Around the NHL

Catch all thread for discussing other NHL teams/news.

Up first:  Pittsburgh Penguins, my secondary team to cheer for.

I guess their worst start since Sid's rookie year could be because of their lousy defense.  Or bad coaching.  Or Kessel.

But in reality its because I took Fleury in my pool every year for 10 years until last year when I was fed up, he has his best year ever and then I took him this year and now he sucks.

But really, whats the deal?  They might be the first to can their coach.

This is a whole lot of mediocre hockey players swapping places. The only reason it's a big deal is because its Toronto and Ottawa. If this deal happened between Florida and Tampa Bay it would barely be discussed.

Well it's a lot of players and quite a bit of money.

The deal is basically Phaneuf for Michalek. All of the other players involved are playing in the AHL or are prospects. This deal will have very little impact on the NHL level.

Dion Phaneuf personified everything that was wrong with the Leafs. I have no doubts he'll help the Sens as a 3/4 D with no letter, but as the Captain of the Leafs, expected to be the #1 guy, and being paid like it......all kinds of wrong fit.

This is a huge trade...  mainly for the salary dump by the Leafs.

This i agree with. It's a good deal for Dion. He's going to a team that has an established #1 Dman now, so he can play his role and not be expected to be a superstar.

Reality. Cowen makes 3.1 million.  Michalek makes 4 million. Greening makes 2.5

So really.... not much of a salary dump at all .. however Michalek is a ufa to be.

That's basically the deal there. Dion for Cowen Greening Michalek. The rest are AHL players for AHL players

They actually took on more salary (for this year anyways) then they sent out.

Apparently those guys are all done in 1 year, so the money is basically irrelevant to the Leafs. That's what I read on Twitter, anyhow....

They're all up in 2016/17, completely irrelevant to the Leafs concerns.  Phaneuf is signed thru 20/21.

Very little NHL impact??!?   LOL.  Completely changed the face of 2 franchises. And opens the door for the league's biggest spender to bring in some big FAs.

Those guys are going to get flipped also to other teams...  massive salary dump for the Leafs.

I wouldn't say it changed the face of 2 franchises. Sure Dion Phaneuf was the leafs captain, but is he really actually a good hockey player? He's a 3/4 D man at best, but I do like the situation he's going into in Ottawa.

Ottawa basically traded away the corpse of Milan Michalek and a bunch of AHL players and added a mid-tier D-Man, so it doesn't change them a whole lot.

The last part I do agree with - The real value in this trade will be what Toronto does with all their free cap space this summer.

I still don't consider this to be a "Blockbuster" trade like some are calling it though.

It's not a blockbuster. It's basically a cap dump for other cap dumps. RyJo and Jones was a blockbuster

Their version of Tlusty?

Lol. Hudler is 100 x the player Tlusty is

Not sure I understand this trade without TO retaining salary...  strange move by Ottawa, they need D help but this is a killer cap contract

Ottawa is a team that doesn't need to worry about money so much. They are a budget team for sure but... they have a ton of prospects coming and a ton on ELC deals still, actually several of their players are on very good deals. Phaneuf  isn't an awful contract, it's just way 2 long. The cap hit isn't as bad as some thought it would be. He is still a good player, just probably put in the wrong role in toronto.

Leafs needed to dump Phaneufs contract if Stamkos gets to free agency and the Leafs do not get him leaf nation who all ready think that he's theres will go crazy. Leafs took back a guy whose always hurt and guy who was sitting in Ottawa and guy who was in the minors all in all they did what they needed to do and will shed more contracts in the next 20 days. Now why would Stamkos sign in Toronto when they won't be playoff contenders for years simply for money that's it if he wants to win he will stay in Tampa and make a little less money.

Or because he is from Toronto and has always wanted to play for the Leafs.

Leafs will just step into another 'saviour' blunder with Stamkos... make him highest paid player in the league, have nothing left for supporting cast - its their 'thing'

They will have a bunch of guys on ELC deals. However Reilly is RFA

So Price is out for the year now.  How about Ladd & Pavs to Montreal for ???

MTL might be desperate for a goalie to get into the playoffs but I hate making trades with MTL.

The Jets were desperate for a vet goalie too when Pav went down and did not nothing. MTL like WPG might just be riding this out and say blame the year on injuries.
