Post(game)Mortem - Ott edition

First things first....Glad we won and is always what I want/hope for. But that was not a game to give anyone warm fuzzy feelings and hopes of optimism, but here are some of my takes from it

Smith....Let the kid be on the field all the time. He has shown he can be a difference and play maker at SAM and WILL....so let him grow and evolve as he is on fast track to becoming one of the best Canadian Defensive players in the league...period!

We also don't need all of Ayers, Woodbey, Wilson and Jones it's redundant and doesn't really serve a purpose. Jones sure he gets tackles but was exposed over and over in space...losing his angle on tackles and generally doesn't know where to drop back into coverage to disrupt anything. Wilson is not an all-star type anymore, but he serves a purpose and has fewer holes, still will make impact plays and can play multiple LB spots...Jones can't....use that import spot elsewhere

Woodbey is young...athletic...can play several LB spots, as well as a modified Jack...as can Ayers and while Griffen is out a starting unit of Woodbey/Ayers/Smith with Wilson as the swing guy gives us a much better crew...younger...faster..athletic...all versatile and all with upside, and experience already...Griffin back then you go Smith...Ayers/Woodbey....Griffin

Kelly...Hallett...Ball should never...ever be on the field with those 2 safety looks...ever! I guess with Ball looking to be done for the yr we can avoid that now, but that is just ridiculous, not needed for ratio and just makes us a poor defense. Isit the osh wanting to push the Canadiana?...Just ineptness in coaching...Both?...but it's pointless. And while Kramdi wasn't ideal at safety while he is out the Kelly experiment there needs to end....He has shown over 2 seasons now he isn't an answer at that 2 safety look....or at starting safety. We have Stuart who was lights out on teams...actually has HB potential....and size...so there's the guy we should slot in at Safety right now and let him grow there...Likely he becomes a staple there.

We also have the Global Oyelola...get him on the roster...see what he can do...as opposed to rotting on the PR. Relatively young...several yrs in NFL honing his game...he must have some skill to stick for almost 3 yrs...Time for his shot instead of recycling the same end of roster guys in different roles.

If it wasn't proven last night our offense and it's identity flows through BO then all the coaches should be cut loose...Used like Harris circa 2019/2021 and well we saw what can happen...and that's also one of the ways to compensate for a suspect O-line. And start installing progression plays off of it. I also would like to see us implement some packages and extended plays with Perkins...Especilly with some tempo and pre snap motions...we kinda just wastinghis skillset soley as a guy taking the plunge...Would also better set us up in 2027 for TC and having a true battle for #1 with him..Dru and TE...

WR group tho...yikes...worst in league...poorly utilize what we do have and no home run hitter let alone true #1...and that's gotta change fast. If it means bringing in Lewis...or just starting Singer or Womack....or actually go out and find a physical playmaker then do it.

Our group is small...weak...and very one dimensional. If you look at a lot of the incompletions...especially intermediate and long it's because we have no guys who will attack the ball...Demski can a bit and can make some those contested catches with guys all over him, but you shouldn't rely on a receiver built like him for that. Wilson is especially bad and has zero fight at all for the ball...he be ideal #3 as he is shifty and greasy and when gets ball in his hands in space is good at yac and making a 3 yard catch into a 10+ yd one...but he is no #1 by any stretch...Not sure what's up with Nield...can he not get open/separate?...never in right spot but man with him and Cobb out there we basically have 3 guys that are garnering any attention.

Give that spot to Big kev...he is our only physically dominant wr...has great hands...and can do something after the catch...we have seen it...and inside he would be a handful...Is he not getting the reps or that spot because Nield was supposed to be this bigtime FA score?...Wouldnt shock me with Osh...But man we are weak and wont go far in the season let alone playoffs with this crew as it is

Oline not sure what to do there other than like I mentioned create an offense to compensate..lotsa runs...lots slide protections and movement moving the QB's launch point..there's ways to accommodate but treating them and playing them like the lines we had when we won the Cups is not gonna work. And if we gonna run 3 imports on the line...all3 should be top grade beef...all 3 are not and sacrificing a skilled position player on offence for defence for that is just effectively slitting your own throte

Which leads me to my final opinion...based on what we saw in the game again...the leadup...the non urgency to change anything...we wont win or have any Cup aspirations until this team moves away from some coaches

What has Ayers done in his three years to justify keeping him on the roster? Excellent at teams but wrong passport and has never established himself on D. He has 17 tackles in 3 years and 6 in the past 2. Smith had more than that (7) last night. I agree that Smith is an emerging talent.

