Putting aside Durant’s ‘09 season, and Matt Nichols career in Winnipeg, I’ll just ask you how are the injuries to the Bomber playmakers in 2002 and 2003 the fault of the OC?
i dunno......look at the injuries Buck has dealt with here...starting center...knicked up tackles.....ellingson out....demski missing games....woli out....as well as integrating a new RB....and we humming along just fine...so a good OC it appears gets the most, and production out of his players available....I guess an average one doesnt??
10 minutes ago, TrueBlue4ever said:that cup wasnt a result of Lapo's offence....funny that Buck is that picture too, as he had a huge hand in things as well...and his offence now is night and day more explosive and prolific....if you wanna say the success was a result of the OC...Then Buck has slayed Lapo as he is 25-5 as the OC

Does Khari’s best season ever under him count? Or Darian Durant’s development into a starter? Buck Pierce when healthy had possibly his best season ever under LaPo. Matt Nichols had his best success under LaPolice’s offence. As for Streveler, I would argue in part his “regression” as a thrower was in part due to teams getting tape on him and figuring out how to defend him (don’t let him run and force him to beat you with his arm). He had the same offence that Nichols and Collaros had but with poorer results, more INTs, and a losing record. LaPo was able to tweak his game around his option play running scheme, and it garnered him an NFL look. Where he continues to struggle as a pure passer in his first few years (see Bomber Esiason’s scathing commentary in game after a bad Streveler pick).
I get the perception since other than Durant he has not taken a raw rookie and made him a solid starter. And he isn’t the QB guru like the Stamps coaches. But words like “no one” and “terrible” is the kind of exaggeration that leads to push back from the “apologists”. But don’t equate that defence with “he is blameless” because he isn’t. He is a micromanager which killed him as a head coach, because he couldn’t decide if he wanted to manage the game or draw up the offence, and he was incapable of doing both effectively. He is not head coach material, no debate there.
Khari...i say nope...as that was a drop back and chuck offense...stretching field...taking chances
Durant...could care less about Rider drivel...but from what I recall wasnt that slop Lapo serves up now...was more a standard push it offence...and a QB who made stuff happen with legs...same with Buck's handfull of games where he was healthy...they pushed the ball....didnt play the style he promotes now.
Matt Nicols as well started out here with a more vertical attack, and it morphed into the Lapo way...and Streveler was just fine his first season as a thrower, and a runner...he got nuetered when Lapo realized what a runner he was, and made him into this gimmick project, and it hampered his success as a passer, and he rarely was in schemes to be throw first...and teams seen it, as did everyone else...when he came in you knew exactly what was gonna happen. There was no way it was Lapo's brainwave that got Strev his NFL look....he got a look as he had 4 yrs now under his belt as a QB with success, as coming out of school he basically had barely 2 yrs as a QB....but if you look at his tape he was a passer with gaudy passing stats, and great running stats.
if you take what Boomer says as an indication of anything...I dont know what to say....based on 1 play...thats just laughable
Collaros was able to make things work within that Lapo system but if you break it down and look at it...he went off script, and looked downfield, and created plays...look at Harris recieving numbers when Collaros took over, as well as target location on the field....it all but dried up for Harris, as did the targets from 2-3 yards from line of scrimmage and behind....and the teams over all record since is reflective of the play not to lose Lapo scheme...
He was decent to a point in the early stages of his career, but after he did his U.S tour of football clubs to "gather" ideas, he turned himself into a self generated smartly pants. trying to be the smartest dude in the room and the results from that point on forward were average at best....we won the cup here in 2019 despite his system...not because of it...

thing with Roberts...for a little dude who didnt train,,,,he carried the load injury free basically...and how many games did we watch him in the fourth quarter when everyone knew he was getting the ball just grind out first down after first down to kill out the clock...phenomenal what he did, in the tiny lil cheeseburger lovin smoking body...interesting fact tho...strength wise and if he did enter the weight room he was phenomenally strong...like almost in an unbelievable way...lil fella just was gifted...too bad he didnt stay on track here and get in 3 or more good years

Harris, Lawler, Stove... Most of our biggest free agent losses have ended up injured this year.
yeah....hard to say if Lawler would have got hurt here...likely not having to dive all over the field to make catches,,,but Stove did himself in training...and Harris was inevitable in my opion...so 2/3rds of a bullet dodged

