Did the international kicker get an interview with the papers when he was cut? I'm confident that the club already had their minds made up on our kicking situation, the poor guy never had a chance.

The ONLY reason this is a story is because Yantz is Canadian, and it could have been a feel good story if he made the team.

Sorry, I don't care if our QB is Canadian, American, Mexican or Greek, I just want the best. As the 5th string QB coming into camp, he needed to steal reps away from the others and force the coaches to keep him, which he couldn't do. Best of luck to ya!

It's a story because it sounds like Walters made promises that weren't kept.

I obviously have no idea what was said between Walters and Yantz, but this is a bit of a garbage comment. There is no way Walters promised Yantz anything. GMs don't do that.

He was signed. As a rookie, CIS, 5th QB. Against 4 americans with CFL experience who were returning to the same offence they spent all of last season in. We, as well as every other CFL team, sign an extra arm every season - who is cut every season - and not one word is said. The only reason he even got a quote in the paper is because he's from UofM.

Based on Yantz's quotes, it sounds like Walters promised him an opportunity to compete for a roster spot, and Yantz feels he didn't get that opportunity. Interpret that however you like.

He did get an opportunity, he was on the field. Yantz had to earn anything more, and no, he would't have had much of a chance to do that and yes, the odds were stacked against him. But there is nothing here against Walters, because all he can promise is a number on the guys back, which was provided.

  3. Stanley Bryant has to be #1. I was shocked when that came through the pipe. Damn near spit out my coffee.

At this point, knowing that he will be starting, drafting Chungh should be #2. I think Walters almost talked himself out of it at one point.

Hall deserves a mention as #3. Not because he's a phenomenal coach, but because he should be a stabilizing influence on yet another complete disaster. Hall might just be the end to the last of the gong shows of our football club.

  4. Is there a reason why we've kept two NAT fullbacks (Normand and Lattanzio) on the PR. Seems redundant to me since we are well staffed at FB already and could certainly use a PR spot on another position/player. Neither one could go back to school? Does Lattanzio still have use as a DE?

It's just something to put next to their names on the roster. They are ST players.

    Marve survives...

So do Portis and Yantz. I'd wager $10 million of Yourface's internet dollars that we won't see all 5 QB's play on Friday.

TBurgess will be livid that he and the others who will be further cuts have not been announced yet.

This club has no direction or clue and won't somebody think of the children!

TBurgess is happy that the first round of cuts are finally over so we can use our full resources on those players who'll actually be available for this weeks game.

Keeping in mind there is still two weeks until opening day, and we still need training camp bodies so our roster players don't exhaust themselves before the season begins.

Funny stuff guys.  Completely ignore what I type.  Pretend that I'm anxious and feel entitled.  Then complain about that.  Par for the MBB course.

denial is a horrible thing. You can deny it all you like but you are entitled. You want decisions made on your schedule and if they're not made in accordance with when you want it then you start slagging the decision makers as fools. That my friend is entitlement whether you want to call it that or not.

As for the cuts, biggest surprise to me is west given how much he came along on special teams over the years.

Shows how much you actually read. I don't want all the decisions to be made on my schedule.  I disagree with some of the decisions.  I've never called the decision makers fools.  I don't think I'm entitled,  I think personal decisions can be made in under 5 days.  Most of the cuts were pretty easy to make.  When the Bombers make different choices than I would, I point that out.  When they make decisions that I agree with, I point that out.  It's called having a mind of my own.  Agreeing with everything the Bombers do is called 'Fan Boy', which is a title worn by a group of posters around here who want to 'yell down' everyone who disagrees with anything.

The part I don't understand is why you want the club (or think the club should/could have) made the decisions earlier than any other team. Is it because we played our games earlier than some of the other teams? I don't think the coaching staff should be penalized because of the schedule makers. Training camp is short enough without also losing 5 days worth of practices and meetings to evaluate the players.

