Rids got a reaction from TBURGESS in Future fans of the CFL?
I'd love to see the CFL get involved in sponsoring a flag football league similar to how the NFL does. It's great to see these kids here wearing NFL logos on their flag football jerseys (that are all good quality shirts) and they get involved that way. The sponsorship keeps the cost low to the families which is #1 in expanding the reach.

Good article Rids.  For what it's worth, throwing in a "Quarterbacks" sub-header might make that first section a bit clearer (unless I missed it).

I didn't have the time to go thru all the records in recent years but I know that the east wasn't the dismal pit of failure every season in the last 20 years like some people are choosing to "remember".  There have been some dreadful years for sure, but more often than not it was Montreal putting up one of the better records in the league, with Winnipeg and Toronto fighting for that second spot with records that were around .500.  Some years the stars of suckage aligned and one of Winnipeg/Toronto would combine with Hamilton and Ottawa to create a battle of the least, but for the most part the eastern teams that made the playoffs had reasonable records.

I don't think anybody is saying that he's a must sign player. He's a player of interest because he's a former first round draft pick and holds the right passport.

If anybody is defending him it could be because you're so negative on him. Ease back on the throttle iso!!! He's not a Bomber and likely never will be.

I think most defensive co-ordinators in the CFL would adjust things to fit Ted Laurent.

Etch had Chunky Adams in the middle with Saskatchewan once upon a time.

Ameet Pall though isn't looking like an every down DL. Instead he's projecting as a bull rush situational DL which makes finding a fit tougher. The expanded rosters help though.

Rids got a reaction from TBURGESS in Max's HOT TAKE of the Day: the meaninglessness of the running game in the CFL
The Riders lead the CFL in percentage of first down plays being a running play at 52% and they also lead the CFL in average passing yards on first down plays at 9.3 yards per pass. They also lead the league in most rushing yards per game and the only team ahead of them in total yards per game has played more games. George Cortez has stayed dedicated to using the run as part of their attack and is more stubborn than most when it comes to dropping the run when they fall behind.

BC leads the league with the highest average number of running plays per game at 22.0.

On the flip side the Toronto Argos not only lead the league in total yards, net yards, average yards per game, passing yards, passing plays per game and most offensive plays but sport a 2-4 record. They are a pass first team (on first down they pass 72% of the time) and dedicated to it (and fairly good at it if their receivers would stop getting hurt) but not turning it into results. In part because they are also the 7th best running team in the League.

Ridley says browning is a good fit for the CFL and judging by the video, it's hard to disagree with him. He looks to have all the skills needed to be a good CFL qb. Will he be? Only time will tell, probably won't see the field anytime soon. Not a fan of people who write guys off without seeing them play first.

Rids got a reaction from TrueBlue in CBA / Non-import discussion
Actually every junior player that ages out is exactly like this. They are never eligible for a CFL draft or supplemental draft and are simply free agents. The CFL still has an opening for players to go directly from high school to the pro level and the territorial rights have graduated to cover the junior teams.

Same with every Canadian that goes to a Junior College in the States if they return to Canada and don't enroll in a 4 year institution are free agents as well. There are a few of those every year.

    Keep this in mind:

The CFL is seriously lacking in the area of case study over non-import status and what to do with players that don't fit the strict confines of the rules.

A clear example of that was two years ago at the Quebec Regional where they invited a player from Holland College in PEI but there was confusion surrounding his status for the draft. Holland is a school that doesn't qualify at the Canadian University level so technically it's at the same level as the CJFL but the CFL had never discussed how to handle a university club level football team and what happens then.

The entire club league in the Maritimes is up in the air as it's not governed by territorial rights but some of the schools are four year degree offering schools but they don't play a schedule completely against four year degree offering schools. Likely it will take a high quality player coming out of that league for them to address it. I'd like to see them handle it sooner though.

If the version I saw was the final then imports that establish Canadian residency (fancy way to say go to a Canadian school) for 4 years will be granted non-import status and enter the draft.

Basically the American half of the Simon Fraser University roster will be able to play as a non-import along with the handful of Americans/internationals that attend CIS schools. Ups the draft class by about 25 to 30 guys a year I'd guess.

Doc Cassama was rejected because his initial training was American football. Now if they started a Canadian football league in Sweden then those guys might earn non-import status too... (total gongshow)

Well in the situation of an experienced player beyond the age of 25 he wouldn't fit into the structure of a normal draft.

We may learn exactly what steps are going to be used thanks to this new CBA that has new non-import requirements. This opens the door for players like Doc Cassama, Laval's kicker Bede and basically the entire Simon Fraser roster to qualify as non-imports regardless of location of birth.

Laval's former kicker will be older than the 25 year old age limit.

Korey Banks fits into The Etch defense better than you may expect.

I'd agree with that. A little of the Al Davis School of Drafting. For what it's worth Ty Pencer ran a 4.62 40 while a Sr. in high school which did a lot in the way of getting him that scholarship to Washington State. He was originally recruited as a DT and flipped to OT during his redshirt year. As a redshirt-freshman he was made starter at LT halfway through the season. The Cougars had two Canadians starting on their OL at one point with Joe Eppele starting at RT.

The reason why Edmonton got Laurent with a 2nd round pick in the supplemental was because Winnipeg used their 1st on Poblah. Edmonton offered a 2nd round on Poblah forcing the Bombers to use their 1st.

Either way a 1st and 2nd were going for those two individuals it just depended on who went where.

The 2 additional guys are 1 non-import and 1 import.

There will be 3 designated imports per team now up from the 2 last year.

This change was agreed on already by the CFL and CFLPA during the off season (perhaps back when Mike Morreale was still in charge).

Part of what the reserve roster was originally set up for was to have up to four protected players from the old practice roster that other teams couldn't just pick up. The CFLPA arranged that they would get a full game cheque for being on the 46 man roster during the last CBA discussion.

Remember the two way contracts that the CFLPA didn't want? The reason for that was so that CFL teams could shuffle players from the 46 man roster (primarily for the bottom 4 to 6 players on the roster) to the PR without having to release them and have them sign a PR contract. I think for young players, especially on their second team after being drafted, it would be a smart contract to sign. When they know they'll only see the field in about half the games but be able to do it without getting released is a bonus.

This "2 new active roster players" thing is being misinterpreted by a lot of people, fans and players alike. There are no new costs associated with the 2 new roster spots, they're simply expanding the game day roster from 42 to 44 and decreasing the size of the reserve roster from 4 to 2. It's still 46 game cheques being handed out (the players on the 4 man reserve get a game cheque too) it's just that teams can now dress 2 extra players instead of paying them to stand in civvies on the sideline.
