Drew Willy Watch 2.0
Phew. Glad Willy isn't seriously injured. If Brohm starts and struggles like he did in his last 2 relief appearances, I expect the booing to rival that of Alex Brink's inaugural start back in 2010.

The Winnipeg old boys club.
The hiring policies of this organization, over the past few decades can be viewed with a rightful degree of skepticism. 1996 - Winnipeg Blue Bombers board decides to relieve curmudgeon Coach and GM, Cal Murphy in favour of the sexy, hip young coach on the harley resulting in two of the worst seasons in Bomber history. 1999 - boards hired Lyle Bauer as GM and CEO. While Bauer does some good things like bringing the Bombers debt levels to manageable levels and increase season ticket levels and corporate sponsorships to a respecatable amount, he inserted himself into the decision-making process of recently promoted GM Brendan Taman in 2004 ordering him to fire Dave Ritchie. He followed this up in 2008, ordering the firing of Doug Berry in favor of his buddy Mike Kelly, leading to the disastrous 2009 season in which Kelly traded away half the Bombers' upcoming draft picks and alienated the fan base resulting in the lowest crowds seen since the late 90s. Oh, and the team missed the playoffs as well followed by Kelly's arrest and ultimate firing. Bauer leaves for the greener pastures of Calgary around this time. 2010 - In its infinite wisdom, the Bomber board decides to hire a former director of player personal, Joe Mack, who hasn't been seen in these parts, or any other CFL city in 22 years. A curious hire, Mack fails to deliver on his promise of delivering the franchise a long-term solution at QB relying on broken-down Buck Pierce to lead the team during his entire 4-year tenure. Canadian drafting leads to mixed results, recruiting from the US is adequate, but free agency proves to be his greatest downfall as he fails to significantly upgrade areas of significant weakness, O-line and QB. Needless to say he proves to be a terrible team builder leading the team to 4-14, 10-8, 6-12 and 3-15 team seasons. His hirings for the head coach position are highly questionable, most notably the disasterous 1.5 year reign of Tim Burke. 2012- The hiring of Garth Buchko as CEO who lasted all of a year and will forever be known as the man who guaranteed the Bombers would be playing at Investors Group Field in 2012. Another curious hiring of an individual who appears to have been unqualified for the job. It appears that being the director of a radio station that broadcast Bomber games was good enough for the suits on top. 2013 - Bombers bring in failed special teams coach, Kyle Walters, acting as interim general manager in the wake of the Joe Mack firing, with assurances from up top that the Bombers will extensively search for a GM come the off-season. Sure enough, in the off season, after this "extensive search" Kyle Walter is hired. His near 2-year reign as GM has been a mixed bag - high-priced free agent acquisitions Nick Moore and Korey Banks failed to impress(first year) or were MIA while Stanley Bryant has seen middling results. Trades for the likes of Chris Randle and Dominic Picard have improved the Bombers at those respective positions on the field. While Walters should be commended for doing what his predecessor failed to do, sign a young up-and-coming QB in Drew Willy, there was really no other options for both the GM and the QB for the starter's spot. All other teams had their Qb positions filled with Burris and Collaros having rebuked the young GM in favour of teams elsewhere. The big concern with this GM is his inability to recruit replacement players from colleges and the NFL down south, most noticeably at linebacker and the defensive line. Will add something about Miller tomorrow....

The Positive Thread
Positive from this poster is that I missed the game for the Fringe Festival. I won't bother watching this nightmare on replay.

Positives?
The Offense had 5 two and outs and 2 more three and outs. That's "not barely" as you would put it. The offense generated little after the first 10 minutes of the game. Cotton didn't touch the ball much in the second half due to poor gains on his three or four touches. In fact, Cotton had two gains over 5 yards. Tough to generate a running game with that kind of production. Bombers had 27 passes and 17 rushes. That's the typical ratio for a CFL game.

Suggestions for us old timers... and thoughts on long term
We haven't had a great GM since Cal. Early results with Walters suggests he is average...but it's early. Recruiting from down south has left something to be desired.
-
Positives?
I expect a Bomber victory next week. Esks arguably have the worst O-Line in the league and the worst starting QB in the west. No reason our D can't limit them to < 20 points. That's a positive.
-
Special teams was atrocious
Our field goal kicker is fine inside the 45. It's the point after converts where he is shaky.
-
Positives?
Losing a game, albeit close but still losing, is exorcising a demon? Hmmmmm, ok.

Bombers give Stamps a gift..
Could be. We may have a better idea by the end of the season. The last minute of the game felt Lapo-like. Could be. We may have a better idea by the end of the season. The last minute of the game felt Lapo-like.We've had too many LaPolice/Rheinbold/Burke moments of late and the scary thing is that Willy sure as spit looks like he is regressing. How does he look like he's regressing? Lmfao. Calgary has one of the best pass defences in the league.. He did rather well did he not?The things people chose to try and claim around here at times..When Willy's game deserted him last year, his biggest failing was his inability to handle blitzes and folding in crunch time. That's pretty much what happened tonight. Uh. I saw him handle the blitz really well up til the last play of the game with the int. not sure what game you were watching. He either tossed it away or dumped it off for small gains.. He also made some great throws in the face of it too. Great retort. Willy was fine until he threw a game killing interception... or didnt call time out on a drive killing penalty. You either have it in the clutch or you dont. Right now, Willy is not a clutch guy. When the pressure is on he gets worse. That's just fact. Will it improve, God I hope so. It's his 2nd year as a starter but hes' going to be 29 in November. He's actually past his prime in football years. Or entering the final stages of it. Let's not exagerate here. Many quarterbacks do not enter their prime years until there early to mid-30s especially those who haven't had a chance to start on a regular basis until their late twenties. See Anthony Calvillo, Danny McManus, Henry Burris. Superstar QBs in the NFL have had their best years in their 30s as well ie. Manning, Brady, Roethlisberger, Brees

I think we Bomber fans became a little overly excited with Willy the comeback kid after the 5-1 start last year. Since then, I think he has one fourth quarter comeback (against Sasky) and mostly pedestrian efforts marked by indecisiveness and questionable decision-making. People love to rag on Glenn for ill-timed interceptions but it's more than apparent Willy has thrown his fair share or poorly timed INTs as well. See today's game for the latest evidence.