Obviously, but the trashbag voters decided to Barry Bonds' him. Laugh if you will but Trevor Harris was on pace for over 5000 yards passing and likely 30+ total TD's before his injury. He was averaging over 300 yards passing per game that year through 13 weeks.....Would have been much more deserving over Fajardo's pedestrian stats.
yup...said all along that Harris got jobbed, and the Faj got it cause he was the only QB to play 18 games....so got it by default basically as his accumulation of stats..that yes were nothing special just out produced every other QB.....but was far from the MOP...he was 3rd in passing yards...behind guys with less games...7th in tds thrown in league (4th in West) heck Nichols had more than him in only 9 games...wasnt even the rushing leader for QB's....Strev had more in way less reps...the fact he got the MOP was a joke....but a blessing as it snookered the Riders into going all in on him...haha....and been 2 yrs of awesomeness lol
-
after his split with wife, and her and kids went back to the U. S he fell into a dark place....and was very depressed...I helped him out a few times prior to his trade away and was sad where he ended up....I will give him credit the dude cared...bled blue and gold, but he did lack the training part of it, but he didnt have to, and he knew it as it was that way with him all his life...too bad he didnt have a real mentor, or a coach who really pushed him in highschool and college....but soley based on accomplishments, and how he affected teams preparation to stop him...he was one of the best...and not just on the Bomber

I remember a no show in the Grey Cup too......
My point is yes he was amazing but he could have been the best ever if he had given a s**t.
yup....too bad he didnt really....he did on the field....but not so much to prepare for it
as for the no show....he wasnt alone....but for some reason he gets the brunt of that anger...there were quite a few who let the team down...some whom would surprise you but is never mentioned...and not a lot know
-
wonder if he asked for it, since he was relegated to PR this yr...and they have a vet group there more or less and hoped to get an opp somewhere else...He's head and shoulders better than Holm and Parker as it stands now, plus has 2 yrs experience in league as well...so is less apt to be caught off guard with a different look from an offence...we have had good luck picking up cast offs later in yr...worked well with Taylor...
-
Harriso tho wasnt a wasted space....just we never put him out there...so a waste in we coulda used the spot elsewhere...even in the one game where a receiver went down...he didnt get a singal rep...so what was the point of dressing him....I like him and his potential tho and hope he brought back next yr like Agudosi was

Walby is the best at his position to ever play. He absolutely should have been first.
yup...agreed....and in a few yrs he will be the second best...with the best also being up there, and a long tenured Bomber....7 of his 12 yrs have been here, and I truly think he has 1 more in him....and when he goes into the CFL Hall of Fame as the best there ever was, you can guarantee it will be in Bomber colors...we been blessed to have him here for 7 yrs now, and is super awesome he got rewarded with 2 Cups...so far....as he was loyal and hung in and was key to turning the room around...even when first few yrs were fugly

Last year he had some good production in a couple games where they targeted him a dozen times, but he has been below average since then and in other games around then. The guy is slow, fat, and lazy...there I said it.
Every team loses a game or two a year that they should have won. It is near impossible for a team to go 18 games without laying an egg once in a while. It happens. Sometimes, as a team you lose focus for a few days or you are just plain tired and it catches up. People reading or extrapolating anything from the Hamilton game are overthinking it. The only thing we learned from that game is that the Bombers, just like every other team, need to be focused and energized in order to win. No flaw fatales or chinks in the armor were discovered by Hamilton...our guys just laid and egg and let it snowball for one game.
last year he got the bulk of his production in one game...140 some yards I believe...and in the WF he got the bulk on that BS catch that wasnt a catch, and the TD only because the field conditions and Taylor skidded out...and BA had to take trepid steps trying to clean up the mess as to not wipe out as well....other than that...he didnt do much of anything other than bring a out of shape body, and cancerous character and a bad influence on the younger players there....and you see it still today as to how many act...as they are following the lead of their "leader'

It absolutely does. Maybe it shouldn’t but it does. Walby was chosen as the first member ever of the ROH over Ploen, and the club even acknowledged at his ceremony how fitting it was that a native-born Winnipegger was the first one up there. When Harris goes up there, a large part of the narrative will be how the home town guy came back specifically to end the drought and restore glory to Winnipeg.
yeah...I would think a Winnipegger who had a stellar career..especially for a number of yrs here would be a recipient before a 2..3 yr American who had a good to great time here....it does have a lot of bearing
-
theres a bit of give an take...late 80' and into 90's there was a ton of roided up monsters...so some of the line play would be on par...skilled position guys tho is easily swayed toward todays players...the big stars of the past would still succeed...but those second tier players would be dominated

I hear you, but at some point at injuries do need to be taken into account to establish an “elite” status. If the Rider receivers all stayed healthy, they could well have 4 1,000 receivers, but they won’t because they can’t stay on the field. That is part of what keeps them from being “elite”, that they aren’t living up to their best potential.
I love Demski and had him pegged as the MOC at season’s start, but his durability has held him back a bit. I want to see him actually hit the 1,000 mark more than once before I declare him elite. But I am with you that I would not trade our core for pretty much any other team’s (maybe not even for BC’s) because the potential for greater things is sure there. Not really worth splitting hairs over what is defined as “elite”, we have a great group that is a tremendous overall unit where any one of them can step up when another is being blanketed and possibly neutralized.
not in that offense....and not with Faj they wouldnt have....I can maybe see 2 guys in that group get 1000's...thats it...only so many balls to go aroiund....and to have 3 guys with 1000 takes an elite QB and just as elite guys catching it...of which they have nobody who is eleite...Evans and The Doucher maybe in 2019 were elite, but thats 4 yrs ago

