Blue Bombers - 2023 Regular Season - Discussion Thread

I seem to recall the early transition to Kona at Center last season after Couture was injured did not go super smoothly and reflected badly on Neufeld in particular, there was an increase in O-line breakdowns and Zach paid the price in a number of games. Comparing this year to last may not give a clear picture of the worsening protection over time we suspect has happened. DT may have to go back to 2021 stats. to get a better comparison of deteriorating protection. -

Ti-Cats basically gave Davis to the Stamps, sixth-round pick in the 2024 CFL Draft. Vaughters may be out for the season so the Stamps had a big hole to fill. Semi-pleased Walters isn't interested in old has-beens. -
Rewatch the 2nd down play in OT against Ottawa, critical breakdown between Kona and Neufeld led to Zach getting sacked and put the game on the line.

People might not want to acknowledge the level of difficulty cutting a 3 in 1 Natl. kicker caused the team in roster management, there may be measurable benefits down the road, but the cost of replacing him and the lost ratio flexibility he allowed has become a real inconvenience. As much as I wasn't Leggs biggest fan, I don't think it's been worth the tradeoff. -

Yep, Zach leans towards gunslinger so he gets hit more often than Nichols, who was content to pick up first downs until they reached the 45. Even before 2019 Nichols was boasting of "not touched" games and they had a number of them. -
Judge spying Crum seemed to keep him contained in the second half, that's a good start.

I don't think Jones let Willy get away, he left Sask. for the NFL and O'Day fumbled the handoff. -

Prukop performed very well for most of last season, yet nobody was thrilled when he initially signed and he's not going to sell any additional tickets. Piggy lifted people out of their seats the first time he touched the ball, that much is frickin' obvious. Colonel Tom wasn't no dummy. -

Walters announced during the off-season the 3rd QB would not be competing with Brown for the 2nd position but would be given a "Strev. like package" to work with. 7 games gone and we've seen none of that package yet, which could be helpful diversifying the offence. -

Not that O'Shea would ever answer that question with anything less obscure. -
Microplastics are an example of a relatively new technology that needs to be banned immediately before it causes irreparable harm.

He probably has a better chance of catching on as a 3rd stringer than MBT. -

I hoped they would go after Boteng last off-season but he just announced his retirement. Sounds like several teams were still interested in him. https://3downnation.com/2023/07/20/canadian-de-kwaku-boateng-retires-from-cfl-despite-interest-from-teams/ -
Eli looks to have shed 50 lbs. of belly fat from when he was here in 2021, looking a bit frail compared to some.

Apparently Gray was not feeling well yesterday, which makes sense considering how late they made the switch. Concerned about Stanley, maybe he's nicked up and needs a few weeks to recover but he isn't handling speed so well these days and if targeted in a playoff game by a quick DE like Betts it could get ugly for Zach. The next game against BC should be a very good test of the O-line to identify deficiencies. I think they need to have a backup plan ready to roll in-game to relieve him if he's struggling and that might have to be Gray if there's no way possible to get Richmond onto the roster directly.

Entertaining game, good to see the Elks play marginally better.
-
I don't know about that, Gray and Neufeld always seems to be the first ones downfield when the running game is working well. If anything I think his pass protection suffers with his high center of gravity.
-
Cody Speller, there's a guy that could still be playing football if he wanted to.
-
I think Neufeld missed some games in 2021 and Eli filled in.

I don't honestly care where Exume plays but as a Natl. who is athletic and has a nose for the ball he has the potential to be a ratio changer. I think he's worth developing and shouldn't expect to waste his entire career chasing down punts like Derek Jones did.
-
In his presser yesterday, O'Shea mentioned Briggs as the primary backup to Mauro. I'm really hoping they can do more with Exume this time around, especially as they can't count on Ford coming back anytime soon. He's crazy athletic and has good size, no reason he couldn't be further developed as a WIL or a SAM with guidance from Bighill, unless he has really low football IQ.
-
I suspect Jackson may take some reps. he played a bit of DE in College.

B.A. has lost a step, he didn't come into the league as a heavy hitter but much like Mo Leggett he's moved in that direction, I would prefer he focus more on coverage and good tackling and less on punishment. I think Holm could become an excellent Safety eventually, he has the mobility and speed to cover the field well but doesn't carry a very big stick. The Als Dequoy can do it all and looks to be the best Safety in the league right now.

Jones is a rebel! Bombers figured this out 4 years ago but somehow forgot how well it works.
