  1. I actually don't mind seeing some blowouts in the CFL as long as it's not a regular occurrence - like 2 out of 4 games week after week. Separates the wheat from the chaff. Plus we get to see a well-executed game from one team - few turnovers and great execution.
  2. Never ever have believed in houseclearing. That guarantees you will not make the playoffs the next season. You bring guys in and may the best talent win - except for the Canadian ratio thing where you don't have to be better. Worked in Hamilton. Cleaned house in 2012 with a 6-12 team including a first year coach and brought in Austin plus several others and the team went 10-8 and made it to the Grey Cup. Went to the Grey Cup last year too. Honestly, some people have these preconceived ideas of how they think things will work out without providing any evidence to back up these preconceptions. I'm not saying the Bombers are due for a housecleaning just yet. Let's see how the season plays out first. No excuses for the team to not win at least one of their next three. I think they have a shot at winning two of the next three personally. It worked? Really? 2nd place is the first loser. Just like Hamilton in 2013 and 2014, we lost Grey Cups in 1992, 1993, 2001, 2007 and 2011. We don't celebrate those years. Sarcasm? I'll chalk it up to that. FrostyWinnipeg falsely assumes that a housecleaning will automatically mean no playoffs the following season. I rather easily dismissed his claim with my Hamilton example who by the way are smoking the Lions as we speak and will lead the East Division within a few short hours. Try and follow along more carefully next time. Maybe you missed your afternoon nap and aren't quite with it today?
  3. So you would have rather us had Crowton stay on as OC? At least with MB we got a mediocre OC instead of a shitty one. If you can bring in someone better then MB as a consultant, it can't hurt. And you don't have to keep him. Montreal brought in Garcia as a consultant and he didn't stay. That seems to be the problem with the organization. They seem satisfied with mediocrity like it's some kind of major accomplishment. Hey MB might be one of the worst, or possibly the worst OC in the league, but at least he's better than Crowton!

  5. marve was decent, not good or great. Pretty suspect on anything intermediate or long. Maybe he improves on that, maybe he doesn't. Some Qbs just never develop the ability to throw accurately on anything outside of short passes. Bombers never advanced past the 42 yard line of the Argos in the 2nd half and the Argos defense seemed to have Marve figured out, especially on that last Bomber offensive play. Even Irving mentioned this. Marve never appeared to look past his first read though tough to tell when you are not at the game. VERY conservative play-calling as well. Could not believe the number of short passes - is that on Marcel or on Marve who would not look past his first read? Defense stepped up once again but special teams and the fumble on the following drive killed us. Marve didn't win the game but he certainly didn't lose it for the Bombers. I think the Argos are a good, but not great team. Horseshoes up the butt to win the games the way they have the past several weeks. The Eskies and the Ticats are better and Calgary might be better if they weren't missing so many key players from last year.
  6. Beeston is probably retiring after this season.
  7. Top payroll teams have an advantage but the team's that have been to the World Series recently middling or lower payrolls.in MLB ie. Texas, San Francisco, St Louis, Kansas City
  8. Hamilton hasn't developed a Qb in 30 years. All they did was sign Collaros from Toronto. They are one of the Grey Cup favorites. Bombers won a Grey Cup with Saskatchewan's castoff Tom Burgess in 1990. It can be done, but the team will need to improve its Canadian content and do a significantly better job of recruiting from the US. It remains to be seen if Walter is up to the task.
  9. Our media!? What a crock. I would love to see that substantiated. Only on a Bomber forum, where a subsection of posters seemingly loves to place blame for the Bombers ills at the feet of our media, would someone use that as the very reason for our inability to hire a good coach.
  10. Since the crossover came into effect way back when, there has never been a team with an 8-10 record that has not made the playoffs. In an 8 team league, there can only be a total of 72 wins; in a 9 team league 81 wins. With 6 of 8 or 6 of 9 teams making the playoffs, it would require extremely unusual circumstances for an 8 win team to NOT make the playoffs (again, with the crossover). If the Bombers win 8, they should qualify, whether that is as a crossover team in the east, or the third place team in the west.