No truer words have been spoken

Clercius has been injured all season. Probably a good reason for him not playing. I agree that he is a step up from Cobb if he ever gets out of the tub.

Smith was given the start this week, and will carry on there unless Younger is a bone head.

I think it is very clear we do not have the talent for any coach to be successful. Our OL is bottom 3 in the league, our receivers are easily the worst, our D is bottom half talent wise.

Not making excuses for coaches, but this team does not contend without a huge influx of talent. We all saw it last night. This team does not have the horses. Without the DL, ZC and BO putting the team on their back last night we looked just as talented as Ottawa

Blah blah blah this same talent nonsense. There are those of us have been screaming for Smith to start all season.... You see why, gonna pretend it's only because he was less talented?

We have some talent gaps sure, but the roster construction and usage doesn't get the most out of what they DO have.

I wonder if it would make sense to bring in Eugene Lewis and move Wilson inside to Nield's spot and move Nield to field WR.

Last night actually did give me some optimism.

1st, the O was fairly balanced. The use of Brady between running and passing was the best we've seen in a couple years imo. Collaros, finally started taking what the defense was giving them....i get that he wants to go deep more than check down....but whether he likes it or not, hes not that guy anymore. That pass to Cobb should have been an easy 6. Instead it was horribly under thrown. The only thing worse than the throw, was the "attempt" to catch it. Singer cant be inserted fast enough.

The defense, still has huge issues. Particularly in the secondary. Still way too many screwed up assignments. The Dline played well but when recs are given a 10-15 yrd cushion, its an easy pitch and catch.

Like Booch said, how tf are Kelly and ball our best options???

He is tremendous on teams; I mean, really exceptional. If he were turned loose instead of playing disciplined and smart, he could pile up a crazy number of teams tackles.

I had hoped that this would translate to tremendous D play eventually; his skills really pop and they should shine on D. But with limited reps, they haven't. We also gave up on diversifying his skill set. I wish we had continued developing him as a S and a wall wil/nickle db. Though maybe he just didn't take to it. I think he would still be an upgrade at wil/mac. Woodbey, ayers, and smith would be tremendous together.

@booch, I am impressed beyond belief at how well Smith played Sam last night. Holy cow, that kid is more than just a ratio breaker. No matter what we ask of him, he goes out and does it. He picks stuff up at lightning speed and plays the game fast and physical. We should be trying to lock him up to an extension quickly.

Woodbey has that versatility that we haven't had since BA and Biggie were in their primes. He can play at all levels and do it well.

The 2 deep S look is horrible. Idk why we are forcing it soo much. Or why we don't just go with a guy like Smith and an imp. Its a free spot on the bingo card. Kelly is a bit limited, but he has the basic function of most canadian S/DBs in the league. He's the only one who should see any time on D, ever. And even that should be heavily limted.

Smith is not only one of our best linebackers he's one of our best Canadians. Absolutely criminal that he's not a full time starter. We draft all these linebackers and they want to go with a million Americans, we draft 0 receivers and think we can play 3 Canadians there. Make it make sense

The kid has every thing you could ask for. Tangibles and intangibles. If we don't raise him up soon, he will be doing it for some one else before long.

Great write up by booch, I'm gonna add that I love the little bits of development I see from Reese. I liked him dropping back some, and I love how he plays. I think he's playing more reps with too little strategy for this point in his career, but I really look forward to seeing what he can do next year.

The OL needs a shake up as bad, if not worse, then the secondary. I think that is our worst position group by a mile.

Having Reese and Fletcher has really helped the D line. They actually cut Fletcher but that could have been because he was injured.

They both have been pleasant surprises.

