25/26 CFL (Non Bombers) Off Season Thread

Is this ever a guy we should take a run at? I really like Pokey as a receiver but not sure he's a 1A Superstar guy... Would you ever take a run at Hatcher as your #1 and then have Pokey and Demski as 2/3?

I hate change. This is going to take me like a year to get used to.

Can confirm - ran it through Google Translate and this is what came back:

  • Brady is the most complete running back in the CFL full stop. Rushing, receiving, blocking, no one does it all as well as he does.   Now that doesn't automatically make the contract he got w

Yup at this point develop Perkins Thorne Wilson or Artopoeous and trade Elgersma for a pile of picks.

We are clearly back in win now mode. We reached a bit for him, but with the nfl interest and pre season his value should be up if any thing. The draw is mainly in making a hype move, which is still valuable for half the league.

I’d be happy if we took a former high pick, and got a mid round pick, or moved up in the global draft, or got other creative value. Some one like manu might be a worthy mix in for a team stock piling futures.

Go out and find a qb who is quick enough to reliably make the first man miss when breaking the pocket and fast enough to out run cfl ends to the corner on boundary side. If he is coach able enough to stay low on the short yardage pack, you have a better qb3 than most teams in the league. (sad statement that is)

And really put pressure on wilson, chase, and especially perkins to step up. No failing down into qb2, and 3 spots. Make one win qb2, or send them all home.

Nfl tc money is not the same as pr though.

Last year, players with less than 1 year service got 1850 a week. this year that goes up to 2k.

For a full camp, plus the pre season games, guys with less than a year service get around 11-15k. Which is in the range of 15-20k canadian, before taxes.

It only takes a couple weeks on a pr to out earn a cfl deal, but elgersma isn’t in that position. He as of yet hasn’t gotten a futures contract or camp invite even.

To get that, he will now have to beat out an entire new rookie crop. This based off a preseason appearance, and a cis resume.

He isn’t rourke, and rourke has basically no leverage and got barely a shot.

I understand chasing nfl pr money, but he isn’t making some easy, economically sound decision. He’s gambling for more money with a pretty small chance of wining.

The time to get a look now is counting down his nfl widow days after a cfl deal as well. If he kicks around for another year then comes up, he puts him self in a tight spot. He turns 25 next month, it’s going to be 2 years before he would get nfl consideration if he fast tracks to success. At that point he’s 28 for the next nfl camp, right at the end of his nfl window.

I get it, but it’s long term, short odds gambling. At this point, I’d be happy if we traded his rights and sold high on him.

Elgersma's actually ******* himself over without realizing it. He hasn't had a tryout in weeks. Teams are now turning attention to college pro days, upcoming NFL Draft & college free agent qbs not drafted. With the new qb crop, he'll slide down even further. It's his (career) funeral. I'm sure he has lots of stories about his NFL travels, how great Matt LaFleur & Jordan Love were when he's in the qb room with his guys at Laurier. They'll just gawk & go, "Wow!!" Stupid is as stupid does. https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.ama

he is. who ever reps him in the us is not doing him a service

I get two impressions of Elgersma:

  1. He doesn't seem to want to play in Winnipeg or the Bombers. Even if he does sign here, he'll be gone at the first opportunity. So, don't hang your hat on he being a long term starter for us.

  2. That the CFL is beneath him. He's been told by his agents that he's an NFL qb & dammit, that's what he's going to be. Until he isn't. No matter how long it takes. A year & a half ago, no one knew who this guy was because he played for an obscure little college playing that strange 3 down football ****. In that ice sheet of a country called Canada. All they do is play hockey.

  3. When Tyler was in Grade 11, he also wanted to play NCAA in the US for Boise State, among other universities. He went to one of their high school camps in Boise throwing the ball in a workout. They liked him but ultimately chose someone else because the qb coach there felt Tyler's 3 down fooball background wasn't "real football". So yeah, I've heard the same **** Elgersma is going through with the NFL.

Tyler could out throw most of the American qbs he went against. He always had one of the strongest arms at any camp he attended. He also could scramble although not a run first qb as he liked staying in the pocket & throw. This was 2011 & 12. The game has since changed, It drove some of the college coaches crazy to see that as they couldn't believe their eyes & were afraid to take a chance with a Canadian kid on a 4 year scholarship.

The best he got was a walk on opportunity with the University of Oregon. Tyler got a personal letter to from HC Chip Kelly. I tried talking to Kelly by phone & left messages for him to call me as his private secretary would never put him through to me. He never called back. I wss hoping that once he found out about our finances he might have a change of heart for a scholarship.

We couldn't get funding for him to walk on from Canadian or American sources. Tuition was $30000 US a year plus room & board. Unaffordable for us. The barriers that are put up seem a thousand feet tall for Canadian qbs. He signed with SFU.

Yeah im not arguing that Elgersma will end up on a PR/Roster etc etc. Just that the rookie contracts give him (or any other player who seem to believe they'll catch on down south) little to no reason to come to the CFL.