  11. The Bombers had 273 yards of NET OFFENSE. Again, it was against a defense that had a 31 point lead at the half. Only natural to take the foot off the gas and yet the Bombers's offense still managed to stall out and punt 12 times. Pathetic. Moving the ball means sweet f-all unless you convert some of those drives into points, whether with field goals or TDs. What I see is a team up to this point in the season is a team that is at the bottom-half of the league in most offensive categories...AGAIN. It's only going to get worse with Willy out. Hope the defense is up to the challenge next week.
  12. 273 total yards on offense and a grand total of 8 points against a defense that had little to play for after the first half - it's only natural for the defense to let up a little bit with such a huge lead. Yet, the Bombers could only score 8 points...and they punted the ball 12 times....and I see a comment from Goalie that the offense had some "nice drives." Laughable. With MB in charge I think it's pretty apparent that the Bombers will have, at best, an average offense. At worst, with Willy out, an offense that probably sinks to the bottom of the league.
  13. AA will be fine if the Jays make the playoffs. He doesn't have to win the world series or even make it to the series for that matter. The farm is not completely bare either. They still have some very good prospects including a top-50 one in Dalton Pompey. When AA traded several top prospects in 2012 to the Marlins and the Mets, the Jays prospect pool dropped from top-5 in the league to bottom-10. Within two years, he had the prospect pool back in the top-10 in MLB. The one thing AA is consistent at is good drafting. If Dombrowski ends up with the Jays it will most likely be as President with AA remaining in charge as GM.
  14. That seems strange. Why is she against WIFI? If she supports homeopathy in conjunction with traditional medicine no harm in that.
  15. I was too young to remember Brock playing for the Bombers. I do recall first hearing that he played for the Bombers during the 1984 Grey Cup when Winnipeg smoked the Ticats. I was at what was supposed to be one of the final games or the final regular season game at Canad Inns back in 2011 when they brought out past Bomber greats and introduced them one by one. When the camera panned to Brock and his name was announced, he received one of the loudest cheers (Milt received the most of course and I can't remember if Walby was there and received more cheers as well). He had a big smile on his face soaking in the cheers. Keep in mind this was the first time he was recognized at Winnipeg Stadium since his playing days - over 25 years ago. It appeared that time heals all wounds.
  16. As a youngster, I remember going with my dad to a game in October 1985 against the Lions. Sold out stadium with 32,000 in the stands. Bombers one a close game by a TD. At that time Swervin Feryn Fernandez was the best receiver in the CFL, and would have probably been the best receiver in CFL history had he spent his entire career in Canada. You could always count on at least one deep ball completion to Fernandez each game and this one was no different as Dewalt hooked up with him in the third or fourth quarter. I seem to remember a play late in the game where the Bombers were pinned deep in their zone on third down, and Cameron, uncharacteristically, hit a poor punt to give the Lions good field position inside the Bomber 50. On that drive, and possibly another, I think the Bombers defense held strong limiting the Lions a field goal or no points ultimately winning the game. Great game, great atmosphere and some great memories.
  17. Didn't want to start another thread on this so I will just put the weekend ratings here. https://ca.sports.yahoo.com/blogs/eh-game/the-great-canadian-ratings-report--blue-jays-trades-paying-off-already-on-television-202806158.html#more-id 1. MLS, Toronto FC at New England, Saturday, Sportsnet 360: 74,000 I'm thinking that CFL ratings are down compared to summer games in the 2013 and 2014 seasons. Blue Jays are killing it right now coming off the Tulowitzki and Price trades. The top 4 ratings for this past weekend are Jays games.
  18. Phew. Glad Willy isn't seriously injured. If Brohm starts and struggles like he did in his last 2 relief appearances, I expect the booing to rival that of Alex Brink's inaugural start back in 2010.
