I'm starting this thread as a side discussion of all things Corona Virus related. I understand that this is going to be discussed in almost all other topic threads but we could collect news and other items here. 

 

At work, many conferences have been cancelled.

NBA - Suspended.

NHL - About to be suspended. 

NCAA March Madness - Playing - no crowd. 

 

Political Rallies have been cancelled. 

Travel bans. 

 

Rita Wilson and Tom Hanks tested positive. They're in Australia where testing is available. If they were in the US, they wouldn't have been tested.

Things are slowly going to open up again very soon, hope it works out better that the last time, anyways we are on the right track and the hospitals are slowly clearing out

Public health officials advise two additional deaths in people with COVID-19 have been reported today, including:

• A male in his 70s from the Winnipeg health region; and
• A female in her 90s from the Winnipeg health region and linked to the outbreak at Southeast Personal Care Home.

The current five-day COVID-19 test positivity rate is 6.7 per cent provincially and 3.6 per cent in Winnipeg. As of 9:30 a.m. today, 110 new cases of the virus have been identified and the total number of lab-confirmed cases in Manitoba to 29,968.

Today’s COVID-19 data shows:

• 39 cases in the Northern health region; 
• 33 cases in Interlake-Eastern health region; 
• seven cases in the Prairie Mountain Health region; 
• five cases in the Southern Health-Santé Sud health region; and 
• 26 cases in the Winnipeg health region.

The data also shows:

• 3,340 active cases and 25,791 individuals who have recovered from COVID-19; 
• there are 109 people in hospital with active COVID-19 as well as 155 people in hospital with COVID-19 who are no longer infectious but continue to require care, for a total of 264 hospitalizations;
• there are 20 people in intensive care units with active COVID-19 as well as 16 people with COVID-19 who are no longer infectious but continue to require critical care for a total of 36 ICU patients; and
• the total number of deaths in people with COVID-19 is 837.

Laboratory testing numbers show 2,183 tests were completed yesterday, bringing the total number of lab tests completed since early February 2020 to 484,302. Case investigations continue and if a public health risk is identified, the public will be notified.

 

Curious about the relatively high numbers in Interlake-Eastman.... is that a communal living (colony) situation, or just randomly high numbers...?

There also is a lot of reserves that are in Interlake-Eastman district that might be contributing to the higher numbers.

100% this. Reserves are being hammered in the interlake.

 

My take on masks:

The idea of wearing masks is somewhat flawed but it’s still there for a reason. You are not protected from COVID by two people ONLY wearing a mask. They just don’t work for that. You have to stay 6 feet apart, wash hands etc..

So why wear masks? It makes people feel safe and it makes people act differently.  There’s a sliver of truth behind every anti-mask idea, but it still doesn’t give anyone the right to act as if they know anything about protecting people and about public health orders.

I think the variants entering Manitoba will be the worst beast for us to deal with. That will not be fun and it will be serious, especially if the vaccination rate is going to keep up.

Puingassi First Nation is in this district and has been struggling this week. A couple other reserve on the East side of Lake Winnipeg as well. 
 

Not making light of the situation at all but it would be much easier to get them the help they needed if they had allowed the road to be built.

None with high case numbers that I'm aware of.  The current situation is either (a or b):

a) the virus has already made its way through a community & they have relative herd immunity

b) the community has gotten better at containing the virus

Masks do more than make people feel safe. There is a lot of evidence for their effectiveness. They are not perfect and close contact is an issue with out without masks, but in a public setting masks definitely help.

Not sure if this has been shared on here before or not but it was circulating at work.  The concept of the Swiss Cheese model.  Masks are one layer of defense.  They alone will not protect someone, but the more layers of defense that are followed, the more someone is protected.

Agreed - as long as people realize that close contact should be avoided, even while wearing a mask.

key words there, at current rate. Rate will pick up as manufacturing picks up and as more vaccines are approved.

A lot of "ifs", but if we here in Canada vaccinate a high percentage of us, herd immunity will ensure that any inbound transmission will likely die out quickly (poor choice of words) or be very localized.
