  1. What's with all this 'couldn't hack it at HB'...  SAM is one, if not the, toughest positions on D.

Another weird TC...  we'll head into the season with a new SAM, WIL, HB, S (at least)....  and then I wouldn't be surprised at all if our OL is exactly the same as last year.

We'll find out pretty soon whether our OL looked good because Elliott was good at play-action or if they actually did 'gel'.

It's the place that older dbs who are slowing down have been moved to in order to extend their careers for over a decade! It's harder in the mental sense but doesn't require the same amount of speed, which is why it's a good place for veterans to move to. They lose some speed but make up for it with the veteran experience.

  2. seems pretty straightforward.... Burke tells Hefney he's not good enough to play halfback anymore but he would fit at nickle... Hefney stubbornly refuses to do that and he was cut. Guy really should have played the position... he's good at it! Never understand why a guy won't play what ever position the coaches ask of him.

  3. The one thing that I like about what they're saying regarding Etienne is that he's catching everything. Hands matter more than just about everything else for a receiver and it' sthe #1 thing that's keeping Poblah from being the guy everyone expected him to be when he was draftred. I really hope Etienne grabs a starting role and does well with it because it really would go a long way to vindicating the draft strategy from this team.

  4. It's not one standalone decision that doesn't make sense, it's that once you piece together the chain of events, it's very strange.

    Put all these statements together.

"You paid a guy 35k upfront to sign a new deal in January"

"You thought he suffered from a drop off in play last year"

"You wanted him to switch positions and discussed it with him in June"

"You cut him for football reasons after a misdemeanor charge prior to camp"

    That doesn't add up.

Well it could be a coach and GM on different wavelengths or it could indicate a team that wanted to kepe the guy because of his history with the team but said guy kept giving them reasons to dump him...

I know Hefney was a real popular Bomber and one of the best on the team for a while, but the guy is also a bad attitude and we saw how that went last season... I see this as giving a guy a 2nd chance and him not recognizing that he needed to change and got released because of it.  I just don't see the point in being too upset over this. I don't believe Hefney at this stage is THAT good that it's an insurmountable loss.

  5. yeah, it's one of those damned if you do - damned if you don't scenarios... but at least if they'd have done it Mike's way they could've put the cash (and more time) into finding Hefney's replacement at HB/Nickel

You know what, I got no problems giving a guy like that, who was arguably the teams best defensive player for a couple seasons a chance to change his ways even if it costs some cash upfront. Hefney was a damned good player for the bombers. Now whether they should have cut him outright or if they coulda leveraged a token draft pick out of some team or not is a different matter entirely.

  6. So why is this NOT a conversation they had before giving him a huge signing bonus in January? Burke is not a new coach, he had time to figure this out.

This is just a stupid move altogether.

you know what, if Hefney isn't willing to do what the team feels is in the teams best interest then you really have to part ways with the guy. Yeah he's got talent.... but me first players need to be replaced with guys all pulling in the same direction.

  7. The amount of times Burke talked about how the secondary needed to pick it up or he didn't like the effort from the veteran dbs you had to expect something like this happening. I really don't think that this had anything to do with the pot bust, I think they were just looking to make a change at db from day one and Hefney was the guy they put on notice and he didn't respond in the way they wanted.

  8. in that case, perhaps Jones should've just had his rookies and backups play a completely different defence to the one that he'll have his squad play all season...

...he wouldn't be able to see if they could play and understand his schemes... but at least he wouldn't hurt anyone's feelings and maybe Pierce could have stayed on the field for a sixth or seventh play.

your argument falls flat based on the fact that the blitzing immediately stopped after Buck was pulled. You should just accept the truth of the matter, Jones wanted to hurt Pierce in preseason simple as that.

  9. Great point!  I can't believe all the pissing and moaning on the other site about how bad we looked.  A certain idiot clown is already asking for Burke's head, if you can believe it. It's a pre-season game for goodness sakes.  The best strategy is to not reveal very much if anything in the pre-season about your playbook. It's about evaluating the guys you have while bullets (albeit rubber) are flying.  If the other teams want to win the pre-season Grey Cup they are welcome to it.

Yeah I don't care how bad the team looked, I mean rider fans are super pumped about that game last night but I saw a couple real sloppy teams that were lucky the other teams kept making mistakes... The things I'm concerned with are things that we talked about a lot in the offseason. Whether Burke is the man, Pierce being back, all that kinda stuff.

