One of the biggest “what could have been” stories in the CFL that I remember. Joined the Bombers late in 1980 as an underclass man not yet eligible for the NFL and put up decent numbers in 5 games (pro-rated over 18 games would have had over 60 catches and 750 yards with 3 or 4 TDs). Came back in 1981 with a monster season, catching a then-record 15 passes in the season finale to become the first CFLer to catch 100 passes in a single season, when the league only played 16 games a season. man, that Sellers video put to Ludacris is going to outlive us all. Mine and Dave's buddy Chad (former OB.com poster Coorsman) made that video using two VHS decks and God only knows what else rudimentary tech he had access to in the early 00s. Hilarious that it's still going...

That last run where his helmet came off and he still churned out 9 more yards would never happen with the new rules where the play gets blown dead as soon as the helmet comes off. But his smile to the camera after dragging a half dozen Riders down to the 1 elevates this video to legendary status.

Broken neck. Goodlow was in bad shape & took a year for Goodlow to recover. He had one of those gawd awful halos he had to wear. Amazing he actually came back to play.

Dr. Tom Casey, maybe the greatest pure athlete ever to play for the Bombers. An all-star at 4 different positions. 

Fred Reid, the man who replaced no less than Charles Roberts and who holds the single-game rushing record for the club, the highlight of Mike Kelly’s otherwise stupid “Jet package”.

Local Winnipeg Boy Henry Janzen. Played on 4 Grey Cup teams as a punt returner & starting DB. Coached the Bisons to back to back Vanier Cups in 1969 & 70.

Too bad about a quarter of them won't load. There'd be even more. I found some rare Bomber players & can't add them. 

 

His CFL Rookie Card said that Gene Lakusiak was American.  That was incorrect. Lakusiak was born in Rossdale, MB in 1942 but his family moved to Sarnia, Ontario where he grew up. He was a multi sport athlete in high school & was recruited by the University of Tulsa as a fullback & kicker. 

Lakusiak was drafted by the Ottawa Rough Riders in 1967 but played only 2 games for them. He was traded to the Blue Bombers in 1968 & converted to Defensive Back where he played from 1968 to 74. He was a two time Western Conference All Star in 1972 & 73.

After his playing days for the Bombers were over, he taught in the Winnipeg School Division & spent the last 18 years of his career at Tec Voc.  He remained in Winnipeg after his retirement from teaching. He passed away in 2020 at the age of 78.

Grant always said that Lewis could have played for any team down south ...he chose to stay in Winnipeg and the CFL.....He sure gave us some great football
