Pocket passing QB is so yesterday
voodoochylde replied to Doublezero's topic in Blue Bomber Discussion
And yet, of all active quarterbacks, Willy has third most yards rushing, is third in average yards per rush and has the third longest run of any QB in the league this season .. There's a difference between a 'pocket passer' and a guy who looks to pass first and run second .. Willy can and does extend plays with his legs. He's done it time and again over the season and a half he's been our starter. -

In this case, it's Wiececk's verbage and not a quote from O'Shea himself. -

Don't normally post this type of stuff .. but honestly .. if I have to sit through another Brohm **** show I am going to be less than impressed with O'Shea and the coaching staff.

Any time our backs get going East West .. the play is over. The only time we have really had success running the ball is when the back has been decisive, plants his foot in the ground and gets up field as soon as he sees a seam. Part of me wants to say that we've faced some exceptional defensive lines so far in Montreal, Edmonton and Hamilton .. but the realist in me says that it's not going to get any easier and that the interior of our offensive line needs to be better. There are games where Greaves has played on his backside .. Picard runs the gamut from nasty to negligent .. and Chung, while a physical mauler, will still go through growing pains as a rookie. All that said, none of our running backs are going to be successful if they are constantly being met in the backfield .. but I *DO* agree .. Marshall has looked most impressive so far.

So the loss is on Brohm? Get real. Willy has yet to score a TD vs Esks in three starts. You're not wrong about what Willy has done against Edmonton, but what do two previous games have to do with Saturday? You sure have a strange desire to go out of your way to hate on Drew Willy. I don't get why folks are blaming Brohm for the loss. That makes no sense. Willy's numbers were hardly any better through 2/3 of the game. Willy was like 7 for 17 and 81 yards. Every time Willy loses it seems like he can do no wrong. He's always aabove criticism. I don't hate Drew Willy. I'd like to see him do well. But we've given him every opportunity through more than 20 games ... and maybe it's time to admit he's just not the second coming everyone thinks he is. who is calling him the second coming? If you can't see he's the best qb the bombers have had in a while, you might need to take a CFL 101 course or something. When not being hit like a rag doll he's putting his team in a position to win almost every game. Does he make mistakes? Of course, he's a 2nd year starter playing with a fairly weak team and a horrible OC. Drew willy is by far the bombers best chance to win right now. There is no debate on that. An offensive coordinator who made a Hall of Fame quarterback look washed up while operating under his system .. Calvillo took beating after beating while MB was in Montreal .. people were saying he was done .. long story short the Als dumped Bellefeuille and Calvillo went on to throw for 4600+ yards in each of the next 5 seasons.

I think SPuDS is talking about the mercurial nature of Bomber fans .. one week they are high as a kite after a win .. team can do no wrong .. offense, defense and special teams look amazing (regardless as to how they actually played) .. the next, after a loss, we want to fire everyone and burn the whole thing to the ground. There are few people who see the middle ground.

Sewell is a bit of a beast .. smart player as well .. Jones won't tolerate guys who allow teams to extend drives by taking stupid penalties .. granted Edmonton has that luxury having an incredibly deep d-line. -

If our defensive line wasn't able to 'raise hell' against a Calgary team that was playing on a short week .. that was three linemen down going into the game .. and lost two more (though Lavertu DID come back and play it out) during the game .. I'm not going to count on ANYTHING happening against Edmonton (no matter how bad their line is). -

