US Politics

Lets see if we can keep this thread a little more civil.

I found this interview very interesting.  A lot of soft balls thrown at Trump, he explained his back pedalling on his more extreme issues as a lot of his claims as opening bids for negotiation purposes.  Which .. whatever .. I still think that those are insincere claims he used to get elected.

He does now come across way more presidential then he did prior to the election.  A lot of his noise, yelling, and rhetoric has been scaled back.

Do respect this one though:

Quote

Lesley Stahl: Are you gonna take the salary, the president’s salary?

Donald Trump: Well, I’ve never commented on this, but the answer is no. I think I have to by law take $1, so I’ll take $1 a year. But it’s a -- I don’t even know what it is.

Donald Trump: Do you know what the salary is?

Lesley Stahl: $400,000 you’re giving up.

Donald Trump: No, I’m not gonna take the salary. I’m not taking it.

You came here to do your usual thing where you distract and downplay out of some weird sense of emotional fealty to Trump.

or I came to point out a fact about the Canadian and US voting patterns.  Another option.

You ask Republicans and they would certainly say that.

LOL yeah, and that's not really a fair assessment, especially when you look back at some of the awful presidents that have existed in American history.

Hey let’s talk about Obama. Nothing else to talk about. Oh wait

That would sure sting if you have an emotional connection to trump.

I guess so.

President is a transparent blowhard and a disgrace.

Sessions resigned at Trump's request.

Mueller will be acting now, I guess.

And, Rosenthal is no longer overseeing the Mueller investigation, by the sounds of things.

Something just hit the fan.

Wait What? Rosenstien is not in charge of the Investigation anymore?

Correct. Rosenstein only oversaw it because Sessions recused himself. Whitaker will not be doing that.

Wow.

Here. We. Go.

It was well known Trump was just waiting for mid-terms to be over to "fire" Sessions.

The plan is likely to either fire or hamstring Mueller.  It will be interesting if Whitaker also recuses himself.  As Sessions Chief of Staff, I'd think he'd want to but Trump was steamed over the recusal and wants an AG he can control.

The only reason Rod Rosenstein handles the Mueller case is because Sessions recused himself.  If the new AG has no conflict, he'd be in charge.

Will also be interesting to see if Rod is fired or resigns.  And what fail safes Mueller has in place in the event of his dismissal.

Knowing the House is gunning for him Trump may simply look to his new AG to "control" Mueller and demand it wrap up.  On the other hand, he might figure if the Dems are coming for him, to fire Meuller now.  Dems dont take over til January.

Mueller kept quiet during the election out of loyalty to DOJ policy.  So we can assume there were plenty of things going on behind closed doors.  There are rumors Don Jr has either been indicted or will soon be.

Trump could order Whitaker to fire Meuller right now.  That would set up a constitutional crises.  But the Dems cant act until January.  So I wonder...would Trump order the DOJ to fire Mueller now and go about destroying his files to make it difficult for the House in January?

Hopefully Mueller has sealed indictments for everyone warranted.  Referring whatever he can to the Southern District would help to since its out of Trump's reach,.

What a crazy situation. I almost can't believe it's happening. But, you know, Murica.

Trump is such a piece of garbage, for so many reasons. And those that support him, well...

You and I are of the same mind.  I accept that people disagree but I find it very difficult to understand why someone would support an obvious idiot who is also criminal, racist, misogynistic, a serial harasser etc.  If none of those are a red line, then nothing is.  And that speaks to the character of those people more than anything.

If being conservative means I have to accept & support Trump then that means I never vote again. There are a lot of good men & women in the United States who are principled conservatives & would never act the way he does. Hence, I'd be Independent.  I personally don't think Trump will run in 2020. I hope he's on his way out.

It's ridiculous. Conservatism is dead in the US (right now). You either vote with the racist papaya or vote against him, likely a non-conservative.

Good for the Dems but too bad about the Senate they won't really have any power to do anything but fire up Trumps base if they are not careful. Old Mitch is already laying the ground work for that angle.

When, back in the day..... "Compassionate Conservatism" didn't get any traction......the Republicans over time, have just completely gone in the other direction...... with this current bigoted, xenophobic, dog whistling, nationalism.   Trump attracts alt-right types like flies - and the people in the GOP, who should know better.....have turned themselves into simply lapdogs, spear carriers, and lackeys for someone (Trump) who is indifferent to them, when not actually holding them in contempt.

This new acting AG has to recuse himself based on statements he has said in the past, of course that wont happen why else would Trump put him in that position, Mueller investigation may never see the light of day.

If they have to....the Dems can have Mueller testify, in public, under oath.... before a House Committee, with the results of his probe......
