  1. Here's the thing about Burke and his complaints regarding a lack of talent.

Similar talent was at least competitive under LaPolice. We may not have won a ton of games, but at least we felt like we had a chance to win. I watch this team now and all I can think is that they have absolutely no chance. Given that these are professional athletes competing against other professional athletes, you'd think we could at least put up somewhat of a fight.

To me, the main issue with this team is coaching. Top to bottom, they are doing absolutely nothing to improve the skillset of our roster. I can count on one hand the number of players we've had during the Delmonaco/Howell/Burke regime who have improved under their watch. Most of our imports seem to get worse the more they work with our coaches. Matthews came here and lit the world on fire, now he can't catch. Denmark was a ROY candidate, now he's a spare part who struggles to get open. Simpson played on instinct last year and seemed dominant at times, but struggled this year with our new offensive schemes. Our defensive backs, aside from Washington, seem to be getting worse. Ian Wild and Desia Dunn both debuted incredibly strong and now look mediocre (maybe a byproduct of our entire defense) ... in two years, they couldn't teach Alex Hall how to time his break well enough to avoid going offside. Mike Sims-Walker was highly touted enough to get his own press conference as a CFL rookie when he came here and now he can't even crack the lineup because Howell can't get through to him on the waggle. And don't even get me started on what our quarterbacks are doing in their development.

It's ridiculous. Our coaching is garbage. Talent level may be on the lower end but they could still produce a LOT better with some average coaches.

I was trying to think to myself earlier about who was actually playing as well as expected or better and I realized that most of the names were people new to the team. Kelly, Ian Wild, I completely agree with you that players come here and get worse the more they are exposed to the coaching. One of the things that Lapo did manage to do well was get players to improve, at least it seems to me that he did at least a little bit. This coaching staff needs a complete over haul or it won't matter which players they bring in.

  2.

I think, as a defense, we're too light up front.  Our tackles get moved around too easily .. and, outside of Bryant Turner, aren't enough of a physical presence.  Do they make themselves felt?  Are they athletic and pursue well?  Yes.  Could we get better play there .. absolutely .. but I agree with what you're saying ..

but that's what the coaches want though. They wanted the highly athletic fast interior guys. If they had wanted the big immovable DT then you can be sure that they'd be looking for one. The defensive line works well within the system they're put together so I don't think we can say that they're failing to address an issue there.

  3. The people at the top though are the ones that should be saying that because that's basically their job. The coach though, his job is to get the most out of what he is given to work with and Burke has not come close to doing that. Which players are having a career year on this team? Which players are meeting or exceeding expectations?

  4.

Burke doesn't deserve to keep his job. And I don't agree with most of what he says. Below is every direct quote from Burke. Please show me where he throws Mack "totally under the bus". Also, please help me figure out which specific players he threw under the bus that has you so disgusted:

“I don’t think I’ll go through any more adversity than this year,”
“So if I stayed strong through this, then I’ll be a better head coach in the future. It’s easier to deal with success than it is failure."
“As a team at least we’ve been competitive. We’ve gone out and given great effort. In some areas we’ve gotten better. We do have some personnel deficiencies, and some of those deficiencies are hard to overcome, so we’ll try to address those in the off-season.”
“We definitely have to improve our scouting, and it just isn’t going to happen overnight,” he said. “It’s going to take two or three years to really get to where we want to get to. The first stage is to try to be a playoff team. The next phase is to be competitive towards the Grey Cup, and the third phase is to win the Grey Cup.
“We’re going to have to acquire personnel that helps us get there, and we have a plan to try to get us to that first phase, hopefully within a year.”
“It’s different, that’s for sure,” Burke said. “The great thing is all three of us work together well. I feel it is more of a collaborative effort, and hopefully we all hang around together and can move forward, because I think we got a great plan to move forward.”
“My job is to try to help keep the team motivated,” Burke said. “I want us to go out there and play with passion and I want us to go out there and play with great effort, and I want us to try and get better as a team. If we do that, then I feel like I’ve done my job.”

can't get much clearer than that

I clearly don't agree with Burke but I don't think he deserves **** for this one.  Anything he said would be ripped here.  "I've been crap, definitely deserve to be canned" would get him crucified too.

well clearly the smart thing to do is not say anything.

Oh please, then we'd find something else to attack him on.  Perhaps his lack of confidence in answering a question.  Or why he would clearly ignore a question directly posed to him from the media.

Burke does plenty of stupid things and deserves criticism for all of them.  This is not one of them.  This is Troy Westwood-level criticism right here.

It's not hard to say things like "all I can do is worry about winning game this year and whatever they decide to do they decide to do" says nothing and still answers the question. Seriously this isn't complicated.

"Look, Coach Burke doesn't even care about what happens next season cause he's already checked out! Fire him now already! Him being on the team when he clearly doesn't care about what happens going forward is only going to hurt our team long-term." You're right, slamming him regardless of what he says isn't that complicated.

The fact that he didn't answer the question in the exact way you wanted him to framed perfectly to fit your expectations doesn't mean he handled it wrong.

instead he threw the fired GM totally under the bus, he threw his players under the bus and he quite frankly insulted the intelligence of everyone who follows this team by contradicting what he said before the season started. Yeah that's much better. Burke at this point is simply saying anything and everything to make excuses for himself and it is absolutely disgusting.

