  1. the record still reflects: 1 GC to none for Hank.

can we agree on this: Hank does more things that can lose you a game than Glenn... but Glenn doesn't do as many things that can win you a game as Hank.  ?

Is that a way of saying Burris is a better athlete and is more capable of physically imposing himself on a game? cause yeah, obviously. But Hank is still as big a choker as Glenn. Burris may have much higher peaks, but the lows are every bit as low and show up at the exact same times.

  2. Burris has a past bad rap of choking and it's a justified knock on him... but you can't say he's more of (or as much of a) a choker than Lil Kev.

Sure I can. There were some damned good stamps teams that Burris crapped the bed for in the playoffs. Hell that's the biggest reason I have Durant ahead of him, Durant often beat him in the playoffs in Calgary. Burris got one Grey Cup out of a lot of good stamps teams, even Glenn has a couple grey cup appearances to his credit and he may well have won one as well if not for a broken arm in 2007.

  3. i'd like to see what Lulay could do on a weaker team too... but i still think he's one rung below Ray and Calvillo and still getting better. i just don't see anything about Durant that makes me believe he'll ever be better than say, Kevin Glenn with a better body. Burris can (and does) pick a team up and win the game for them... i don't think i've seen Durant do that and i know i've never seen Glenn do it.

To me the qbs in the CFL go like this currently: Ray, Calvillo, Lulay, Durant, toss up between Tate/Glenn and Burris, Pierce, whoever the esks settle on. Burris can look great, but he's inconsistent and as much of a choker as Glenn is. There's a reason the stamps traded him.

  4. i'll give them the Kory Sheets bit... but they're the 3rd from worst at QB...

Just telling you how they think. One of the things that happens when you go to university in Western Manitoba and then move to Calgary is that you meet a lot of rider fans and learn how they think about that team... it's really something.

and honestly, I think you might be selling Durant short a bit. I have a hard time putting Burris definitively ahead of him, but then again I don't think a lot of Burris and I don't think Durant is THAT far behind Lulay either, just that the Lions are a better team. Hell I even forgot about the stamps... Durant gotta be ahead of those guys cause Tate still has a lot of prove and Glenn is Glenn.

  5.

    granted.

but: their optimism can't be totally unfounded... am i reading them wrong?

eg: average QB, average O-Line, good receivers, good RB... average D-Line that could be good depending on Chick, average LBs, good DBs but young and prone to brainfarts

But rider fans consider Durant to be a top teir qb, comparable with the Rays and Calvillos and Lulays, they consider their 0-line to be one of the best in the league, they consider their rb one of the best, they consider their d-line, especially with chick one of the best. I don't think you understand just how biased they are... Remember these are the fans that used to crow that Szarka was just as good as Mike Sellers... Hell I remember in about 2003 a rider fan telling me that Nealon Greene was just as good as Khari Jones!

  6. Yes. Maybe one of the new guys will step up. Personally, I prefer a plan with fewer "what ifs"

The problem is there were what ifs no matter what we did... I would have been OK getting Glenn but that also brings up the question of what Calgary feels about the situation there and is it worth paying whatever the price is just for Kevin Glenn? We have been down that road before and while it was a mistake to dump Glenn with nothing left he's still not the guy you break the bank to acquire. Ultimately this teams qb situation will only be fixed internally so we might as well just keep hoping one of the backups has the right stuff.

  7. and this is why i hope Mack is the GM in Winnipeg for many years to come: an engaged fan who has been paying attention can take 2 minutes in a post to come up with a better plan than he can.

Yeah I'm not prepared to say that the qbs they brought in to back up Pierce aren't good options yet just because of one preseason game that turned out like ****. Plenty of preseason heroes have flopped when it mattered. I would suggest that Hall did OK playing in the situation he did. Lots of backups all over the field when he was out there, Goltz completed his passes when there's lots of backups around... Still time for those choices to be vindicated, it's continuing the drama with Pierce that is the issue and that to me all comes back to Burke being so dead set on Pierce.

  8. Here's my armchair GM off-season plan:

(Clearly Mack and Burke disagree with this)

    a) Cut Pierce and Brink

    B) Make a trade with Calgary for Glenn

    c) Have Elliott and Glenn fight it out for the #1 QB position

Is that a perfect solution?  Of course not...but I think it's better than what we have right now.

sigh... that woulda been the ideal course of action for the offseason...

  9. Personally I feel like the ability to "inspire" or "motivate" is overblown.  These guys shouldn't need motivation and if they do then maybe that's been the problem all along. Really I'd rather just have a coach that excels at the Xs and Os of the game.

If that were true you wouldn't see certain players perform better with certain people coaching. The key to coaching these days is really understanding what makes each individual player tick so you can get the best out of them every single day. Time have changed from the days when you just expected players to show up and be their best and if not the coach cracks the whip on them.

