I have to say I am surprised at how many have turned on Brady and are prepared to shrug and just let him walk, especially thinking that it locks in Schoen now. I totally get the concept that running backs have a shorter shelf life than receivers (and agree with that) and that they can be a dime a dozen and his production can be easily replaced more than other positions (not as sure that is agree given the heights he achieved, or that it is any tougher to unearth a receiver, but I am willing to concede that point rather than argue about a hypothetical hair splitting matter). However, a few things to ponder if comparing Oliveira/Schoen and assuming we must let one go and it will guarantee us the other:

    MONEY

Brady made $100,000 last year, max $114,000 with bonuses (this according to 3DownNation, and I’d have to think he hit all of his plausible bonus plateaus), and is seeking to be the highest paid back (and re-set the market, though that may be fans and media talking more than his one playful tweet which I personally think some are taking way too seriously to get offended by, jmo). Highest paid back last year was $170,000, Demski made $175,000 (as a Canadian comparable), so even re-setting the market I can’t fathom it being higher than $200,000. I would peg it at between $175,000-$190,000 at the top end.

Dalton made $70,000 or so last year (Wpg Sun, who said he made near rookie minimum). If he is #1 or 2 in the CFL, then the bar for him is $300,000 given the current market set by Kenny Lawler. I would peg him at $225,000-250,000 on the open market. So in theory, those worrying about overpaying and costing us elsewhere on the roster should be more concerned about the larger pay increase being Schoen, no?

    LIFESPAN

Brady is 26, Dalton is 27, so neither is getting old, and since a max contract is 3 years and is a rarity in the CFL, the shorter shelf life of a running back should not really come into play.

    DURABILITY

Brady plays a pounding game, so always a threat of injury, but Dalton is coming off an injury himself, and who knows how healed up he is, in light of his rush back into the Grey Cup lineup and the non-factor that he was in that game. He sure got beaten up last season, curious to see how he rebounds.

    IMPORTANCE

This is where I am curious about opinions. Both are key to our attack, but it was said that the offence ran through Brady (no pun intended). If Dalton goes down, we still have Lawler, Demski, Wolitarsky, Bailey, and BOLO for our corps, plus whatever young American we bring in this season. If Brady is out, we have Augustine, McCrae or a new American. In which position do you see more of a drop off? And only one of Brady and Dalton is a ratio-breaking Canadian.

    LOYALTY

i again wonder how much of the Brady dismissal is due to the tweet and nothing else. I did not read it as a middle finger to Winnipeg or the fans, just a playful response to the media tweet of “the sky’s the limit” rather than a threat to bleed teams dry. But that’s just me. In any event, Dalton has not necessarily shown any greater loyalty by wanting to try the NFL route in consecutive seasons, if one wants to get their nose out of joint (I do not, players words or expressed desires of maximizing their careers does not irk me). I don’t see either as being more or less loyal to the club.

I always remembered Dave Ritchie saying “Canadians are gold, Americans are silver” so I am surprised so many seem willing to just say bye-bye to the MOC who did something no other back period has done since Jon Cornish and only Charles Roberts has done before in a Winnipeg jersey (2,000 scrimmage yards). Dalton put up league-leading or comparable numbers, but Brady lapped the field with his performance last year. I feel that people are underselling his accomplishments, or the importance of his play at the position (and more so the position itself in the Bomber offence), a little too readily.

Anyway? Just some musings. Sorry about the length, hoping it might generate more discussion.

Thank you for your thoughts. I agree with many of your comments that you have made.

I believe many true Blue Bomber supporter truly don't want to see Brady/Dalton walk away from our team, I sure don't want to see that. The fans of the team understand when it comes to money matters and what's best for the team, the team does come first. For Brady/Dalton they both know that of the fans/team (both have looked up in the stands and seen the support for them & the team), but they need to look out for themselves right now, the team comes in second, until they sign.

Of course, the unknown waiting game has the true Blue Bomber supporters edgy, testy among themselves (I'm seeing it here). The process of entertaining so called NFL interest or thoughts of future outside opportunities, have many of the supporters showing frustrations during this timeframe (count me in that group). It seems to be a much slower key signing process this year than past couple years.

