Rep. George Santos, the freshman Republican congressman whose myriad falsehoods became both a scandal and a national punchline, was charged with a host of financial crimes in court papers unsealed Wednesday.

Santos, 34, surrendered to federal authorities in the morning and is expected to appear in a federal courthouse in Central Islip, on Long Island, later Wednesday.  Officials said he has been charged with fraud, money laundering, theft of public funds, and false statements. The congressman and his lawyer did not respond to earlier messages seeking comment.

Santos, federal authorities said, lied to his own donors, the House of Representatives, state unemployment officials, and others, resulting in seven counts of wire fraud, three counts of money laundering, one count of theft of public funds, and two counts of lying to the House of Representatives on financial forms.

Santos has been the subject of multiple investigations. Prosecutors and federal agents have been scrutinizing his campaign finance reports and a host of related questions about his personal income and spending. Of particular interest to authorities is how Santos’s income seemed to fluctuate significantly, as well as a loan he made to his campaign of more than $700,000, according to people familiar with the matter, who spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss it.

The congressman also came under fire for allegedly pocketing $3,000 from a GoFundMe page he purportedly set up for a homeless veteran to help pay for surgery for the man’s dying service dog. Meanwhile, the Securities and Exchange Commission has interviewed people about Santos’s role in Harbor City Capital, an investment firm that was forced to shut down in 2021 after the SEC accused it of operating a “classic Ponzi scheme.”

And as soon as he was arrested, he spontaneously recalled being "inappropriately touched" by a congressman.

Oh my goodness, he was lying? That's really shocking. He seemed so honest and he's a Republican. They're such a trusting political party that they didn't do any research into his background. Welp!

So how F##ked up does your country have to be to elect people like him and MTG.

The only people who knew were the ones in the GOP. The voters didn't know who Santos L Halper was. Is it that shocking the GOP would lie to voters?

Carl Sagan 1996

“I have a foreboding of an America in my children's or grandchildren's time -- when the United States is a service and information economy; when nearly all the manufacturing industries have slipped away to other countries; when awesome technological powers are in the hands of a very few, and no one representing the public interest can even grasp the issues; when the people have lost the ability to set their own agendas or knowledgeably question those in authority; when, clutching our crystals and nervously consulting our horoscopes, our critical faculties in decline, unable to distinguish between what feels good and what's true, we slide, almost without noticing, back into superstition and darkness...

The dumbing down of American is most evident in the slow decay of substantive content in the enormously influential media, the 30 second sound bites (now down to 10 seconds or less), lowest common denominator programming, credulous presentations on pseudoscience and superstition, but especially a kind of celebration of ignorance”

The celebration of ignorance, has reached a peak, with Trump, and some of our Canadian Trumps, National and Provincial. who knows, might get worse.

It is frightening.

I'd wager that Republicans voters would not give a ****.  If Santos was still on the ballot, they'd still vote for him regardless of what was discovered pre-election.

53.8% for Santos
46.2% for Zimmerman

That is a big gap- you might be right. Although... the amount of stuff that came out might have been enough for 4% of the republicans to ... nah, you're probably right.

To be honest, the Dems probably knew all about Santos but decided to let the GOP cover themselves with excrement by defending Santos as more and more bad stuff kept rolling out. Santos probably caused a lot of undecided voters to gravitate towards the Democrats.

You give the Democrats far too much credit... I mean, you are right- this santos thing is a total boon for the Democrats, I feel it's the same story over and over, the Rs are just soooooo bad, that the Ds just passively benefit from the shitshow.

They knew nothing. Remember, Congress was up for grabs and both sides were doing anything they could to secure a majority. If the Dems knew Santos was not who he claimed to be, they would have gone after him. They failed. Santos was billed as a gay, moderate Republican that moderates could vote for. It was all a lie.

They did though, unfortunately after he was elected.

The North Shore Leader in Long Island exposed him before the election.  No one listened because I guess you can't trust the media?

The gay part is true.

CNN wants ratings so bad that they think putting Trump on TV after he called them trash year after year so that he could replay his greatest hits shows you how desperate things are at CNN.

You have to wonder if the 24 hour news cycle, largely created by CNN, will ever get back journalistic standards of years past? The media always chases ad revenue to survive but they've undercut their own product so much, there is just so little left.

And, the advertisers are mainstream companies on CNN. The biggies. They don't seem to mind their products being associated with tabloid journalism.