  10. Trouble is, we've kept most of the guys who showed no character last year. So, nothing's changed.

I think it's a bigger issue with not getting a coach that can inspire the players. Lapo was so passive and I don't think he was any screaming hell for firing up a team, and based on the evidence we have they respond even less to Burke... If this year doesn't work out then I think we can clearly say that Mack failed at being able to identify a quality head coach.

  11. 17, I guess my frustration is that without a qb to lead this team we'll continually spin our wheels. It just doesn't stop. We are stuck. No signs of getting out. When's the tow truck finally gonna show up? When are we going to hire a Head Coach/GM combo that will find us a qb??? Why can other teams do it & we can't??

I agree that we need a qb, but I just have issues with people thinking Reilly would have fixed anything. He was as much of a gamble as keeping Elliott or Brink would have been, as much of a gamble as hoping Hall is the guy.

I just think that as long as Pierce is here nothing is really going to change. They keep thinking "well maybe he can stay healthy and it'll all work out" but that's just desperate wishful thinking. Need to move on because I know that pretty much every single one of us fans is tired of the constant drama of whether the guy is going to be able to start the games or even finish the games. GIve the reps to someone else and let them sink or swim.

I would also question how many other teams can actually do it anyway. BC can find their own qbs, who else can? Hamilton had to go after Hank, the Ray deal was clearly underhanded, the riders managed to get Durant to play at a good level after trying a lot of different guys for a long time, other than that it's been teams hanging onto their own guys for a long long time, why do you think Kevin Glenn always has a job? There aren't a lot of qbs coming in that can play.

  12. Never mind the issue of a poor location for the ore is as it was displaced for suites and premium seating. The open air business was a sheer design flaw and there is not enough current seating to facilitate the CFL requirements for media and hosting the Grey Cup. Is that strike 2 or strike 3. Gee did we ask the CFL what there requirements would be?

you must be an angry bitter part of the media...

  13. That debacle wasn't just on the coaches.  It was an team completely unprepared, but also a team completely inept and unable to execute.  That one goes to the players as much as the coaches.

but to single people out even if you attribute it to players is wrong as well. It was a collective pants shitting by the team, I'm not going to be too hard on the qb for that just because he's the qb when everyone involved in that messed their drawers.

  14. Here's what drives me nuts....And others here I bet. Buck still gives us the best chance to win. Trouble is, he can't stay healthy. As backups both Elliott & Brnk couldn't win so the team decided to move on. Trouble was, move on to what? The prize free agent would have been Mike Reilly but he was traded by Wally to & signed by the Eskimos. The strong sentiment here & also  by Mack at the time was that there was absolutely no way in the world the Bombers should trade their 2013 first round pick to the Lions for Reilly.

Well, here we are with a starting qb who isn't playing. He's sitting on the bench because CFL defenses are going to blitz the **** out of him to injure him. We know that.... So, he sits to protect him & our backups have no experience.

Maybe (hoping???) Hall shows he is a capable starter. Maybe Goltz shows he can lead the team but right now...right effing now... we don't know how these guys are going to play so in reality we have no one behind Buck. And that precious pick posters here vowed we needed to keep???  Well, our first round pick (Mulamba) is in Green Bay getting ready for training camp down there next month. He may eventually show up here or he may not. The problemn is he's not here now & our qb situation hasn't changed one iota. So, not only is our qb situation just as bleak as it was 6 months ago, we don't even have Mulamba here at training camp.

So, now there's a feeling of despair. Of no hope. Well, Mack should have made that trade. He never should have let Reilly get traded to Edmonton. At least if Reilly was here there'd be a feeling of optimism. That FINALLY this team was on the right track. Instead, what have we got? A repeat of 2012. As a fan, it angers me so much that this team has done eff all to fix the qb situation. When they had a chance to pull the trigger on a trade, Mack sat on his hands worrying more about a CIS prospect  that turns out may never play a down for us than trying to actually fix our qb situation. Fat lot of good keeping our number one pick helped us. #Frustrationleveltotheroof.

Reilly can't even supplant Nichols in Edmonton why do you think he'd have any more success here? Seriously Iso, I know you wanted Reilly in Winnipeg badly but at what point to you stop and admit that yeah, maybe the guy isn't the next great qb... What's the difference between hoping Reilly can be the next guy and hoping Hall can do it? Hall started game in the NFL, that's a damned sight more impressive than anything Reilly has done...

  15. Kind of sounds to me like you're basing the greater percentage of your opinion about Elliott on one game only.

well 2 games most likely. Calgary and Toronto he had issues with the turnovers... and of course he was the qb of note on labour day but I don't put too much stock in that one simply based on how bad the entire team looked. That was a team completely unprepared to play that game, that one goes on the coaches shoulders IMO.

  16.   Because he protects the ball and he can make **** happen when the team needs it most.

can he really? He had as many ints as td passes last season, the season before he had more ints than td passes... I'll say it again, the Buck Pierce we got back in 2010 is long gone, the guy who's there now is a much different player.