  10. I would have a hard time singling out anyone player for a loss, no matter how big or small.  I was just pointing out that the game in question, was not just the coaches who would be to blame, as you so stated.

but ultimately, if a team so completely fails to show up it reflects more on the coaches than the players. obviously the players played badly... but why did they do that? Gotta blame the coaching first and foremost.

  11. sorry. disagree completely.

i saw Bomber QBs taking more and harder hits than any other team's QBs. no, that's not all on the O-Line (the QBs and Crowton/Lapo can share the blame), but nobody can tell me that Bomber QBs were protected well.

are you including the entire year or just looking at how things went towards the end of the season? Because to the start of the year it was horrendous, but it did get better as the year went on, and the sooner Swiston pushes Morley to the sidelines the better it will be.Saw a much improved running game as the season wore on as well. Looking at where they started the year and where they finished only a fool would dismiss the dramatic improvement.

  12. when a QB gets pulled for fear of OMG BLITZES! i think that the line still may be a work in progress...

pfffft in preseason? Burke flat out said that they didn't have any of their protection schemes in. Never mind that the idea behind taking pierce out was just the fear of him getting hurt which is an entirely different set of problems. But if you think the bombers o-line isn't getting there then you weren't paying attention last season.

  13. i guess that's it. his highs are way higher, but his lows are lower and more frequent than Glenn's.

This will come across badly to most people as well but I much prefer Glenns attitude to Hanks as well. Glenn is just the quiet even keeled guy, but I'd take that over how much of a phony Burris is. Burris talks a great game... until something goes poorly then he pouts and whines and points fingers. I tell you I can appreciate the local sports team a LOT more with Burris gone.

  14. the record still reflects: 1 GC to none for Hank.

can we agree on this: Hank does more things that can lose you a game than Glenn... but Glenn doesn't do as many things that can win you a game as Hank.  ?

Is that a way of saying Burris is a better athlete and is more capable of physically imposing himself on a game? cause yeah, obviously. But Hank is still as big a choker as Glenn. Burris may have much higher peaks, but the lows are every bit as low and show up at the exact same times.

  15. Burris has a past bad rap of choking and it's a justified knock on him... but you can't say he's more of (or as much of a) a choker than Lil Kev.

Sure I can. There were some damned good stamps teams that Burris crapped the bed for in the playoffs. Hell that's the biggest reason I have Durant ahead of him, Durant often beat him in the playoffs in Calgary. Burris got one Grey Cup out of a lot of good stamps teams, even Glenn has a couple grey cup appearances to his credit and he may well have won one as well if not for a broken arm in 2007.

  16. i'd like to see what Lulay could do on a weaker team too... but i still think he's one rung below Ray and Calvillo and still getting better. i just don't see anything about Durant that makes me believe he'll ever be better than say, Kevin Glenn with a better body. Burris can (and does) pick a team up and win the game for them... i don't think i've seen Durant do that and i know i've never seen Glenn do it.

To me the qbs in the CFL go like this currently: Ray, Calvillo, Lulay, Durant, toss up between Tate/Glenn and Burris, Pierce, whoever the esks settle on. Burris can look great, but he's inconsistent and as much of a choker as Glenn is. There's a reason the stamps traded him.

  17. i'll give them the Kory Sheets bit... but they're the 3rd from worst at QB...

Just telling you how they think. One of the things that happens when you go to university in Western Manitoba and then move to Calgary is that you meet a lot of rider fans and learn how they think about that team... it's really something.

and honestly, I think you might be selling Durant short a bit. I have a hard time putting Burris definitively ahead of him, but then again I don't think a lot of Burris and I don't think Durant is THAT far behind Lulay either, just that the Lions are a better team. Hell I even forgot about the stamps... Durant gotta be ahead of those guys cause Tate still has a lot of prove and Glenn is Glenn.

  18.

    granted.

but: their optimism can't be totally unfounded... am i reading them wrong?

eg: average QB, average O-Line, good receivers, good RB... average D-Line that could be good depending on Chick, average LBs, good DBs but young and prone to brainfarts

But rider fans consider Durant to be a top teir qb, comparable with the Rays and Calvillos and Lulays, they consider their 0-line to be one of the best in the league, they consider their rb one of the best, they consider their d-line, especially with chick one of the best. I don't think you understand just how biased they are... Remember these are the fans that used to crow that Szarka was just as good as Mike Sellers... Hell I remember in about 2003 a rider fan telling me that Nealon Greene was just as good as Khari Jones!
