  1. It pains me to say it but Toronto appears to be on solid footing going into the season .. while I certainly agree with the sentiment that they over achieved in a weak Eastern conference .. they have a future Hall of Fame QB at the helm .. they are the defending Grey Cup champs .. as we've seen before, a little swag goes a long ways.

To me they get the early nod just based on less uncertainties. They know who their qb is, they know that they have a quality head coach. I'd put Montreal ahead if they didn't have a total question mark at head coach but for now we need to see what the new guy does for them, and if this is the year Calvillo finally craps out.

i want to think that this time, finally, Popp has made a big decision and gotten it wrong (Dan Hawkins)... but it just never seems to happen does it? based on Popp's track record, i'm going to presume that the Alouette's coaching will be at least solid (and likely better than that).

Calvillo's play will be the same as it's been lo these many years of his MOP calibre play... presuming he stay's uninjured. he's hard to get to, and even harder to get a hard lick on, but it takes less and less to hurt him (and get him of his game viz: EDF).

they could plummet... but their demise has been foretold so many times that it's just a cliche at this point for them to end up hosting playoff games when everyone thought they'd finally regress.

well sooner or later they'll fall off, I maintain that their "dominance" is overblown based on the east being so weak for so much of the last 15 years or so. Just some terrible teams in it for a lot of years. Hell any time the bombers had a winning record the Als weren't playing in the Grey Cup.

  2. Irving figures we are pretty set at import receiver (Edwards and Matthews) but Denmark COULD be challenged.

I wonder how long Edwards is able to hold on for... he's not getting any younger and the way Mack finds receivers.... Obviously his veteran presence is key but at what point do they decide that youth trumps experience?

  3. He also said that Fitzgerald was used a fair bit as a fullback in the drills today. Does this mean we'll actually be using a Fullback this year?

I think it's more like just the way the league is trending. Fullbacks are less fullbacks as they are tight ends. Get someone who can handle all the responsibilities of both and line up in a variety of positions on the field etc etc. Wouldn't expect a fullback to ever take a handoff, but catch passes out of the backfield for sure.

  4. Thanks to the good doctor for his report :D

Next up is Bob Irving and Kirk Penton on CJOB NOW.

is someone able to summarize anything interesting for those of us who can't listen? It'd be much appreciated.

    So far:

Everyone's raving about Max Hall. Irving thinks we'll see more of Goltz than we expect (in wildcat).

cool. Very intrigued by Hall, hopefully it translates into games and not just practises because this team sorely needs a fresh face at qb I think.

  6. Are nested quotes limited? I kinda like how Riderfans allows only one nested quote. Two would be okay as well. OB would get ridiculous sometimes with the massive "quote trains".

    Maximum currently set at 3.

If it becomes too messy, we can lower it to 1 or 2.

    i'd rather you up'd it.

I dunno, 3 seems like a good number.

  7. Speaking of cleaning house, It would ne nice if CBC finally get rid of Don Cherry.

SACRILEGE! How can people honestly say this? Cherry is nothing if not the most entertaining man in the hockey world. You haven't lived until you've drank along with the Don Cherry Piano Desk.

  8. All of you who get to attend the opener are VERY lucky -- gonna be a great night!! As for Cochrane, we saw him at the Memorial Cup in Brandon a few years back and they totally rocked it. Backed by Red Rider, they still had it. Was a great show!

I heard some idiots stole his coffee and muffins....

but yes it was a good show, for some reason a song like big league really was popular at a CHL event... no idea why...

  9. The more I look around the more I like this place. OB.com had gotten so stale and almost tedious, hopefully this place can liven things up a bit. Of course training camps opening up always helps that I guess, still good job guys.

  10. I would drive to New York, pick him up, and bring him straight to Winnipeg if Noel were to get sacked.

So many great coaches for hire out there right now. Ruff, Boucher, Torts, yet were stuck with Noel.

Have never, will never understand the hate for Claude Noel. What he gets out of this sad-sack roster is almost unbelievable. The Jets have little to no talent and have massively over-achieved for 1.5 seasons now. IMO, Noel should be up for Coach Of The Year.

Torts and Vaigneault would be massive downgrades. Now, if Quenville becomes available, that's another story....

    What about Dave Tippett?

If you want to watch soul destroying boring assed hockey sure. Good coach for sure, but his teams are about as exciting as watching paint dry.

The Jets have a good coach in Noel I think, fans just expect way too much out of a pretty crappy roster. It's going to be ugly seeing them play tougher western teams next year though. That cream puff SE division I think has fooled a lot of winnipeg fans into thinking the Jets are a better team than they actually are.

  11. Whoever can keep the Pens from winning. I detest teams who can win when the other team is busting their butts and they're just taking it easy.

I like the Pens but not because I live in Calgary & Iginla plays for them... Never been a true fan of the guy. When he was playing for the Flames all those years he missed the playoffs more than he made them. Never wanted to play in the World Championships. Rather be on the golf course in BC in April than representing his country. I always thought the way he turned his back on Team Canada was indicative of the kind of leader he was here in Calgary. Never hungry enough to inspire his teammates as Flames Captain. Always making excuses.

It was a shame Iginla shunned the worlds and team canada, but I think as far as a leader goes he was fantastic for the flames. Got a lot more out of those crappy, crappy rosters than they rightly should have.

  12. tried adding someone to my foes list... but it didn't work since he hasn't actually signed up yet.

a foes list works like an ignore function, right? (pretty please)

what's the point of having foes? If you block all the morons who can you possibly argue with?