Agree with this and most comments on the Rider trio. KSB is solid and if made the feature guy might become elite. Evans needs to stay healthy to get back to star potential, not sure if he’ll get back there. Williams should be better than he has performed given his size and what his ceiling was, but he is such a head care it gets in the way of everything else, and he has been living off his pre-NFL reputation when in reality he has been way sub-par since he got back. The “Nuke Laloosh” of the CFL (“million dollar hands, ten cent brain” - and frankly million dollar is way too generous, he’s worth a few thousand at peak levels). Moore is to me a lesser version of Clarence Denmark, and again injuries have derailed his progress. With the group as a whole it’s like the total is less than the sum of its parts.
Not totally sure the current configuration of the Bombers is “elite” right at this moment, but the whole is greater than the sum of its individual parts for sure. Demski and Bailey you’d expect to be pushing 1,000 yards each instead of 500-600 (injuries to Demski do affect that number somewhat) so just looking at that you might think “meh”, but they both step up in clutch situations and do the little things like downfield blocking, getting open for Collaros on broken plays and not quitting, and clearing out routes for others that don’t show up on the stats sheet.
Demski's missed 4 games....and if didnt would likely have that 1000 already, or close to it...same could be said with Ellingson...if all 3 had been healthy all yr pretty sure it would be 3 1000 yard receiver's here
Bailey started slow, but wasnt used much tho was clutch when he was....he being targeted more now, and is still clutch....we also have 3 receivers in the top 7 of TD receptions....how is that not elite type status?....and factor in these guys block the hell out of things for the run game and each other, not to mention run the ball too....and when one guy goes down....always someone steps up....they are good...deep...and team first guys...I wouldn't trade or group for any group in the league....we have an elite group here
-
haha....what a hack article that was....a team that scores one offensive touchdown was never in the game....and they hardly could run the ball without an american back behind a now serviceable oline....or claims to be serviceable....The Faj sure didnt get sacked but was hounded all night....and that was with all the blatant holds.....too funny

This. Love Jake but no chance. Jeffcoat would go up before him and even he doesn’t have much of a chance.
kyrie Wilson if he can come back and sustain his play earlier this year and in the stretch run last year would go up.
Thomas I am sure will get a spot in the Bomber Hall tho...tenure of 12 yrs...2 cups....that alone I think gets him in
BA and Jeffcoat...will need to really pour it on for ROH status...but slam dunk Bomber HOF guys..Neuf as well...same with Yosh...I know u cant put all gyuys in from an era...but this era has had some special guys who turned this ship around....Sure wish Randal was able to get that extra yr here to be rewarded too...he was a key guy with big Stan to turn this around...and worked hard to make that culture shift when the first few yrs here under Osh were a bit sketchy....and he also noticed what was within BA and basically annointed him and groomed him as the future leader and helped shape who he is today....guy deserves a lot of credit for where we are today culture wise

Demski is one of those guys who's not there yet, but still has time to do special things.
Ring of Honour discussions are hard, because it is the highest honour. Not making it isn't an insult, you need to be the top of the top and have had team success.
We can't put every talented role player up there. And I also don't love the idea of guys who have only played for the Bombers for 2ish seasons - especially if they've had long careers for other teams.
Bryant is the only player who could retire tomorrow and has already done enough, imo.
yup...Willy tho will have been here longer than anywhere in his career next yr...already is now with 3 yrs....and is one of the straws that stirs the drinks for the back to back seasons...Biggie is getting close...but the awards he won here, the cuos...and being one of the Culture leaders/instituters...gives him in my opinion a spot

But they should have been doing this for the past three seasons. It's wild how terribly they've been run.
100% needs to start with O'Day. He is responsible for bringing in all the crap.
O'day has been a serious failure there....he is one of big reasons they have spiraled into the abyss
52 minutes ago, GCn20 said:You have to have locker room leaders willing to buy in and help too. It's not all on the coach to make this happen. Players follow their locker room leaders lead. To get 100% buy in, like the Bombers have, you have to have guys who set the example and are willing to go the extra mile to get everyone else on board. Strong coaching certainly is also another prerequisite, but you have to recruit the right players, find the right leaders, and have a coaches vision they can believe in and sell. When a locker room, and I use this term loosely, leader like Nick Marshall is openly feuding with his HC on social media it is a sure sign that there is a massive breakdown in the character and communication in that locker room. Any Rider fan hoping that the Riders will somehow overcome this and go through the East and win the Grey Cup at home is delusional. The Riders are a tire fire.
Thats key there 100%...if u have idiots as your leaders...well you end up with a team infested with em

To me the best part of Schoen's success is the attention it is creating down south. I was at a conference in Texas last month and met a guy from Kansas, knows Schoen's parents. Everyone in town is getting together to watch the games. When he found out I was from Winnipeg all he wanted to talk about was the Bombers, never mind any of the business that was actually why we were in Austin.