I was wondering when the yearly soft tissue injury would rear its head .. raw deal for Watson as I truly love his playstyle .. his body is just letting him down though. -
Nothing wrong with it if that is what entertains you. Lots wrong with it if it doesn't. For those who dislike it, it smacked of arrogance, with players who were more about themselves than the team, and spent time telling people how great they were because it wasn't evident enough on its own merit. And I get the whole "it ain't bragging if you can back it up" concept, but if you are that good, your play will speak for you, not your proclamations. They were good, but the West-Battle-Jones-Brown era never had to brag because everyone feared them on their reputation of performance alone, and no one needed to be told how good they were, because everyone knew it just by watching them. They didn't have to convince anyone (maybe themselves?) with hot air. Plus, that arrogance comes with a healthy dose of humble pie and comeuppance when you lose (like touting an interception you made when losing 35-0 in Edmonton, right Jovon?), and that comeuppance can attach itself beyond the players to the fanbase. To each their own, I guess. Neither approach is right or wrong objectively, just a personal preference about how you like your professional athletes to act. I'd prefer my team spend time in practice working on fine-tuning football drills rather than choreographing TD and sack dances. And yet they did back it up .. that defense single-handedly won games for this team. That defense single handedly kept us in games when TOP was heavily in the opposition's favour .. when our offense went 2 and out time and time again. . Comparing those guys to West .. Battle .. Jones (in terms of how they carried themselves) is comparing apples to oranges .. it was a different era of football .. but those guys also played with attitude .. and swagger. I have slowly come to realize that a great many people who disliked (resented?) "Swaggerville" are simply upset about how the team (the whole organization for that matter) simply imploded. These individuals are using a very visible, vocal part of those teams as a focal point for their disappointment. Others simply have an 'old school mindset' and cannot (will not?) recognize the changing times. I for one will never begrudge those guys their celebrations and antics when they were often on the field for 2/3 a game. As you say .. to each their own.
-
"Swaggerville" was simply the attitude, chemistry and mindset of that particular defense given a name. That's all. I'm not sure why so many people vilify that idea. Those guys played hungry. Those guys had fun. Those guys played for each other. And yes, those guys celebrated. Hell, they made a lot of clutch plays that won us games we had no business being in. So I'd ask, what the hell is wrong with that? This whole notion of 'acting like you've been there before' is so incredibly dated .. these guys play a game for a living .. it's supposed to be fun .. it's supposed to be entertaining for us fans .. and a great many fans WERE entertained by "Swaggerville".

Bombers Practice -- Injury Updates
voodoochylde replied to Noeller's topic in Blue Bomber Discussion
In the OP it said Picard was sick today.Yes I know. Your point? It's not surprising that with Picard sick they would need another guy snapping the ball and that Neufeld would be that guy. What's with your snarky comments lately Jacquie? I was just stating a fact, that Neufeld was playing centre in practice. It's a notable development, even if Picard was sick. yep, Jacquie is the one being "snarky" I, for one, think it's notable considering how Goosen is waiting in the wings .. -

Political discussion moved to General .. happy posting boys! -
There's a reason he's the second highest rated quarterback in the league so far this year (119.6 - trailing only Harris who sits at 121.5) - he's playing smart football. And, to be fair, Willy was playing like this last year as well (before he got hurt) .. he's only going to get better the more he plays.

Odds of success are probably less than 50% I would think. On TSN they said the 2 point conversion was running around I believe 77 percent. Teams are hesitant to go for two but I think once we start seeing more success with the two point conversion and 1 point converts missed. (hello Winnipeg) we'll start to see a shift in mind set when it comes to going for two. When more teams start doing it that % will probably go down. 77% doesn't seem like a sustainable rate. Actually, I think what they said during the game was that 1pt attempts were being coverted at a rate of 78% .. Through four weeks the stats are as follows: 1 point attempts: 48 / 60 for an 80% conversion rate. 2 point attempts: 15/22 for a 68.2% conversion rate.

That defensive line though ...

We should add 'killshot' somewhere in there Every time he says "kill shot" .. finish your drink.

Ottawa got hosed on that last roughing the passer. If that's a penalty ...

Would love to see Ottawa take this tonight but that offence isn't helping matters.

The Daily Early Game Day Thread - WPG @ CAL
voodoochylde replied to voodoochylde's topic in Blue Bomber Discussion
First and foremost, I hope that they don't allow Cornish to get on a roll. If the Stamps get him going early it's going to be a long day in Calgary. I'm hoping that either one of Harlan or Collins can be that anchor on the defensive line, a guy that commands double teams and allows our inside backer to flow freely (I don't find Hurl gets off / defends blocks particularly well and he's not a guy who can afford to lose a step). I won't be surprised if you see Hall testing that offensive line early .. With respect to our offense .. I'm hoping the interior three play a better game .. especially Greaves (95 from MTL put him on his back more than once last game).