  19. The hiring policies of this organization, over the past few decades can be viewed with a rightful degree of skepticism. 1996 - Winnipeg Blue Bombers board decides to relieve curmudgeon Coach and GM, Cal Murphy in favour of the sexy, hip young coach on the harley resulting in two of the worst seasons in Bomber history. 1999 - boards hired Lyle Bauer as GM and CEO. While Bauer does some good things like bringing the Bombers debt levels to manageable levels and increase season ticket levels and corporate sponsorships to a respecatable amount, he inserted himself into the decision-making process of recently promoted GM Brendan Taman in 2004 ordering him to fire Dave Ritchie. He followed this up in 2008, ordering the firing of Doug Berry in favor of his buddy Mike Kelly, leading to the disastrous 2009 season in which Kelly traded away half the Bombers' upcoming draft picks and alienated the fan base resulting in the lowest crowds seen since the late 90s. Oh, and the team missed the playoffs as well followed by Kelly's arrest and ultimate firing. Bauer leaves for the greener pastures of Calgary around this time. 2010 - In its infinite wisdom, the Bomber board decides to hire a former director of player personal, Joe Mack, who hasn't been seen in these parts, or any other CFL city in 22 years. A curious hire, Mack fails to deliver on his promise of delivering the franchise a long-term solution at QB relying on broken-down Buck Pierce to lead the team during his entire 4-year tenure. Canadian drafting leads to mixed results, recruiting from the US is adequate, but free agency proves to be his greatest downfall as he fails to significantly upgrade areas of significant weakness, O-line and QB. Needless to say he proves to be a terrible team builder leading the team to 4-14, 10-8, 6-12 and 3-15 team seasons. His hirings for the head coach position are highly questionable, most notably the disasterous 1.5 year reign of Tim Burke. 2012- The hiring of Garth Buchko as CEO who lasted all of a year and will forever be known as the man who guaranteed the Bombers would be playing at Investors Group Field in 2012. Another curious hiring of an individual who appears to have been unqualified for the job. It appears that being the director of a radio station that broadcast Bomber games was good enough for the suits on top. 2013 - Bombers bring in failed special teams coach, Kyle Walters, acting as interim general manager in the wake of the Joe Mack firing, with assurances from up top that the Bombers will extensively search for a GM come the off-season. Sure enough, in the off season, after this "extensive search" Kyle Walter is hired. His near 2-year reign as GM has been a mixed bag - high-priced free agent acquisitions Nick Moore and Korey Banks failed to impress(first year) or were MIA while Stanley Bryant has seen middling results. Trades for the likes of Chris Randle and Dominic Picard have improved the Bombers at those respective positions on the field. While Walters should be commended for doing what his predecessor failed to do, sign a young up-and-coming QB in Drew Willy, there was really no other options for both the GM and the QB for the starter's spot. All other teams had their Qb positions filled with Burris and Collaros having rebuked the young GM in favour of teams elsewhere. The big concern with this GM is his inability to recruit replacement players from colleges and the NFL down south, most noticeably at linebacker and the defensive line. Will add something about Miller tomorrow....
  20. Positive from this poster is that I missed the game for the Fringe Festival. I won't bother watching this nightmare on replay.
  21. The Offense had 5 two and outs and 2 more three and outs. That's "not barely" as you would put it. The offense generated little after the first 10 minutes of the game. Cotton didn't touch the ball much in the second half due to poor gains on his three or four touches. In fact, Cotton had two gains over 5 yards. Tough to generate a running game with that kind of production. Bombers had 27 passes and 17 rushes. That's the typical ratio for a CFL game.
  22. We haven't had a great GM since Cal. Early results with Walters suggests he is average...but it's early. Recruiting from down south has left something to be desired.
  23. I expect a Bomber victory next week. Esks arguably have the worst O-Line in the league and the worst starting QB in the west. No reason our D can't limit them to < 20 points. That's a positive.
  24. Our field goal kicker is fine inside the 45. It's the point after converts where he is shaky.
  25. Losing a game, albeit close but still losing, is exorcising a demon? Hmmmmm, ok.
