in.

Getting back to the original point BLM isn't a guy who cracks under pressure.   Nowdays that isn't even a big factor for him,  physically his body has deteriorated and is a way higher liability.