  7. It's also very comical to see Burke talk about how well he works with Walters and Miller, seems to me in the offseason he was talking about how he worked well with Joe Mack, seems that he was also very happy with the talent on the team, especially the addition of guys like Cauchy and how he felt that Crowton was a brilliant coach who could be a head coach if he wanted to... and how he couldn't wait for Buck to get healthy last season and how he was so confident in him this year, and how great a prospect Goltz was at qb... Burke is full on desperation mode. Not even trying to win games just trying to make excuses to save his job. Put him out of his misery right now I don't care who you give the last few games to but Burke has got to go the sooner the better. They could fire Burke tomorrow and it would be too late.

  8. I did a comparison of Lapos record and Burkes record in another thread, it's pretty easy to see from that that Burke has been as big a dud at head coach as this team has ever had. If the Bombers foolish retain Burke for another season I hope to go they are prepared for an empty stadium. year and a half of blowouts under Tim Burke is having even the diehards not caring about the team, that alone should be enough for them to boot Burke out as soon as the season is over.

  9. I don't think Reed is the only one to blame in Edmonton, ultimately the players have to take ownership of their own bodies too and I have no doubts that Reilly is so competitive that he wants to be out there regardless. That's the biggest thing, it's not a physical thing that prevents them from playing, they figure they can just suck it up and fight through it but that can make things worse. It's a hell of a lot better these days now that things are better understood.

  10. 17 my point was that it was Burke's defense that kept us competitive.

Lapolices offense was terrible, almost as bad as it is today. Do we not remember how great our defense was and how they kept us in the game while Buck and Brink sputtered...

but the offense was never THIS bad. How come Burke can't get his defense playing up to that level again? Is that not part of a head coaches job? Getting coordinators in here who can get the most out of their respective areas of the team? That's why Lapo was fired after all. Burke hasn't put anything good on the field.

  11. There seems to be a perception that this team needs to start two import tackles. If they could get a decent Canadian starting at tackle, that would be a step in the right direction, IMO.

Not saying that's Neufeld, but Neufeld could be depth or maybe a half-decent starter.

And even if they do start two imports @ OT going forward, there's no reason why a Canadian can't back them up.

I think it's a case that right now we seem to have 2 options at tackle who are imports and look to be pretty good. If the team is serious about addressing the offensive line issue it makes the most sense to play those two imports there and look for NIs to strengthen the interior of the line. Now obviously things may change with regards to the ratio in the offseason but to me it just makes a hell of a lot of sense to stick with the 2 imports on the o-line philosophy for now.

  12.

The car might have been a clunker but it still ran with Lapo driving. The day he was fired, the wheels fell off completely.

    I totally disagree

The team was very bad and only our rock solid defense kept us competitive.

The moment Burke left the defense to be hc and also the moment Harris passed away the teams defense took a massive nose dive.

Forget not our offense has sucked since Jules was traded and buck became really glass Joe from punch out.

    Lapo sucked big time.

Key word bolded. Lapo wasn't a great coach, I don't think he was even a good coach truthfully but he kept that team competitive, with Burke in charge the team rolls over and dies each week.

  13.

Looks like everyone finally agrees on what Joe Mack's legacy will be.

I actually still pin this on lapo and Burke more so then Mack.

It all goes back to poor offense and sticking with buck for two seasons to many.

A huge part of the problem was Lapo and his vanilla offense and the two seasons of patchwork of then trying to repair it.

The GM is the architect. And Mack is the one who designed this mess. As bad as Burke is, Bud Grant couldn't have won with this group.

Lapo won with this group for a while, Bud Grant obviously could. Macks biggest failing was not finding the right man at head coach. Good coaches make everything look better. Hell look no further than Brendan Tamans time here, good coaches and the team did well bad coaches and it looked terrible.

  14. the surgery he had in the offseason has fixed the problem, it's stronger now than it has ever been. Seriously people who have no clue always like to spout nonsense like it's gospel but RNH is in no way shape or form too frail for the NHL.

  15. yeah guy who has had 1 injury in his career, a nagging shoulder injury from jr.s that he got fixed in the offseason is too fragile to play, give me a break. Watch the kid play sometime, he played 28 minutes last night, he is a lot stronger in his core and legs than people give him credit for. He's 6'1 and listed at 180 pounds for gods sake

  16. im truly stunned that the concept of not caring, not watching, not paying attention are even being discussed, let alone acted upon.

its the bombers for christ sakes, the reason for this forum.. shitty, embarrassing or horrendous to bare thru, its our football team we claim to be fans of and love so much..

It's not a choice and it's not something any of us are happy with but the product that the Bombers are putting on the field is so bad we don't even expect them to be competitive let alone win. If the Bombers don't make changes in the offseason to the head coaching position nothing is going to change. Burke is a crappy head coach who inspires no confidence all that will happen is the Bombers will go through another season of bad losses and fans will not care. You have to be some kind of bad to make the absolute die hards who never miss a game stop caring and that's what Tim Burke is managing to pull off.