I have said this of the Blue Bomber Organization in the past, they will get it done, one way or another this year as well and I will support the Bombers up in the stands.

I don't think that i made anything sound amazing. I'm just stating that its not impossible that they got something of value in an otherwise valueless slot. Much of the league doesn't value the Global draft. But the bombers are a bit different in that regard.  We have two players so far that have actually helped the team. The regular draft would go a lot faster as well if they didn't delay the announcement of picks for television and there was no opportunity to field trade offers. In theory a team that has done their due diligence should always know who they are going to select when their slot comes up.

For the record, i view the two punters we drafted as longshots to make the team if they do in fact show up. I just think there may be a scenario where we would look at using a different punter than Legghio. If the team decides that it may improve his placekicking with less responsibility. In that case the american punters we signed would have to justify the use of a DI on a punter when we could use a global or a national.

Agree with you Colin... I get excited about the CFL & stuff that leads up to the draft, free agency and times when we are in the off-season. The CFL in general, I truly enjoy.

Now what you have mentioned above is so accurate and I really like your response. Will these prospects make the team, who knows, but there have been prospects throughout that were found in the past that were unknowns or weren't given a snow balls chance in making a team.

There should be excitement given the success the Bombers have had with the drafting, recruiting over the past few years and taking into consideration the position that the Bombers have been selecting.

    😂 touch grass

There’s nothing wrong with saying this is a poor draft class. So many factors and circumstances, not the least of which is that the Canadian talent is getting better and better so the NFL is taking the best.

We’re largely being left this year with undersized players, average-ish NCAA talent that turned out to be Canadian on a technicality and project players. Not to say that nothing can be made of this class of picks, but it lacks the top end talent we’ve seen in past drafts.

    Enjoy draft night...

You love to make every move the Bombers make sound amazing, don’t you? Lol

This is legitimately a nothing transaction. I would be shocked if this guy even came to camp. This draft has basically become a giant waste of time, you can tell how seriously teams take it given that it took less than 20 minutes from start to finish for 18 picks. There was one guy in this talent pool who has a legitimate chance and legitimate interest in the CFL and he went first overall.

Wow!!! Why do you watch, then? Still waiting for your Mock Draft.

Dunk's draft picks are the only ones that have proved truly reliable, in the past.

Sure, but you probably are looking at his mock draft that was provided on May 1, 2022... Draft day was May 3, 2022... That to me, is like getting an answer sheet on your test paper that you are writing in two days...

If you call that predictions thats great, no problem, but these other guys are providing mock drafts much earlier and then doing revised ones closer to draft day as well....

If available, I could see us taking an OL that has NFL interest in the 2nd or 3rd round. I remember reading that there are a couple out there. It's worked out well for us in the past.

Although, I have also read that our OL is terrible, so maybe we need to replace everyone now!?

Oh, those "Monday Morning Quarterbacks" they are in the know!!!

I think we go BDPA (best defensive player available) in round one and likely rounds one and two. If we take an OL its a later round, more developmental, send back to school player.

Agree with your comment and this years draft .... as far as OL, the kid out of Brandon who's going to U of SK fits that bill,,,,,

Further the Bombers have brought back Brandon Sanford (UBC, who was at camp last year, sent back to school) and signed Tyler Grisolla from U of Toronto just lately, who I would think one of them may be the development player after camp breaks....

What's the point of doing a detailed mock draft when those details are wrong?  I'm not convinced that he actually watches games other than the ones he works.  Last year Ferguson said that the Riders weren't desperate for help on the o-line - anyone with a pair of eyes could see that was way off.

Hodge isn't much better... he had us taking an OL early because it filled a "need" for us.  Not sure where he saw the need but the team obviously didn't feel the same way since they took a grand total of zero OL last year.

I do enjoy reading the mock drafts but they hold next to no value.

Agree with your last sentence/comment, but do enjoy reading the mocks and getting a prospective of the upcoming players by these guys... Where they go and to who, not that important to me.. its a mock draft, not reality!!!

