At the very least, they need to stop pretending Jake Thomas is prime Doug brown and have the chat with him. Perhaps have the chat with Willie also who seems to do lots of nothing out there. Get the old men some backups at the very least. Stop dressing 13 linebackers.  And every time Zach throws a rookie interception, he should be benched as Streveler appears more capable at this point.

They never challenged the field vertically at all last night. Even when it was 37-9 Stamps, we still were dinkng & dunking. I mean, the Stamps secondary is improvd from last year from the looks of things but they're not THAT GOOD. I think Zach's longest throw was 22 yards.

That shows you just how bad our 9th ranked receiving corps are. Wheatfall is our lone deep threat & he was invisible. It didn't have to be that way but suddenly this past off season, Walters is a penny pinching GM like former Maple Leaf owner Harold Ballard was. We're hosting the GC ffs, why would they pick this year for financial restraint? The fans have supported this team now for 4 years giving the Bombers profits like they have never seen before. They deserve a lot better & didn't get it this past off season.

I don’t know if he’s cheap like Ballard was, but you’re not wrong about this offseason and the previous one as well. Scouting (or who we chose to keep after TC) and free agency have been abysmal.

I noted the lack of vertical shots as well, but I think it had a lot to do with the fact that collaros wasn't ever comfortable in the pocket.

Nope.  Walters has exceeded the cap 2 of the last three seasons so he spends just as much, if not more, than most teams.  How and where he chooses to spend, seems to be the bigger issue.

I didn't see much that changed from his approach this off-season.  He even stated that he's not changing just because we're hosting GC this year.  

Yeah he let Lawler walk (not the first time) and yeah guys like Dobson (not the first OL to leave) & Ford (also not the first DB to leave) took off but that's the same approach he's always taken - it's not new to this past off-season yet history shows he spends to or past the cap.  We won't know about this year until the spring.

Ford and Dobson got way more than they should’ve. Ford was better than solid, and still has tons of potential. But at the end of the day a db especially a field corner just isn’t worth top dollar. 
 

We sure didn’t make any attempt to add top end talent to our roster or replace both end guys. We got as many cheap lotto ticket type free agents as possible, and they all went bust.

Who is the last high end FA brought  in (excluding bringing Lawler back from Edmonton).  Willie? Bighill?  That's not really Walter's style (occasionally wish it was though). 

Even the guys they do sign, don't always get a chance to see the field (White or Mitchell for example) so it's a bit of a waste.

 

I thought J. Jones was a decently big FA addition... maybe not as a surefire all-star but that one was one I was certain was going to work out. Instead he sits on the one game IR because reasons.

And also how the game plan was universally praised after game 1 and game 1 only? Coincidence? I honestly think a ton of this teams offensive problems stem from collaros and his inability to adapt and change the way he wants to play. Here comes my broken record thought, this constant reluctance to employ an actual 2qb system (not just short yardage). I understand the difficulties and the challenges, some big brained football x and o football people here have posted on it but it still not enough for me for the team to work out some schemes in practice fitted for their existing talent and deploy it in a game, change things up try it out for an offensive set. You won’t know what will happen until you try. Being risk averse has its own draw backs as the same as taking chances has its draw backs. Find that sweet spot between the two.

Would love to see them work in a 2nd qb more. Seems a waste to park a guy like streveler on the bench until a minute left in an ass whooping game

Maybe. Field side corner should be making the plays he made imo. He had one or two outstanding plays, and got burnt on multiple double moves. He's athletic enough to make up for his mistakes. But as of right now, he's had one arguably better than solid season. For 230k you need to be out performing every defensive player on the field. 

There's no way for anyone to say whether or not they went after top end talent. Unless someone has phone records available.

Our free agency was garbage...and for whatever reason we didnt seem to wanna spend any money

We grabbed reclamation projects for most part...and reupped guys we didnt need to...well not before FA started anyway if we still felt the need

bringing lawler back in free agency. Winston rose before that. 
 We also didn’t have much money after the 21gc. We were continually in a position where we struggled just to being back our own guys, who were the top free agents available. 
Before that you can go through guys like Bryant, and harris. We also tried to get several of the top free agents at wr, went hard after moncrief twice etc. 
 We had consistently perused top free agents and successfully got our fair share.

Chris Randle was another..and yeah we used to target guys...there were some that said no too...was it cause they didnt wanna see their reps reduced here? Who knows...but maybe Walters needs to change his ways and evolve too..and spend a little...and also shelve his idea of only so many dollars alloted to this group...that group....and target impact guys and then sort it out...its not hard

Also...they have to take some of Osh's say away as it's apparent that he heavily influences some of the carrying of dead weight...and if he doesn't like it...kick stones and move on

The cfl free agent process and tampering is pretty open these days. And walters post free agent pressers are too. A lot of guys went after in the past are well known to the extent some of the offers were known

That is a play making position, but you can also do a lot of that at defensive hb and S. 
 He was basically a one year starter with seasoning. I have no doubt he could play at that level and higher if he was still here. 
 

for 230k as a db, man idk how you make that work or justify it. You gotta be a monster shut down man cover guy, be a monster coming up and playing the run, and have that dynamic play making. You have to change how offences play. 
 

Nichols is in the very top tier of dbs and does a chunk of that. But he isn’t close to that pay day. 
 As long as guys like Nichols, beverette, Pickett, Webb etc aren’t getting close to 200k, no one is worth what ford got. I’d take dequoy over ford straight up and he’s significantly cheaper.

I’m all for taking flyers on guys with upside. Having that be the exclusive attempt to improve the team through free agency is extremely risky and it failed spectacularly.

Walter's approach is totally different than it was decade ago. Back then, he was aggressive in free agency trying to build a contender. He was willing to pay for players & take risks & eventually he accomplished his goal as it paid off with GC wins back to back in 19 & 21..

I don't want to say Walters has become fat & sassy but this isn't the same guy as GM he was even back as recently as 2017-18. He comes across as he doesn't have to fill holes on the team as they'll fix themselves. He hasn't had a great off season in years. Players, coaches, & management leave & it's like the Stamps old mantra, "Next Man Up". Which is all well & good until there's no more Men to step up as the Stamps found out this decade. We've won because we had great depth but you can see that depth is being depleted & getting thinner. He seems to let Osh have total control on the roster, like who plays & who doesn't when our HC needs to be reigned in.

I don't disagree that his approach isn't the same and I was never arguing that.  I argued that he wasn't the cheapskate you made him out to be. He still spends money, it's just mostly internally as he seems to prefer re-signing existing guys over attracting new (potentially younger) talent.

He definitely isn't as aggressive in FA as he used to be but the team also wasn't as good so he kinda had to be.  If we maintain the status quo , we"ll be back in that situation.

Walters used to be a player in free agency and was willing to make trades and moves such as the above lead to the 2 cup wins and this era of success. The issue to me is  keeping some guys too long, less success in the draft and not scouting quite as well.

He became a cheapskate amid these massive profits the team is now reaping... Why? Yeah, we have a veteran team but so what? A  GM should still be aggressive even with a veteran team signing free agent players to push the guys already there. So, we sign a veteran free agent who pushes out a player already at that position. So what? I look at that as an improvement. Not just handing a guy like Thomas a starting spot every year. If Thomas is our best & the coaches actually think the players behind aren't as good as he is, then they all need to be swept away. Other teams do that but we don't. There seems to be a few sacred cows on this team with O'Shea.
