Congrats to Goltz even with the loss.
A young guy, 3rd game, in that madhouse of a stadium and he mostly functioned well.
The warts are slowly falling off.
This is what most of us were saying...gotta let the young guys get reps and play to develop.
Some of the things Justin did in that game...Buck just can't do. (except the ints-Buck can handle those)

What Goltz needs is help from his defence.
Instead of starting the game in the hole, it would be nice to see plenty of stopped Sask drives where Goltz can get more touches in better field position.
You know, kinda like a regular team.
I don't care that they have stars, every team has stars. It's how you approach stopping them that matters.
Instead of teams facing our D and knowing exactly what we're doing, I want to see some confusion when facing us for a change.
Isn't this supposed to be Burke's strong suit?

A good defensive showing will go a long ways in keeping Goltz going, IMO.

Wut?  How can you equate throwing in practice with throwing in a game?  You could be a dead on accurate passer in practice, but when the game starts and you don't have experience in shutting out the noise, taunting from the other team, the butterflies in your stomach, the thought that everyone in the stadium wants to rip your head off if you lose, etc... not to mention once you say hut you have at least 4-8 monstrous guys running straight for you wanting to smash you into the turf.  Yeah I'm thinking you get a bit more jittery when you're playing live, which means your going to make mistakes and your accuracy is going to be off.

And yes...playing in live games will make you more accurate.  Any experience will normally make you better unless you've reached your peak.

So in Burke terms, a guy who caught a couple passes in training camp.

Who cares about all this, anyway? Honestly, can anyone know that Goltz or Hall can't put up Reilly-like numbers in their 9th CFL start?

Maybe if Hall plays the rest of the year and is still putting up 200-yard games, we should return to this argument. But we're still not talking about a Ricky Ray or Henry Burris. We're talking about MIKE FRICKIN' REILLY -- a QB who is just now starting to find his groove as a CFL QB.

(And in this city, especially with the coaching we have -- which we would've had if Mack had somehow, miraculously brought Reilly to Winnipeg -- Reilly would've probably been replaced at starting QB putting up the numbers he did in his first 5 games in Edmonton. Because we don't give our QBs time to grow anymore. We release them or swap them out after a few mediocre games.)

I'm suggesting that it was, at the very least, defensible. And I would argue that he did take chances at the QB spot. He signed Steven Jyles and Buck Pierce in free agency, and brought in 9 QBs during his tenure. And if putting all of your eggs in the Buck Pierce basket when your job is on the line isn't taking a risk, I don't know what is. You can fault him for his decision making, but he certainly was not a guy who "never took a chance".

The one point about Mack I will bring up is this: he may have already found a solution to the QB problem. It may have been either Elliott or Brink, it could have possibly been Buck, it may yet be Goltz or Hall. But as long as you have an offensive line where not one player on the line is a top-3 player at his position, and the best IMPORT RIGHT TACKLE you can find is Shannon Effing Boatman, it doesn't matter how many free agent quarterbacks you do or don't trade for.

I don't think it's that ISO.  I'm not a Joe Mack supporter but I think he made the right move.  Reilly wanted Edmonton and Mack stated the facts.  Even if we got him, he'd have big leverage and could leave anyway.  It would have been stupid for him to even try to go after him.  Now Glenn on the other hand...that's another story.

In any case Blitzmore is right...we're just beating a dead horse here.  We don't have Reilly or Glenn, so there's no point arguing over why they aren't here.  The question is, what can we do now.

The lack of practice reps has been though.

When you consider how Pierce dominates reps throughout the week in preparation for a game .. only to get hurt .. then the backups are being thrown into the fire without adequate preparation .. how can you expect anyone to excel?   As a backup, in that situation, you don't get a chance to develop chemistry with your receiver and you don't get the bulk of the practice reps as packages are implemented for that week - especially when Buck's availability is still in question and he's still sucking down reps in the off chance he can go.    Not exactly a recipe for success.

I'm just going to point out something that seems completely logical to me, but it seems to get missed a lot when discussing the whole Reilly thing.

Reilly was a pending free agent who was known to have two teams interested in him (Winnipeg and Edmonton)
If Reilly had waited to hit free agency, his earning potential would have increased because of the potential for a bidding war.
Wally Buono opted to open trade discussions with both teams that were interested in Reilly, but only allowed Edmonton the luxury of being allowed to talk to Reilly BEFORE a trade was made.
Reilly opted to sign a contract prior to free agency and chose not to capitalize on the ability to earn more money on the open market.

Am I the only person here who sees how ******* obvious it is that Reilly did not want to come to Winnipeg?

Wally knew it. He didn't let Winnipeg talk to Reilly because Reilly would have told them he wasn't interested. Which in turn hampers his ability to use them as a negotiating tool in trade talks with Hervey. He let Edmonton talk to Reilly because getting them to ink a deal prior increases the return he could get from Hervey.

It's not rocket surgery here folks.

But I'm starting to get a bit annoyed with your defense of Buck.

"Just because" is not a good enough reason. I'd love to actually see you explain your opinion and back it up with something substantial other than you think it's a bad move because you have a personal favorite based upon, well ... what kind of appears to be nothing. You keep saying "Buck is better" .. prove it?

It still accomplishes nothing for the future of this franchise.

Let's be honest here, one or two wins from Buck in the interim isn't going to do anything but give our boneheaded management a false sense of direction and hope leading into 2014.

But Lapo was not a bad coach. He was a rookie sure and a little high strung, but he certainly wasn't a dud.

I think had Mack found him better players (esp at QB), made some decent trades, and didn't meddle with the roster, Lapo's teams would've performed a lot better.

Didn't the original rumours say Mack was forcing LaPo to hire an OC and give up play calling and then after Crowton struggled it morphed into Mack forced Lapo to hire Crowton.
In other words it was the brother of a woman who lives next door to the sister of a roofer who worked on Crowton's neighbour's house.
Your wife wouldn't happen to be named Carrie, would she?
