that he did. He protected the ball well when he had to. But 2 first downs in the 2nd quarter, 3 in the 3rd. 4 2 and outs in the 2nd half. Roughly 70-80 yards passing in the 2nd half. We benefited hugely from field position and turn overs.

edit exact stats were 5/10 51 yards in the 2nd half. the 4 2 and outs in the 2nd half. and a bad time count penalty when we were driving the field.

Field position was huge in the first half but the way Nichols was moving the ball then he was having success so his numbers could arguably have been better with a longer field. Not going to complain when we start every drive in opposition territory though.

I will give the O the benefit of the doubt of playing safe to protect the lead but it was a little concerning that they struggled on 1st down so much after having great success in the 1st half on 1st down. Seemed like we tried to stretch the field a lot on first down, which led to 2nd and long a lot.

    Lawless, explained it well.

Willy got all the leeway up to the point of the switch. He is getting pain as the #1 QB and he was coming from an injury. But a move has to be made last game.

And are we so glad that Walters was able to resigned Nicholls?

I have to eat a little crow on this one. In the preseason I thought Nichols was awful, I wanted Davis at #2. Glad I don't get paid to make these decisions.

Oh This is fun... here's my collection:

Doug Brown #97 (97-04 navy blue, press on)
Maurice Kelly #24 (97-04 white, press on)
Barrin Simpson #51 (05-11 navy blue, stitched)
Kyries Hebert #23 (05-11 white, stitched)
Jon Ryan #14 (all gold retro, press on)
Zeke Moreno #19 (navy blue retro, stitched)
Henoc Muamba #10 (12-15 gold, stitched)
Clint Kent #41 (70/80s retro royal blue, stitched)
Jamaal Westerman #55 (modern royal blue, stitched)

I loved me some Mo Kelly.

  4. So as much as we railed on Walters and co. for their poor US scouting and apparent lack of depth on the team during our poor start, based on the last few weeks we maybe have to revisit that idea. Here is the game 1 starting lineup and now the depth behind the starters (in some cases former starters):

    QB: Willy/Nichols
    HB: Harris
    WR: Davis
    WR: Dressler/K. Adams
    SB: Smith/Denmark
    SB: Davis
    SB: D. Adams/Mayo
    WR: Kohlert
    LT: Bryant
    LG: Hardrick/Bond
    C: Goossen
    RG: Chungh
    RT: Neufeld/Hardrick
    DE: Green/Cole
    DE: Westerman/Corney
    DT: Shologan
    DT: Cummings
    WIL: Bass/Wild
    MLB: Wild/Bass/Knox
    SAM: Leggett/Burnett
    CB: J. Adams/Frederick
    CB: Randle/Roberts
    HB: Posey/Fogg
    HB: B. Johnson
    S: M. Harris/Loffler

I included guys like Knox and Burnett due to their work on teams, you could also add guys like Waggoner and D. Jones as well as they were Walters guys as well. Obviously it's only 2 games but based on the supposed issues we had with depth when we were 1-4 I think we need to acknowledge the fact that these depth guys have been integral to our success over the last 2 weeks.

Having Stegall and Roberts at the same time was insane.

For sure. Throw in Gordon, Simon, Bruce, Derick Armstrong was good for a while, then TEdwards. We were spoiled for a while there.

Who knows, maybe Mayo, Davis, Adams could be the next superstar. Although it seems like the NFL is poaching the league now more than ever so we may not see the continuity like before.*

    * I know Stegall and Gordon were shuttling north and south for a while but they were short-lived.

The common theme in all the quarterbacks the Argos have developed is that they have sat and learned for 2-3 years. You dont develop quarterbacks by bringing in new 3rd and 4th guys every year.

This is true, same in Calgary. The benefit is they have an established, proven starter ahead of them to learn from and groom behind. They aren't rushed, save for injury, and when the starter returns the job is his again and the prospect gets relegated back to the backup role.

It's hard to groom a QB for the future when it's a constant carousel at the starter position.

There is also a consistent theme when it comes to teams and the ability to develop a QB - coaching. Calgary has had Huff and Dickenson on staff for what seems like an eternity and same with Barker and Milanovich in Toronto. A new regime wants to bring in their own guys and if we clean house every 2-3 years, chances are any leftover prospects will get flushed along with them.

In his one season with the Bombers Jyles put up 19 Tds and 7 Ints and a 100.9 QB rating in 16 games.  Not sure how many fumbles he had but I do remember one game where the Bombers were deep in opposition territory and a TD would have put the Bombers ahead late in the game.  Jyles proceeded to avoid a sack only to fumble the ball all on his own and the opposition recovered.  That play had a large role in the Bomber loss.

Ultimately, Jyles' numbers that season are perfect example of misleading stats.  So many times, he was in a position to win the game, only failing time and again to put together a late drive for a go-ahead score.

It just like Willy and his 70% completion rate which ultimately doesn't mean diddly when he has been incapable of leading his team on a long TD drive and struggles to consistently put 25+ points on the board and can virtually never put 30+ points.

Yep, that was against Hamilton I believe. Convinced the wife to let me watch in on our honeymoon.

Jyles had a horrible deep ball too. Any deep route along the sidelines and the ball ended up four rows into the stands.

Bauming says that it will be Adams and McDuffie not playing.

Too bad on McDuffie, he's been getting some decent yardage for us this year and it seemed like he was poised to break one soon. That having been said, Fogg has been a more than adequate replacement. Every time I watched Doe returning for Edmonton, I was more and more thankful that he was returning for Edmonton and not for us.

We need to keep our expectations for this game reasonable. Adams and Dressler were not only very good last game, they were in sync with Nichols. Not likely that the newbies will have that same familiarity with Nichols, so our passing game is very apt to suffer. Gotta pound the rock and play the possession game.

Starting 3 rookie receivers and a QB in his 2nd game in the system will put that much more onus on Harris and the O-line dominating the LOS again. That Hamilton front four can get after it too, especially Nevis and Laurent in the interior so Bond, Goossen and Chung need to step up and prevent Harris from being met in the backfield (which prior to last week was the case more often than not).

Yeah you and TB do have differences of opinions that's for sure. But look at it this way - No Nasty Nate around here - which is a blessing I guess - although I do miss him stoking up the fires so to speak. I enjoy this site along with a few others. I have known Colin for a number of years (ever since Total-CFL days) but seldom visit his site. This site is by far the best. Really miss the old Total-CFL days though - lots of top notch posters that have gone on to other sites. And lots of pitched battles back then.!

The biggest problem with Nate was no matter what the topic was he would hijack the thread to beat whatever dead horse topic (usually Lyle) or add his awful nicknames, often making his posts nonsensical and incoherent.

I'll take the current state of MBB over that any day.