The other option, of course, would been to tell the players yesterday morning instead of this morning, so they could make an announcement one day earlier, but why would they do that? They were able to get in an additional day, give every player as much of a chance as they possible could, and were able to take the evening to debate the possibilites. To do so earlier wouldn't be fair to the players in question or the coaching staff.

  7. I disagree. This game was an example of two teams playing undisciplined football imo. And I don't think the 10 yard illegal contact penalty will ruin the game.

No, but a penalty on every other play will absolutely ruin the game. For me, anyway.

  8. This speculation about Marve and the NFL is crazy.

In that Weicek article, much of the extreme terms were not quotes from Marve, but allusions from Weicek. Essentially, he says he wants to play, and if he's still #3 after this year, he may have to look elsewhere to do so. He would love to stay in Winnipeg, but doesn't want to hold the clipboard behind 2 guys for a 3rd straight year. Understandable for anyone who believes they've got the goods.

In the recent quote, he flat-out denies the NFL rumours and says he loves Winnipeg. He basically says the same thing as before -- that he'd love to find a way for him to stay here for a long time. Of course, that "way" would be him as a 2nd string or starter.

Do we honestly want to laud players who are happy being down on the depth chart and don't want to get better and contribute to the team in a meaningful way? Are people suggesting he be cut *this* year because he doesn't want to spend *next* year staying in the #3 QB position?

Continual, late night head shakings going on here. My God!

Nothing wrong with Marve wanting more playing time and to be a starter. But if he's the 3rd QB for the Bombers, which is essentially a developmental position, and you know he's gone next year, then from the Bombers perspective, why spend time developing him, when there's another guy ready to step into that role (Portis), who is committed longer term? It's like in the workplace, why would a business spend effort and resources developing an employee they know will be leaving shortly or an employee who will be retiring in 6 months?

I'm not saying Marve will be cut, but from the Bombers perspective, there is definitely a strong case to cut him, or try to trade him, especially when you have a guy ready to step into that developmental role who is committed longer-term. Now if the Bombers plan on moving on from Brohm next year and they see Marve as the long-term backup, then that could change things from both sides perspectives.

The biggest reason that we won't cut Marve from a developmental position is that the 3rd stringer is essentially not a developmental position. We've (as well as a number of other teams) have gone 3 QBs deep every season in recent memory. He is not here to develop, he is here to help this team when his number is called and he does a better job of that than what we've seen Portis is capable of.

  9. Still think Gibson has a shot to knock off Peach from the starting lineup. I'm not too concerned get about our DL, I trust our two DTs. Add Westerman and we should be better than last year regardless of the fourth guy on the line.

A little disappointing that Gibson was, again, absent from the line up.
Apparently his GF is giving birth.

I realize that. Not saying that he should have made a different decision, it's just getting a little silly already. Hopefully he comes back and there aren't any more delays.

  10. No one should expect that it will look like a regular season game because there will be tons of changes in personal, but folks should expect CFL quality players because that's what every player out there wants to be.

The point of preseason is to find out who can play well with and against CFL calibre talent. A 90% rookie team doesn't tell you anything about playing with CFL quality talent. Assuming Toronto plays their first team guys for less than a quarter, it doesn't tell you much about playing against CFL quality talent either.

I didn't agree with it when we got beat 52-0 in a preseason game a couple of years ago and I don't agree with it now. Hopefully the next preseason game will have most of our starters in for the first quarter or so so we get a look at where were really at this year.

you realize preseason is essentially practice.. and we all know what they say about practice..

I swear, you login to the forum and say to yourself "what can i disagree or argue against today.."

I think everyone gets that preseason is an extended practice. In practice though, the starters get the majority of the reps.

  11. The entire argument is getting confused by people who do not understand the issue.

Sore/Tired is different than being injured.

If he is injured then of course there is no issue with him sitting. But i'm quite sure he is sitting out cause he just needed a day off after all those hard rookie practices. I'm sure for most CIS players the pace of a pro practice is hard for the first month or even season.

