Canadian Politics

I didn't think we had a thread for this.

Is Trudeau this out of touch or does he just not care?

I cannot see there being more than 2-3 seat gain for the NDP in the rural...they are absolutely reviled outside the perimeter.

Interlake, Gimli, Selkirk, Brandon - any of those will be in play for the NDP. The have a long history of being swing ridings.  And of course, the North is a given.  Especially Selkirk and Gimli.  They are former NDP strongholds.

Interlake is not in play. Take that to the bank. Johnson is very well liked and when the constituency was redrawn a few years ago it took the reserves out and placed a bunch of the former Lakeside (Harry Enns country) into it.  Gimli too was redrawn and includes heavy swaths of Interlake mennonite country now. Unlikely to move. Selkirk could swing, maybe one of the Brandon ridings, and possibly Swan River. These are the only possible rural gains to be had for NDP. The North....yea...that's a given. Ashton was hated in Thompson and that opened the door briefly for Bindle...but he did nothing with his opportunity and the USW will make sure it stays orange.

There were plenty of NDP votes coming out of Gimli, Winnipeg Beach et. al. when Peter Bjornson had the Gimli riding

I used to live in that riding but I'm in Selkirk after the redraw

Bjornson used to win by several thousand votes (his last election might have been around 1000), he never lost until he retired from politics

Federal security oversight of Parliament Hill should expand to include Wellington and Sparks streets, according to Liberal MPs who sit on a House of Commons committee studying parliamentary security after last winter's convoy protest.

The Liberals say a land transfer should take place between the City of Ottawa and the federal department in charge of public services, which would allow the street in front of the hill — Wellington — and the pedestrian street one block south of it — Sparks — to become part of the parliamentary precinct.

Conservatives disagree with the recommendations and say politicians should not be in charge of security.

That's a change of tone from 2015 — after the shooting on Parliament Hill — when the Conservative government led by then-prime minister Stephen Harper pushed through changes to hand over control of Parliament Hill security to the RCMP.

Yep but both Gimli and Interlake were redrawn with large pockets of NDP support moving with them.

First time I heard this.

Elections Manitoba said next year’s election, to be held on or before Oct. 3, will be the first provincial election to use electronic voting machines similar to the ones used for several years by the City of Winnipeg during municipal elections.

Winnipeg Beach and Gimli are still in the Gimli-Interlake riding - those are substantial population centres.

Bjornson was immensely popular in Gimli/Beach areas, well known in community politics and as a school teacher before that. Gimli, especially, is usually strongly PC and the NDP would place well south of Gimli. Now the majority of the constituency is Gimli and rural North and that is heavy mennonite country all through there. Gimli will be a good race. Interlake...there is zero chance of an NDP win. The Liberals finished ahead of the NDP there....and not by a small margin either.

Interlake - Gimli is the same riding now.  The old Gimli riding had a long history of swinging back and forth, it was not just Bjornson's popularity. We will see what happens

Your generation will **** up. Previous generations always do. The generations that come after you will insult your generation's short sightedness & general lack of intelligence compared to them. You'll be old dinosaurs whose opinion means nothing. Too bad I won't be around to see it.

Yeah no thanks on the bolded and as for the last comment, who cares what they are, I care who they are.  The colour of your skin doesn't make you more or less suited for a position.

Why? A diverse background for a government isn't a bad thing. Can't all be lawyers, that's not going to represent the public well.

So you think Community Wellness Minister Sarah Guillemard, with no higher education or relevant work experience (if any) is doing so great because of "who she is"?

As for your "no thanks on the bolded", you actually have a problem with someone with a Masters in Public Administration being a member of government?

The thing is, we don't know how people will think in 30 or 50 years. Society may take a hard turn to the right or left. Then the  reaction may be how could YOUR generation have gone that far or not far enough on social issues. As well as how governmant is expected to act. Whatever it is, the generational sentiment will likely change.

In the same breath throwing out tribalism as a criticism.

OTTAWA – Today, NDP Transport Critic Taylor Bachrach (Skeena—Bulkley Valley) and Tax Fairness and Inequality Critic Niki Ashton (Churchill—Keewatinook Aski) called out the Liberals for pushing forward their plan to privatize the passenger rail service between Toronto and Quebec City which will make life more expensive for Canadian commuters. The Liberals appointed former SNC Lavalin Lawyer, Robert Prichard, to an arm's length subsidiary of Via Rail whose job will be to prioritize the interests of wealthy CEOs involved in building the passenger line between Quebec City and Toronto.

“Canada is fortunate to have VIA Rail, a Crown Corporation with a proven track record that Canadians depend on to travel across the country,” said Bachrach. “Instead of building on this proud legacy, the Liberals seem intent on handing over VIA’s busiest corridor and the bulk of its passenger revenue to private interests —putting profits ahead of the interests of passengers. This is wrong. The Liberals are making decisions on transit based on the interests of the rich and powerful, not everyday Canadians. People deserve better.”

^^ Liberals governing like Conservatives...par for the course

Also consider that Angus Reid's reputation has taken quite a hit over the past several years. It's not on the dubious level of PROBE polls but their methodology has come under fire in recent years.
