The flu question is bewildering - the more you look at data, the more I wonder why we don't do more
Covid is a higher death rate but disproportionately affects 50 and older - mostly 70+... anyone who says different is not looking at the stats - I totally agree that we are saving lives now at the expense of deaths when Gen X needs senior care - we will have no money, massive debt and no tax base...
I also agree that this lockdown is a panic response and herd immunity - far better to test and isolate those in danger but I don't think we have a choice...  if anything this highlights how the Boomers have overwhelmed our health care systems already and how we are on a razor thin margin of error
I think we are flattening the curve just to buy time - and that's not a bad thing
We are fighting the unknowns right now with this lockdown - I think next winter, Covid hits again and we respond the same as we do with the flu...

Anti-vax posts have been removed - start an anti - vax thread if need be - but keep them out of the COVID 19 thread.
    Rants have also been removed.
This has been a valuable thread that is needlessly evolving into anti-vax rhetoric.
Do not private message me - my explanation is clear.

BTW, before you run off to get your next flu shot, you might want to read this article on the hazards and effectiveness of the flu shot before you make up your mind.

I'm not against those measures. I'm wondering why those same measures weren't taken against a pathogen that is killing at a 29:1 ratio. The argument I got is that we have the flu shot.

You can't deny that your argument in support of brushing aside 29 flu deaths in light of 1 covid-19 death was that there is the flu shot but no vaccine against covid-19 so we're more vulnerable to it. Sorry, but that makes no sense. It might make sense if the death counts were reversed but for now at least that is not the case.

Your logic is that we brush aside 29 flu deaths to 1 coronavirus death because some people get the flu shot? I can do without that logic.
Do you realise how ridiculous what you just said is?
We currently have a 29:1 death ratio, almost exactly the same 29:1 death ratio that we are seeing in Ontario and I expect across the country and maybe the world and for that we are going to:
collapse the world economy the cost of which will be "at least $1 trillion and possibly $2 trillion world-wide" plunge the world into recession/depression cause world wide supply shortages cause world wide panic buying force the layoff of hundreds of millions of workers world wide cause extreme poverty world wide cause world wide stress, anxiety, depression, suicide cause world wide violence, rioting, theft, looting put troops in the streets world wide and our part in it will be to stand idly by and: (courtesy Health Canada)
stay at home unless you have to go to work talk to your employer about working at home if possible avoid all non-essential trips in your community do not gather in groups limit contact with people at higher risk, such as older adults and those in poor health go outside to exercise but stay close to home if you leave your home, always keep a distance of at least 2 arms lengths (approximately 2 metres) from others, and household contacts (people you live with) do not need to distance from each other unless they are sick or have travelled in the last 14 days All this for a death rate that is 1/29th that of the flu. Yes I realise that may change as the flu season ends but talk about a fail at logic.
Even if the coronavirus death toll soars to 30 times what it is now we will only just have reached that of the flu. A flu we were happy to live with before destroying the world we knew over coronavirus.

The only province I didn't enjoy living in more than Alberta was Saskatchewan and that ain't saying much. Alberta has more than it's fair share of arrogant, redneck ******* cowboys. Maybe that factors into it a little bit. If you truly want to know what people think of Alberta, and I don't for a second think Albertans care about what the rest of the country thinks, look outside the province.

What I find odd is that you aren't asking why we don't take the same measures to halt the spread of the flu? How is it that you can just brush those deaths aside? It's your attitude towards the flu that is completely dishonest and is contributing to far more death.

