I'm starting this thread as a side discussion of all things Corona Virus related. I understand that this is going to be discussed in almost all other topic threads but we could collect news and other items here. 

 

At work, many conferences have been cancelled.

NBA - Suspended.

NHL - About to be suspended. 

NCAA March Madness - Playing - no crowd. 

 

Political Rallies have been cancelled. 

Travel bans. 

 

Rita Wilson and Tom Hanks tested positive. They're in Australia where testing is available. If they were in the US, they wouldn't have been tested.

I also think Manitoba has done well, but I’m worried about who is on our borders - Ontario and the Dakotas.

Yeah the second wave could be trouble.  If Manitoba is able to keep things locked down we’ll be alright but the pressure is going to be on to re open. Will the feds extend CERB and everything else to next spring?  I doubt it.  So there has to be a re-opening and a reluctance to close of a second wave hits.  It’s going to be tough.

The feds can’t keep on loaning billions and paying people not to work.  Eventually inflation will go through the roof, our dollar with drop, and our credit rating could be in serious trouble. 

Just to play devil's advocate, aren't the numbers for North Dakota among the lowest in the US? Aren't the numbers for Western Ontario relatively low as well? That said, am good with our borders being shut down.

This is, by definition, a global pandemic. Damned few countries and economies are or will be free of the effects, and governments will have to choose between massive death rates or deficits, and I think that most people will choose the deficits with the attendant higher taxes. But then, that's socialism, isn't it? Unless taxpayer moneys are used to prop up businesses, some of whom have managed to avoid paying any sort of taxes but still line up at the trough.

Point(s) taken.  I think we will see governments choose a blend of both.  For example - I don't think we'll see Manitoba completely close the schools again.  I just worry about who is ultimately going to benefit from all this money being borrowed that will have to be paid back.  I think we all know the answer...

Yes, North Dakota really has no large urban centres.  As for Western Ontario, it all depends how many of those people travel further East, or have contact with people who do.

It will also depend on social gatherings where precautions have not been taken, and the US has a lot of gospel meetings where masks are discouraged, so that is also a flashpoint.

Yes but stats

MB 7 deaths 1.36m

ND 52 deaths 0.76m

Lower in the states means mid level Canada.

I'll be honest, I don't want the Canada/US border open, North Dakota isn't terrible but the USA as a whole is a mess right now. Thanks for providing the stats @FrostyWinnipeg.

Totally agree.

I mean I'm happy that we're opening up a little in Manitoba because I'd like to be able to go to the library, sit in a coffee shop or restaurant, see friends etc. Hopefully a church service soon but stuff like that is just Wow, not what I want to be doing.

IIRC, there was a strong candidate running for the Dems, but the usual result happened.

It’s similar, in a fashion, to religious beliefs. 
Belief in your invincibility is only that..a belief. 
The strength you achieve through this belief, still must be tempered with knowledge and experience, whether your own, or trusted ones.

Have faith, but be reasonable, and smart.
Do not take it for granted.
