Deal done!

Recommended Posts

Any news on the previously discussed provision that the CAP increases if the tv deal goes up $1 million each year ?

IIRC the league had proposed a cap increase of $100k per season.

$50,000 increase is pathetic IMO.

Flory only had power if the players were united. Clearly the strike votes weren't going their way.

The votes were supposedly near 100% in favour of strike for all teams, remember???? So what the hell happened? Strange.

The original strike vote. That's the vote where unions ask its members to give them leverage. The new votes taking place this weekend must have been a lot different.

Players are their own worst enemies. Tweeting such stupidity. Talk about unified. Lol

The CFLPA needs a new lawyer.

Not sure what a better lawyer would do.  The blame has to fall squarely on Scott Flory and whoever else was pushing the outrageous demands from the beginning.  This deal should have been worked out in the off-season, with the players coming in with a more reasonable offer.  In my opinion, if they hadn't have played hardball, they could have gotten a little more out of this deal.

First as a player, Scott Flory messed up contract in Saskatchewan then messes up CFLPA with the CBA. I wonder how long he'll stay President? Somewhere Mike Morreale is smiling.

Morreale wouldn't have done any better.

Maybe not but they dumped Mike because they thought he would. Flory didn't live up to expectations. The old adage, "Be careful what you wish for as it may come true."

They need a real pro to run things. Someone who actually understands sports labour negotiations & would have the next 4 years to get caught up on the CFL business modl. Not Bupkis & his Buddies.

duane forde said it  best.. the CFLPA got a decent deal here but because the execs set such unrealistic expectations, it looks like a loss.

This one is on flory for thinking they could get way more when reality is this is the best they could have gotten.

Think this isn't fair? lol if the players went on strike, then you'd see a brutal deal for them.

They were never gonna get what they wanted, thats why it looks like a loss on them, set unrealistic expectations that we all know were never gonna happen.

Realistically what are there other options? strike and actually lose big time?

go play in the arena league for way less?  get a real job?

nope, take this deal cuz if they didn't they wouldn't have got anything close to this in the future.

These guys like to pretend they are heros or something, doing it for the future players of the league but reality is.. all they care about is getting the best deal for themselves.

several execs have already said the bump in the salary cap will go to the canadians and the qbs. The average player here  gains very little and honestly, it doesn't matter if they accepted it today, last night.. a week from now a year ago... that's who would get the money in the end.

@ArashMadani: BREAKING: Just exchanged texts with Ricky Foley. "I can tell you definitively that the Roughriders will be 90% against deal," he wrote. #CFL

@ArashMadani: #Riders DE Ricky Foley also went on in text messages to say he believes the majority of #RedBlacks players will vote against new CBA. #CFL

however, if you believe madani's tweets to the right, maybe they wont accept it at all.

if they don't, they are digging their own graves.

They should all just shut up and vote.. get it over with.

Quit playing the twitter and texting games. It's getting sickening already.

I still think it passes by a large percentage.

if they vote this deal down, they will get nothing in the future. zilch zero nadda. The owners will not cave.

This is the best they will get, it's a take it or leave it

take it or risk getting nothing.

Are the players that stupid?

I think the proposed arrangement is a significant improvement for the players.

Cap this year went from 4.4 to 5.0 million per team, that's a 13% increase.  The minimum also went up by a similar amount. They got concessions in more players, reduction of padded practises, and removal of option year for vets (good for players, bad for fans)  They also got healthy signing bonuses.  In the real world, this is a generous contract.

True that they didn't get the "pie in the sky" demands that were completely unrealistic....but anyone one that thought they would was not in touch with reality.  In the vast majority of cases, unions that switch to more combative leadership don't usually fare better, they just end up with more bitterness and anger because they set unrealistic expectations.   Many union leaders are like politicians, they promise more than they can realistically deliver in order to get elected, and after then gain power, reality sets in.

The better leaders set a realistic goal, and work hard on getting their priorities taken care of.    Quite often, once the company has put down the final offer, smart union leadership recognizes that, and negotiates to allocate the limited resources to the most important areas.   Looks like in this case, it was signing bonuses for vets instead of bigger increases to the minimum rates.  I would suggest that this was due to there being more vets as the team reps taking care of number 1, and not caring much for the guys at the bottom of the seniority list.   I don't know the details of when these bonuses are due, but if it is at the end of camp, it may cost more vets their jobs.  This may also depend on whether the signing bonus is part of the cap for each team.   Reality dictates that there has to be a value to cost ratio.

The old saying is underpromise and overdeliver.  Flory overpromised to such a ridiculous extent that underdelivering was always a certainty.

Well, this sure is showing just how fractured the players are, and how ignorant some like Mo Price are.  I can understand the Foley's and Cornish's viewpoints, not so much the Mo Price's who probably won't make it through half of the term of the proposed deal.  From a selfish point of view, going to any extreme would not make sense for any import player.  The fact that the CFLPA executive is endorsing this mediated deal should be a pretty good indicator to the players that they won't get any better deal.

If there is anything that positive that has come out of this is Mo Price and his hashtag  #Allhunnits

Why would anyone want to be President of a neutered & totally useless union. Guys making fifty grand, no leverage as the players are broke. Ownership knows that so they show little respect. What a thankless job. Now, having said that, Flory promised the players the moon. Trouble is, the rocket is still on Pad 19 at Cape Canaveral.

Yep - it's useless because the league isn't really a major league. It's not the 'final destination' and 90% of players are not here for the long term. They just want to play and hone their skills for the NFL. Striking won't accomplish that.

Guess what though, you live in Canada. The CFL is indeed the major leagues here in Canada.

I'm not sure how people fail to understand that Canada is not part of the USA.

Why is the CFL not major league? because why? your reasons are flawed, 90 percent of NFL players dont last long either.

What makes the CFL not the major leagues in the country you live in?

The fact that Canada has like 300 ++ million less people than the USA does?

In Canada, the CFL is as big as it gets, therefore it's a major league, just cuz its not on the same level as the NFL doesn't mean it isn't.

The NFL should change its name to the AFL because  basically its the american football league. You get it now? in Canada we got the Canadian football league.
