Are you off your meds? WTF does that mean? You sound more & more like an idiot with every post.

You said I was heartless for questioning why we are shutting down western civilization for a virus that primarily kills people over 65.

I was just assuming you're over 65.

I'm not. But close. Just remember you could be diagnosed with something sinister next week & your life changes for the bad regardless of your age. Young men & women who thought they were more invincible than you had their lives changed by a visit to their doctor. Moms & Dads with young families. Or parents of little kids having to watch them be sick or worse.

My wife sees it everyday at the Tom Baker Cancer Centre in Calgary. Adults in their 20's, 30's & 40's taken years before they should have been. So, this worthless old age stuff you keep spouting as some kind of Red Badge Of Courage for you because you're still young means nothing. It just means I made it further in life than you have.

I mean you guys do see the irony of a forum that consistently is like 'oh he's 29 years old and lost a step... buh bye' and then actually makes fun of guys who can't keep up or have long-term injuries...

But now we're freaking out about anyone who questions shutting down society for a virus that targets specifically the old and the weak...

Apples and oranges - or just borderline trolling.

Canada should be able to re-open by Easter if these numbers hold - but I doubt we will - panic has taken hold

Covid will be over in Canada by May...

One more month in Canada and maybe two in States - if that.

Weren't you JUST arguing that Canada is not doing well...?  Haha - I love this place some days.  So random.

Yeah, not sure what planet you think we are on... but we are not shutting down the economy for 12-18 months and if you do, you must have a govt job where you still get paid to sit on your couch.

Canada will declare the curve flattened by June - we'll go back to work with some new plexiglass barriers, wearing masks and use more automated tellers - people will die of Covid but it will become just a part of life

1) I was not JUST arguing that Canada is not doing well. I have NEVER made that argument. I have argued that those who have said that the measures taken are unnecessary because it is media hype are ignoring the seriousness of the threat and not following the raw data on the exponential progression of the spread. You wanted to, in my mind, minimize the risk by saying the fatality rate was only 0.017%, according to your own data, and you were flat out wrong in reading your own stats. The lockdown is working, but where you and I may differ is that you act like the measures can now stop because it has worked and we are out of the woods. I see it getting worse before it gets better, based on where the curve is going now and based on how other countries who started feeling the effects of the virus months ahead of us have turned out. If it is starting to plateau, great, but that means we stay the course until the threat has really passed rather than saying back to work since we are on top of it today.

2) Given your accusation of me flip-flopping on arguments, thought I’d refresh your memory on your time frame for the passing of the virus in your opinion.  In the span of one day and 3 posts you went from Easter to start of May to June as the all clear period So you can’t even hold to your own story when it is questioned.

3) Just for the record, I do have a Government job, as does my wife. We are both essential services, me for law enforcement and her in a health care being called to multiple hospitals to care for patients, including testing patients for Covid 19. So neither of us are sitting in our house collecting a cheque, we don’t get that option to work from home and are forced to still go into the community at large and expose ourselves every day to those who may her the virus, certainly her more than me. We’ve even moved out of our house and are living in cottage country so as to separate ourselves from our kids to protect them. She is a nervous wreck every day leaving the house, and because the governing health agency has decided masking is not essential for health care workers, and they won’t employ the use of the filtered masks, and won’t test every person who shows symptoms because they may not qualify (ie did not also travel), she has had to buy her own limited supply of 95 grade masks and filters out of her pocket. Not sure what she’ll do when she runs out.

Spare me the sanctimony.

I'm 47 just not a drama queen.  If you're not 65, you should be, you talk like you're 80.

1) You are cherry picking my posts the same as you accuse me of doing... that's fine.  My original post said the curve is flattening and for sure it is in Western Canada...  Quebec snowbirds may be complicating that but Manitoba is not a hotbed of Covid either.

2)  In a rational world, we could be coming out of lockdown by May or even Easter - I stand by that.  May or Easter is not flip flopping.  That is my opinion - in reality, we are out by June  in Canada.  Right or wrong.

3) Yes, of course you are fine with a two year lockdown - you get paid no matter what, many people don't.  You won't lose your house or your job.  Save me the personal sob story - I have mine too, my friend's dad is in a covid coma - and our personal stories should make zero difference for government policy.

It is because of social distancing that the curve is flattening. We can't just stop our measures the moment the curve begins to flatten. Returning to normal by Easter or May would certainly make it get out of hand again. 6 months is the magic number for social distancing measures to successfully ensure that the healthcare system doesn't get overwhelmed. And that is provided that we are meeting our targets.

You’re comparing football injuries & a few critical sports fans to how people react to a pandemic.  That’s just obtuse.

There are absolute parallels.  A sports forum focuses on the ideals of the best survive and the weak are eliminated.

Now we are socialists... I always was - so that's fine - but its an interesting parallel.

I totally agree.

But we also cannot shut down the world for six months and not expect a price to be paid - my cousin needs an emergency triple bypass this week and my other cousin lives with dementia in a care home - they and other cases should suffer while we shut down the world for covid?  These are very small examples - but IF the percentages keep moving towards 2% infection and 1% death rate - we will be open by June.

Also, flattening the curve is not six months... its two years if you really look at the data...

My original post got lit up for 'downplaying' covid... but its actually reason for hope - if you REALLY look at the data right now - we should have a much higher death rate given that we are in the 'no response' timeline and not even the lockdown timeline.

Canada is not going to get hit like Italy.  This is a good thing - hide in your house until 2021 if you want, but we should be done by May.

That is one hell of a stretch... you appear to be purposefully obtuse to "win" your argument.

Well there's no actual argument to win...

I can find my original post ha

There you go... now that I read it again - nothing seems really controversial other than the Easter comment (which makes sense since in the Yukon we've been under lockdown for two weeks already... so I now see how its different in eastern Canada)

So - as of right now - Coronavirus in Canada already looks flattened...  lockdown seemed to work pretty quickly

1% of cases are critical and of those 1.7% have been fatal - deaths spiked around March 16-22 but then dropped back down and are not increasing exponentially

It really seems like we do not  have the population density for this virus to overwhelm our entire country

Canada should be able to re-open by Easter if these numbers hold - but I doubt we will - panic has taken hold

Again as of right now - JV5 seems to have a point about the flu v. covid - why don't we care that flu kills up to 650,000 people globally each year... is it just because its mostly in poor countries?

Canada-wide stats for April 5:

1,600 new cases today (Highest daily total to date) and 49 more deaths (second highest daily total to date).

Cases will rise exponentially because we are distributing tests... if you look at April 2019 - there were zero covid cases.

We need to monitor deaths - across Canada, it looks exponential... but in BC and western Canada it is absolutely not

Just sit back for a second and think to yourself why I'm being accused of being a heartless monster for suggesting we leave our houses by May...

How many people will die alone in this next month while we hide from covid?  How many people will live in abusive households?  Or won't get diagnosed in time?

One month is enough.  And given that Yukon went into isolation two weeks ago - we should be emerging by Easter in a rational world.