The wife & I went out for a drive today. It was a beautiful day here in Ontario. The sunshine and fresh air was wonderful. There were people everywhere. At one point my wife turned to me and said "what quarantine"?
Apparently the real number of people you'll infect if you are a carrier is indeed, 2, and not 7 as has been reported here. 2.2, to be exact, according to the WHO.
Hard to find data on the flu amid all the covid coverage so we'll go with the WHO numbers of between 300,000 - 650,000 deaths world-wide. Trump, and I am sure many others, say they are surprised that flu is such a killer. Duh! This despite the fact that we know so much about it and have been living with it for so long, which is why we aren't scared of it.
Deaths from covid-19 at around 46,000 world-wide. But we don't know much about it so, y'know, we're scared.
The U.S. is projecting deaths could reach 240,000. Down considerably from the initial projection of 2,000,000. Because of these numbers, Trump says he has done "an amazing job". He's his biggest fan.
I haven't found anyone projecting the expected total numbers of deaths world wide from covid-19. Guess we'll have to wait and see if it surpasses the flu's numbers.
People in Ontario have been trying to call in to the Canada Service centres to resolves issues with their E.I. claims. Few, if any, are getting through. People have been calling all day, every day, for weeks now. E.I. would be nice to get if you could actually file the claim successfully. One of the questions asked when to try to file a claim online is "are you out of work due to the covid-19 virus?". If you say, "Yes", your claim is locked and you must call the Canada Service centre to speak to one of their agents. Good luck with that.
Checked on my investments today. The value of my portfolio has shrunk 25%
People are being told they don't have to pay their rent. Others are deferring their mortgage payments. Oddly, no such concessions from electric, gas, water, and insurance.
    Good times.

With how low the market is right now, I'd be purchasing stocks through TFSAs instead of RRSPs because...
    1) In either investment vehicle, the sales would be exempt from capital gains taxes provided you buy/sell from within the plan.
    2) As economic times are uncertain - by purchasing through a TFSA instead of an RRSP, the funds are still accessible without adverse tax consequences. That is, if I needed the money later in 2020, I could withdraw it from my TFSA without increasing my taxable income (not the case for RRSPs)... there are some more intricate rules for TFSAs here if you're close to your TFSA limit, but if you're well below it, you should be fine (talk to your financial advisor if you're unsure).
    3) As most of us are, to some degree, working less, we'll likely be earning less income for 2020, meaning the main pro RRSPs have over TFSAs (an upfront tax deduction), is much less advantageous - as most of us will be in a lower earning bracket (thus saving less marginal tax) for 2020 at least. Of course, if you really like contributing to RRSPs, you could choose to carry forward the RRSP deductions to a future taxation year.

This isn't directed at you, 17to85. Here's the thing. Yeah, it's a joke & all generations get old eventually. But it's just not about Boomers. My wife is an Oncology RN at the Tom Baker cancer Centre in Calgary. She sees death everyday. Sometimes her patients come in for treatment & then disappear so she checks the obits every morning before work to see if she can recognize any patients she has treated that have passed away.  These nurses & doctors are pretty stoic when they lose a patient. It's still very hard on them when someone young or was a long term treatment patient suddenly dies & it does take a toll emotionally.
Cancer doesn't discriminate based on age like people do. Every cancer patient undergoing chemo & radiation treatments has their systems immuno-compromised. The 80 year old with liver cancer to the 4 year old with neuroblastoma or the 30 year old with a young wife & family who has been stricken with Leukemia. What about them? They're not all Boomers & I'd say the vast majority are super scared & don't want to die.
Floyd suggested Boomers are taking up space like somehow it's their fault they are old & sick. My son's sister in law is expecting a baby in Portland any day now.  As of today she is 3 days overdue. That infant for all intents & purposes when born will have no immune system as it hasn't fully developed. A perfect little target for the Covid 19 virus. What about that kid? Shouldn't it have a chance to grow & get old like us? Millions of people of all ages are sick & taking up space in hospitals worldwide. None of them want to be there. As a society, do we now look at bed shortages, ventilator & mask shortages & blame it all on the sick? Now, we're going to sacrifice them for the good of the economy? Or for people who are conceived as being more net contributors to society?  Giving them a better chance to live & recover. Is that what society has come down to now? We'll now dispose of the old & sick to save someone younger?? They are doing that now in Italy & it looks like it'll be that way in the US in the coming weeks. What a terrible position to be in as a treating physician to have to make those choices. And if one of those sacrificed is a loved one. I just can't imagine...
And Floyd, if you get sick & have to go to hospital, chances are there will be a Boomer nurse & physician to take care of you & to allay your fears all the while risking their health & the health of their families to treat you. We're in this together.

You don't like racism when Trump call it the Chinese Virus then quit making it about ageism. Your Boomer comment does not help.

As good a time as any to return the Bank of Canada to it's original purpose.  If not now than probably never.

Restore the use of the Bank of Canada to its original purpose, by exercising its public statutory duty and responsibility. That purpose includes making interest-free loans to the municipal/provincial/federal governments for ‘human capital’ expenditures (education, health, other social services) and/or infrastructure expenditures.
