25/26 CFL (Non Bombers) Off Season Thread
I don't know league wide, but Liam Dobson did the full tour including wanting to play in the USFL before finally arriving here. We had the exact same conversations regarding his want to be here prior to him finally signing as we are having now with Elgersma. I believe we waited a full year before he finally signed. Had the USFL been able to get him a PVisa to play, we likely wouldn't have seen him in 2022 either. I am not sure the UFL is better at getting these visas for NATs now, and that is likely the reason we have not seen Elgersma in the UFL. Dobson had signed a 2 year contract with the USFL that was nullified when they couldn't secure him a PVisa. At the time the USFL contracts only allowed outs to the NFL. That's how close we came to losing a 3rd overall pick. The reason cited for choosing the USFL was that it was only 9k less than the NAT draftee rookie contract but had half the number of games, and wrapped up before NFL TCs. This is the biggest notable draftee I can think of off hand, but I am sure there are others who have taken a similar approach prior to the CFL. Sage Doxtater and Paris Shand are other notable high picks that kicked around the spring leagues prior to the CFL. In Shand's case he just signed his first CFL contract recently.

Have their been any other NAT drafted players who have flirted with the UFL/XFL? AFAIK with Elgersma the only link is that they drafted him, I haven't seen any indication that that is where he is going to end up either.

I get the league's want for cost certainty but it is ridiculous for that quest to be attached to coaching, and NAT draftees. NAT draftees, quality ones, are an issue in this league and having reduced capacity for quality coaching and recruitment just waters down our league's talent base as well. We increased our overall salary cap, yet we can't find a proper wage scale for valuable commodities like coaching and NAT draftees. It's, as you put it, bush. You don't have to compete with the NFL salary wise, but you can't pigeon hole a NAT draftee for 3 years of his career either. Guys will go to the UFL instead or take flyers on weak NFL interest. We've seen it, we are seeing it, it's a problem. It's not imaginary. The top of our draft classes are choosing to chase the NFL despite very weak interest in them. Elgersma is not the first high draft pick we've waited to go through NFL interest then the UFL before coming here.

Random Jets News
#NHLJets Scott Arniel: Vlad Namestnikov is week-to-week. Could be faster than that, but will be looked at again in Winnipeg. Scheifele was maintenance, at this point it looks like he’ll play against SJS. Nino Niederreiter had a lower-body surgery. He’s week-to-week.

Yes it is frustrating when the fanbase is dumb. Go to a Lions game in Vancouver some time.

Pretty classic game for the Jets this season… and why they’re on the outside looking in. But without 2 of their top D men, it certainly wasn’t a bad showing against a good team. I was at the game and it was pretty hilarious how ignorant that fan base is. Not shocking, but still…. I’ve never heard so many ‘refs you suck’ chants. After some really obvious calls/non calls. They really have no idea what the rules are. And the constant ‘USA’ chants were pretty damn annoying too.

Of course but improving, enhancing CFL caps might better attract/entice NFL fringe players (prospect and existing) who want a decent wage and be playing. Better talent in the CFL draws revenue increases cap. Easy peasy said no one ever when talking the CFL.

I think Morgan would be worth a look.....but like you say he needs some polish....The trouble with him just being an arm out there, I believe MBT is still available and with the CFL experience he has, I would say a club might go there first

Blew a 3-1 lead ... Had to score in the last 2 minutes... And then eventually lost in overtime. Our gold medal goalie was lit up for five goals last night.

No matter what the cap is, or exemptions there is no way a cfl team can compete with the nfl financially. It would just drive up payrolls

well today I finished the Marvelous Mrs Maisel...that should have gotten more Emmys (yeah I know it got Emmy love in it's first season but then Fleabag came along) Alex Borstein was the real star of the show, my favourite Susie quote is actually from the first episode of the series when she said that Dr Salk should have created a vaccine for Morons

12 points back of the wild card. Jets need to win every game and the wild card teams need to lose.

als cut james morgan right before his 30th birthday. if he wants it he will probably get another cfl camp from some one as the last arm/ extra arm. Hes got a great arm, decent release and he’s still got tons of upside. Almost no chance of fulfilling it though. He’s more of a pitcher than a qb. And qbs who get to the pros with out any touch or accuracy basically never pan out. Maybe a team thinks their qb coach can finally fix his mechanics and bring finesse into his game. Or maybe a team will just want that wild, raw arm talent in camp for depth defenders and wrs to work with/against.

There needs to be options with the caap for rookies being so low like naming a player who can opt out of it. Something to get a promising player on the roster. The way it's set up now is stupid. Teams have no way of enticing younger players up here like Elgersma.

Curling
Don Duguid was one of the curling greats Manitoba had ever produce. A prolific shotmaker & a natural leader, Don won (I believe) 3 Briers for Manitoba. Two as a skip & one in 1970 & 71 & one as third for Terry Braunstein in 1965. Duguid's third during those 2 years was the glue of those Brier teams. Rod Hunter was guy who was laser straight on the broom everytime he threw a rock. Could make every shot there was as a third making Don's shotmaking a lot easier. Just a great player who lost his life ten years ago in a slip & fall. Rod was a HOF curler. Back in the day, 60 years ago, the ice was swingy & heavy. Inferior ice making machines as well as temperature swings outdoors as well as humidity played havoc with the ice sometimes. Ice could vary from sheet to sheet. Heavy & swingy outside to straight & true inside. Then there was the debris from the corn flying off the brooms when rocks were being swept. Through all of that, Hunter was an exceptional shotmaker. Perhaps the best third of his generation. In today's game, it really makes you wonder just how much better he would have been? I believe, he'd have been a Brier, World & Olympic champion skip multiple times. The Arrow as he was called was phenomenal during his era. I think he would have been the same today if he was in his prime.

I can see the reason for 3 years..teams draft, invest in their Canadian talent only for them to leave depending where the player calls home...and the salary cap is to protect the teams from themselves..overpaying and risking the collapse of the league, again. It's low but for our league unfortunately it's necessary.

Too bad. An elite curler. He'll be missed as a player on the national stage.

Okay, maybe saying he "**** on the CFL" bordered on the ridiculousl. For that, I was wrong. I absolutely agree with your take, though The CFL is a league that just doesn't get why it isn't even mentiobned in a Toronto fan poll. The coaches & admin cap along with the rookie salary cap have to go. Why three years for Canadians & just two for Americans? These rules are strangling the CFL & not allowing for any kind of growth to take place. It also makes the CFL look bush league. Especially in Toronto, Calgary & Edmonton where fan support is apathetic. No exponential growth will happen until the league & the new Commish fix these meat & potato issues.
