Bombers release 4 more...

I bitched about the Etienne selection & his subsequent useless Bomber career but was admonished by most here because they felt he needed to be given a chance. Well, it's just about 4 seasons later & he'll be known as one of the worst, if not the worst first round picks ever by the Bombers. If he was a fourth round selection, I'd have been fine with it. But first round?? Ugh! Mack was clueless.

He's not even close to our worst 1st round pick ever.

Darron McField.

Robertson released?  Does he have eligibility?  Or are we just not into a 5'6 DB...  I thought he was decent enough to keep a spot at least for another week.

Another new bomber era erasing all signs of the last one...

I hear you Iso but to be fair, last year he looked like he was starting to make a contribution until he got walloped in the head and was essentially done for the year. Worst first rounder ever? I don't know...there's been some real stinkers, and for a lot of draft years, we never even had a first round pick. I think Pencer is more of a bust then Jade, as at least Jade saw the field.

Here's a walk down memory lane of some of our first round picks over the years:

2000 (second overall): Daaron McField, DL -- Lasted one season, never started and traded away in his second season.

1996 (fourth): Andrew Henry, DB: role player for two seasons.

1995 (sixth): Sean Graham, SB: Lasted three injury-plagued seasons.

1994 (fourth): Ryan Carey, DB: Special teams specialist.

1993 (fifth): Alan Wetmore, LB: Another special-teams guy.

1989 (eighth): John O'Brien, LB: Never played a single game in Blue and Gold.

1988 (third): Dan Wicklum, LB: Lasted one season before getting picked up by Calgary.

1987 (sixth): Andrew McConnell, DL: Never played for Bombers.

1986 (seventh): Brian Bellway, DL: Never played for Bombers.

The most amazing thing to me from that list is that we didn't have a single first round pick from 2001 through 2007!?!?  Did we trade them all for starting Canadians? Please tell me we at least got Doug Brown for one of those.

Doug Brown was one of them, another was for Pat Barnes, another was for Gauthier, I forget what the others were, maybe one was involved in the clusterfuck when Tom Canada was traded but couldn't be traded for that MLB...

We got Dougie for a third round pick. I don't recall how we got Barnes but I think you are confusing him for Spurgeon Wynn.

No there was a first round pick involved in the Brown trade, the Stamps too Oosterhuis who they then PRer and Taman grabbed. Trust me on this one it's 100% accurate. Barnes was absolutely a first round pick as well. TIllman was pissed because he wanted to take Barnes in the expansion draft. Wynn I believe was had for a first round pick as well. If you want to keep arguing with me go ahead but be prepared to be wrong.

Corey Mace and a first round pick (instead of Tom Canada) for Zeke Moreno.

One of the great trades of our time.

Speaking of revisionist history....

That was Mark Cohon(?) being more of a rookie commissioner than any blame on Taman.  Trading Mace and Canada for Moreno was a decent desperation trade to keep our playoff hopes alive.  The CFL had no understanding of the importance of NI talent when they acted as a 'mediator'.

You can't defend Mack on one hand and then throw Taman under the bus.

Where did I even mention Taman?

called saulsberry, saw no use for him with the way morley and goossen played.

I almost want to say robertson got the aardvark kiss of death earlier in the year ;)

gatling? didn't notice him too much last game and the other DE/DL.. same thing. Didn't notice him at all.

Wynn was for a conditional pick.  I don't know what ridiculous condition it was (still breathing when he shows up for training camp?) but it did become a first round pick.  BC took Pottinger second overall with that pick.

The records of all this stuff are pretty much lost if you don't have access to the file room at CFL headquarters (I assume that's the men's room at the Denny's by the airport), but we had a third round pick from BC in that same 2006 draft.  Was that part of this deal or a separate one, I'm not sure.  The player we got with that pick was Dom Picard, and he was a gooder.  If he was part of that trade then it was pretty much a wash.  If he wasn't, ouch.

And yes, Oost was definitely part of the Doug Brown deal.  That we also got the player Calgary drafted with the pick we gave them for Brown is one of the things Taman will proudly point to during his time at the Bomber helm.