Positives?
Yup. We were right there. Even after the gaffe on field goal we STILL had a chance to get it in range but that INT broke the camels back. We were right there. That was only the last of a whole series of screwups and not-good-enoughs which started after the first quarter. If it was one or two things, it would be easily fixable, but this edition is lacking in so many areas that this season to get back on track is not likely to be enough. I think the Bombers are fortunate in that several other teams are dealing with injuries to their starters both on offense (all those long term injuries to quarterbacks!) and on defense whereas the Bombers are healthy. There sure aren't any excuses for the Bombers to not get the minimum 8 wins for a playoff spot.

Positives?
They hung with the champs until the very end.

Bombers give Stamps a gift..
Overall I thought Willy handled the Stamps defense reasonably well, but would it kill him and/or Marcelle to try some intermediate passes in the 15-25 yard range? If you rely on nothing but 5 - 10 yard passes to drive down the field odds are you will inevitably make a mistake resulting in a turnover, punt or field goal attempt. The hallmark of a Beuillfeuille offense - short passing plays interspersed with a couple long bomb completions, nothing in-between.

58 yard field goals do not go through the endzone.

Yup. I concur. We were thisclose to winning this game. Easily within our grasp. We did ourselves in more so then Calgary bested us. It's not as easy as you think. The Bombers have been losing the turnover battle for 5 of the past 6 seasons and 7 of the last 8. Teams with below average talent and coaching tend to turn over the ball more. Season is young but right now the Bombers are in the negative for turnovers.

Bombers give Stamps a gift..
At what point does glacier-like speed of improvement become no longer acceptable when several other teams have proven that you can turn a crappy team into a Grey Cup contender in two years? Why can't we be a Grey Cup contender this year? We are 500 with both of our losses coming to the teams that were in the Grey Cup last year. The first loss with our starting QB out and this loss by a single point with 4 turnovers. It's so early in the year but it feels like people have already had enough of this regime Might stem from the fact that the Bombers are playing their "best" lineup with no injuries..unless there are some players on the practice roster that are better (new MLB please) while the Stamps are without several key players including 2 OL. A healthy Stamps team might crush the Bombers by 3 or more TDs...kinda like the Ticats did.

Bombers give Stamps a gift..
Because it happened at the most crucial time of the game. Also, Why not go for it on third down, even if you need 11 yards. Higher percentage of success than a 58 yard field goal (probably 10% chance of success)

Bombers give Stamps a gift..
The lack of talent found from down south for our front 7 the last two off seasons has been pathetic.

The Daily Early Game Day Thread - WPG @ CAL
O'shea reminding me of Lapolice more everyday. The time count violation and then a ridiculous decision to go for a 58 yard field goal instead of gambling on third down which stands a greater chance of success.

Attendance
I noticed for the upcoming BC game there are seats in certain sections of the north and south endzone priced at $23.50 (1 youth and 1 adult) which includes the service fees. It's a Salisbury House offer that requires a code. Half price seats. Good to see the club forming a partnership with Sals to provide a low price alternative for families for those tough-to-sell seats.

It's time for the Riders to start sucking ...
Isn't that pretty much normal in Regina? Haha, well I certainly don't believe that second story. No way the friend went to bed with his sister "by accident."

It's time for the Riders to start sucking ...
Not really related to the Riders sucking but.... Quotes from one of the Riderfan forum members in regards to Craven Country Music Festival -Funniest thing I ever heard was some drunk dude and chick hooking up one night out there, then realizing the next night they were distant cousins... -friend of mine went to bed with his sister by accident back in 2009.

CFL Week 2 Other Games - CGY at MTL / BC at OTT / TOR at SSK
Throws three TDs after the INT and fails to perform in the clutch. Interesting.... The defense failed to perform in the clutch. How many high pressure games has he won? How many championship rings has he earned? All the stats in the world .. but can't come through when the chips are down. Depends what you mean by high pressure. He was one 5 playoff games and I remember him beating the Bombers in the final game of the 2009 season that secured 2nd spot in the East for Hamilton and eliminated Winnipeg from the playoffs. He has the same number of championship rings as Dieter Brock, Milt Stegall, Juron Bolden and Charles Roberts (who played a big role in the Bombers losing the 2006 East Semi-final and 2007 Grey Cup by the way). Glenn came through this weekend with 3 Tds after the INT. The defense did not come through when the chips were down. Honestly it's funny when I read any gameday threads with Kevin Glenn playing for team x over the last several years. Regardless of when he throws an INT - first, second, third or fourth quarter - he somehow fails to perform in the clutch and cost his team the game. When most other QBs throw an INT it is glossed over. Newsflash: Glenn has won games in which he has thrown an INT. I know it's hard to believe but he has. But never, it seems, the ones that matter most. I just said he won 5 playoff games. Are you saying those don't matter most?