I swear Marshall Ferguson is the most useless CFL analyst out there. Nothing he says ever makes any sense and it reeks of a guy who has the connections to get places but no ability to do anything with what he’s seeing. Cole Tucker and Jake Maier working underneath to imitate Collaros and Schoen? Schoen led the entire league in yards per catch because he was blowing the top off the D, not working underneath in the soft spots. Michael Brodrique to Montreal, he’s French! BC traded a number 1 overall pick LB for a 9th overall pick to draft … a LB! David Dallaire to be FB4 for Montreal in the second round, he’s French!

Well, Mike please provide your 3 round detailed mock draft...

As mentioned last week, when another decided to rip someone,  its a chat forum with all supposely providing their thoughts, suggestions, etc... I for one, look forward to John Hodge's and Marshall Ferguson's mock drafts...

Nevis has played one football game since the 2019 Grey Cup.

I get that people know his name but it boggles the mind that anyone thinks he could shore up a DL spot at this point in his career.

If you bring him in you're hoping he can contribute in a small way.  You're not counting on him even playing half a season, it would be a depth move.

Wonder if there has been any interest or conversation with Mike Moore, who was released by Mtl a few days ago?

Well said. It really shows how spoiled we’ve become when we complain about Grey Cup performances; like getting there three years in a row and winning two isn’t a major accomplishment.. Like we didn’t have a 30 year drought and a lot of bad to mediocre seasons in between that time period.. heck 10 years ago I just wanted the Bombers to not be the laughing stock or the league. How quick we forget!

Well said. There are those that will always put their comments with a negative twist, no matter if things are going very well!!!

yeah just saw the Dunbar thing...that was the guy I hoped we would lock up if we lost out on Lawler, and or Lewis if we interested....I can actually see Lewis coming here for fair and market value but not 300k+ value to be on a legit "team" and have opp to do things in the community which he seems to want to be part of...knowing he has a legit chance at nice playoff bonus cash

yep, looking at all these free agent receivers a while back, Dunbar was up there... do like White Jr. as well

I'm reading all these posts and thinking back to last year and the conversations... No more than 225 for Lawler, I believe I read... And so it was, 300,000 so dollars, Lawler left for greenier pastures to Edmonton.. Now this year.. Lawler is exploring for top dollar again and I do understand negotiations. Both sides will be doing the back and forth, crap.... but here in Wpg, there is a salary structure that is followed and used....

So, first and most important, we have #10 back and signed for 3 years. Happy, happy here!! It appears #83 probably will be back and that was something to watch last year... Yep, I said wow, many times!!! Nice find there scouting staff, as well... Now in saying that, #83 I think will get a bump in his compensation, which is first thing ahead of any incoming receiver, even if its Lawler... Don't get me wrong, I like Lawler as a Bomber, want him back, but at 1 million over 3, I don't think so...

Again, over the last few weeks, we talked about our listed roster receivers playing a more important role, plus other potential receivers coming here to Wpg... the likes of Wieneke (Als) from MN, Steven Sunbar Jr (Cats) and Reggie White Jr (Als), who could provide the necessary level of play for out team and very much affordable. That number of 225 still sounds better than 333000/year, when you have #10, #83, #82 locked up and the likes of #84, #14 ready to go and #88 wanting to sign.

Sadly, I must say, for that last receiver, the talent is available elsewhere! This is a great organization, players do want to come here.

So, after I wrote this,,,, two (2) receivers are of the board.... down to one (1) and Lawler,,, who will it be or a prospect by our scouting department?

For me (not that my opinion matters) 250K for a receiver is as high as I'd like to go... and only for a certain few players... Lawler being one of them... I'll be happy if we can get him for 3 years, 750K.... but I trust Walters to do what's best for the team

In this scenario... and if Schoen can replicate his 2022 numbers... then we're probably looking at 500+ for two receivers...

Agree with... but that 250 number is high, just saying... but last year you had Jones and BC throwing crazy money and this year its Sask... But, they have to try and please their fan base, I get that...

BC turned it around because of Rourke more than the receivers (time will tell this year), Edm showed some improvement with their host of signing throughout the season. This year so far, the crazy/nutty show is happening in Sask but because they have a healthy fan base, they have money to throw away...