Many of these NCAA players have come from much larger programs in NCAA or even NFL and are used to this.

Personally, I'm thrilled that the club is taking such a careful approach with our young draft picks. If Richards is expected to play this season, he'll need to be treated carefully. A 21-year old kid can't be expected to jump into an 18 game season against men from an 8 game season against his peers.

Telling him to 'tough it out' is just asking him to get I jured and throwing away your assets rather than developing him, imo.

Some good players on the outside looking in. Could Lattanzio win a job over Pontbriand? It seems some folks are all over Sherman but I wouldn't be surprised to see Bucknor, Sherman and Jones on the 21. On the other hand, with the new kick rules, it might come down to speed on ST and younger legs so you could be right and we'll see Morgan. Not sure how cap hits are to be balanced but there's a lot of salary chewed up on the O line and an improved Canuck LB corps. Could we see Neufeld on the IR again and Goossen on the 21?

I really don't think Lattanzio is competing to be the starting FB. I think they're looking at him to be used as a FB in certain situations, like Vega lining up as a TE on the odd occasion.

Sure. But they're also looking for impact on ST, especially with the rule changes which will change the kick game substantially. Didn't Walters call Lattanzio "a rolling ball of razor blades?" So what's the point of having a guy like that sitting on the PR?

Exactly. He will be a special teamer who may line up in special packages on Offence. And perhaps serve as an emergency replacement on the DL, which is his true position.

  14. Big dude. Looks like a sam candidate.

I think it's more likely he's here to get a look at CB.

We might be looking at going all import in the secondary. Like MIke said, if this guy's a world beater and makes us sit Buchnor, great. If he's not in that category, he's gone.

  15. Play-offs.

I expect our OL to be settled and to come toegther as a solid unit. Goosen/Chungh pushing for starting jobs, of course, but for us to not be rotating through a new RT every week.

I expect that cohesion to become a more consistant running game and significantly fewer sacks for Drew.

I expect Drew to throw more TDs than INTs.

I expect to have a top 4 Defence that puts pressure on the opposing QB.

I expect a heated argument at the end of the season when discussing our nomination for Most OUtstanding Canadian.

  16.

Here's to Chung and Demski. I hope we land Demski, otherwise I have to spend 3 minutes changing my facebook avvy.

And I hope we take an OL with the number 2 pick, otherwise I have to eat Mike's shorts :o

I wasn't so sure a few weeks ago, but it seems really likely now that we're going OL.

If Mateas goes 1, we pick Chungh at 2, and I'll be fairly happy.

  17. I like the idea of an mbb guy there.. should we start a fundme. or kickstarter. lol

You could probably get the Bombers to match whatever is raised, try to get a bit more publicity to the event.

We had a similar conversation on the other forum and it quickly turned ridiculous, but it would be great having one of our perspectives in there. Someone who would actually pay attention to what's happening on the field instead of looking for a quote or controversy.

  18. Good to see RBs in camp that suit MB's playcalling.  Cdn receiver depth is a concern... especially if we have two starters penciled in for ratio

Between Hurl, Newman, Briggs, even Sherman, should have someone that can play WIL

Really looking like we need to go Demski or Waud at #2

I agree with all of this. We seem to have a NI LB spot locked up. I'm not too worried about the MLB, I think Richie Hall can find one he likes in one of these FA camps we've been having. I'm wondering what the SAM spot is looking like this year, is it going to be a glorified DB? Or are we totally converting the LBing core to something more traditional?

There should be a good RB competition. I'm sure we'll see a couple of them throughout the season.

It looks like we have found an edge rusher in Derrell Johnson, I have high hopes. If we can stay relatively healthy along the DLine, should be a huge improvement over last season.

I am honestly most worried about our receiving core. I was pumped about the Nic Moore signing last year and I hope he can finally live up to that promise. I definitely wouldn't mind Walters taking a hard look at Demski, and I really hope there were some good finds at the position in mini-camp. We need to surround Willy with all the talent we can.