Reese u can see is a smart player and has been well coached before getting here...he also never gives up even if he outside the play..and it shows in his play

Ayers prob one top ST guys league wise..on defence for most his use we also misused him..hes not a DE..he would make a great inside LB as he has great sideline to side8ne range..plus people dont understand i dont think how big he actually is..hes a solid 230 and change..perfect for up here

And yeah we better annoint Smith our new Lynch pin on defence and extend him..criminal he has been shackled up this long

@wbbfan like u I was a bit skeptical about at sam..thought his ideal spot was WIL..knew he could play it better than anyone not named Griffin or Woodbey but he absolutely knocked that I outta the park..extend that kid in offseason!!

He should never see a backup rule or any rotation whatsoever again

With him...Woodbey..Reese...Ayers..Gatloouth..Jaworski...I believe in Williams too..Lawson..we have makings of a real solid core of young talent to fasion a defence around..makes me wonder too what Shay would bring if given a chance on defence..hes OK on teams but some guys just light it up in a role on defence..never know unless u give the chance

He was cut to heal...and i was high on him..and he start3d slow ..and i was a bit disappointed...but u can see he has started to play a lot faster and has been making an impact and would be a good rotational piece at worst

There is an immediate fix for the O-line on hand. Put Eli at center, put Vanterpool at left tackle and tell Wallace that if he doesn't smarten up, he will be th next to be replaced. It would be a pity to lose Wallace's potential, but it is coming down to either Wallace's ego or our quarterbacks' survival.

and if we wanna waste a DA like we have been...Use it on Bryant...and have both him and Eli as extra's...tho I will stand firm on my opinion he'd be more than fine st center

Smith is the real deal. Kid is ways making plays and has lightning quick reactions. Glad hes getting more and more involved.

His recognition and burst to the ball is crazy good for a 2nd yr guy

Just imagine where he be at if we had utilized him more last yr..and first half of this yr...he didnt just "get it" last game...he was a prisoner of Osh's way

Smith and Woodbey have the making of a solid 2/3rds of your LB group. Both can also tackle. There’s talent on the team. It’s likely not being used properly but there are also several glaring holes. Nichols is cooked. Moxey is a little bit of chicken fried, even Holm boy seems to have fallen hard, don’t dislike major Williams as a rookie tho.

Kelly at safety is just strange.

Does ceresna do anything? Just wondering. Reese has skill. Willie is the only vet who isn’t showing his age. There’s some talent on D especially. Lots of substitutions tho seemingly causing confusion leading to penalties tho. Thats coaching there.

Moxey is the only db i’d throw away from this group till we fix the coverage scheme.

kelly would be much better in cover 3/4 or our old fangio 6 from a few years ago. Cover 1/2 is only useful very situationally. Virtually none of the ways we’ve been using it, and it’s been our base second down look.

Ceresna had some odd and limited usage. we ran a lot of schmekel.

Hall is much better in front useage. we also need 1 more dt. Even a decent inside out guy.

Your last line... With Osh, things will just get worse. We all know that as he's the one who can't adapt. He's the man running things. Right into the ground.

The last line is my quote. ("With Osh, things will get worse"). I tried to fix it but can't. Sorry Booch.

Smith..woodbey..Griffin would make a top unit... with Ayers as the rotation/swing guy...

I counted ,after watching the game again, 9 completions in a row right out of the gate by a 'suspect' quarterback, Maier, and watched some pitiful coverage on their receivers, making them look like allstars....We have a very large problem in our secondary...and unless that's addressed we will continue to see teams march up and down the field at will....Changes need to be made...Just one obvious problem

True...in all honesty our dline work..most the lb work especially now with healthy Woodbey and Smith finally playing is actually not bad..get...I hope late in yr Griffin back and give tjose 3 the lionshare of reps we are pretty good

That defensive backfield is our Achilles.. our scheme isnt helping but if we used..and or built or roster better and didnt use those excessive cansdians it also help...they just aren't skill wise and body wise good for the role

Also.. with Kelly..Holm..Moxey..we are a bunch of for lack of better description a group of lightweight pansies...no team has any concern running free through our short to intermediate zones..do as they wish..not a concern to keep head on swivel and play tentative..why would they?

And I sure the shoddy tackling is noted and accounted for to just get ball in their hands and likely you gonna get yac

Missing Griffin for sure ....I don't know what the hell happened to Nichols but he isn't the same player we had last year....Major Williams was very promising early...hope he finds his game again
