Covid-19

I'm starting this thread as a side discussion of all things Corona Virus related. I understand that this is going to be discussed in almost all other topic threads but we could collect news and other items here.

At work, many conferences have been cancelled.

NBA - Suspended.

NHL - About to be suspended.

NCAA March Madness - Playing - no crowd.

Political Rallies have been cancelled.

Travel bans.

Rita Wilson and Tom Hanks tested positive. They're in Australia where testing is available. If they were in the US, they wouldn't have been tested.

Oklahoma Gov. Kevin Stitt announced Wednesday that he has coronavirus and said he's the first governor to test positive for it.

The city of Tulsa has experienced a recent surge in coronavirus cases following President Donald Trump's rally there on June 20, at which Stitt was present without a facial covering. On Wednesday, the governor downplayed the possibility that he contracted the virus at the event.

Some raw data to chew on, courtesy of worldometers.com:

USA cases -

Jan. 21 - first case

Apr. 10 - 500,000 (80 days)

Apr. 27 - 1,000,000 (17 days) (97 days for first 1,000,000)

May 16 - 1,500,000 (19 days)

Jun. 7 - 2,000,000 (22 days) (41 days for next 1,000,000)

Jun 25 - 2,500,000 (18 days)

Jul. 6 - 3,000,000 (11 days) (29 days for next 1,000,000)

Jul. 14 - 3,500,000 (8 days) (on pace for 16 days for next 1,000,000 based on the last 7 days average)

USA deaths -

Feb. 29 - first death

Apr. 4 - 10,000 (35 days)

Apr. 9 - 20,000 (5 days)

Apr. 14 - 30,000 (5 days)

Apr. 18 - 40,000 (4 days)

Apr. 23 - 50,000 (5 days)

Apr. 28 - 60,000 (5 days)

May 4 - 70,000 (6 days)

May 8 - 80,000 (4 days)

May 15 - 90,000 (7 days)

May 23 - 100,000 (8 days)

Jun. 2 - 110,000 (10 days)

Jun. 13 - 120,000 (11 days)

Jun. 30 - 130,000 (17 days)

Jul. 13 end of day - 138,247 (based on the last 7 day average of 750 cases per day, will hit 140,000 Jul. 16 or 16 days later; based on last 2 day average of 430 cases per day, will hit it Jul. 17)

Deaths always lag behind cases. Waiting to see if death rate will spike due to capacity in ICUs as is being reported in many states, or if treatments have improved. But some commenters who said it looked like the US just up and quit trying to protect against the virus as July hit may be on to something.

So 2 days of over 900 deaths and they hit 140,000 today, a day earlier than my last projection. I guess it’s not as under control as suggested.

America Is on Track for a Million Coronavirus Cases a Day, and at Least 800,000 Deaths, by the End of 2020

Until we have effective and safe medications, a proven vaccine and better testing, our best shot at getting control would be to again close many businesses and activities. If someone had suggested five months ago that we would be seeing more than 3 million cases and 135,000 COVID-19 deaths in the U.S. by mid-July, I wouldn’t have believed it.

But now it’s distinctly possible that, five months from now, half of all Americans could have been infected with SARS-CoV-2, and more than 800,000 Americans may die in this extraordinary outbreak. That is what many of our most prominent public-health experts now expect.

Could their projection models be off base? Maybe. But don’t count on it. As bad as the health consequences, disruptions, restrictions, and fear of the last five months have been, things could get a whole lot worse.

Dang shame this ^^ could happen especially when the experts say if everybody listened, and wore masks too, then it would be contained in 4-8 weeks.
Unfortunately, too many Covidiots out there to pay attention.

Donald Trump Is At War With COVID-19 Science

The ongoing pandemic shows just how dangerous, and deadly, his continued rejection of science and expertise can be.  At a roundtable at Louisiana State University on Tuesday, Vice President Mike Pence paused to make what he clearly felt was a vital point.

“To be very clear,” he said, “we don’t want CDC guidance to be a reason why people don’t reopen their schools.”

In other words, schools and universities, which the Trump administration is pushing to rapidly reopen despite surging coronavirus infections in many states, need not heed the advice of scientists at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the nation’s premier public health agency, as they reopen amid an ongoing pandemic that has killed more than 136,000 people in the U.S.

Alberta, B.C. And Saskatchewan See COVID-19 Cases Increase

Don’t call it a second wave, but COVID-19 cases are starting to creep back up in Western Canada. The increase — particularly cases among young people — is setting off alarm bells for health officials there.

Alberta saw 86 new COVID-19 cases on Tuesday, the most cases in a single day in over two months, and 82 new cases Wednesday. And B.C. and Saskatchewan have both seen uncomfortably larger than usual case rates in recent weeks.

On Tuesday, Alberta chief medical officer Dr. Deena Hinshaw said she was worried people have grown complacent.
“This pandemic has been a long haul. And I worry that Albertans may be starting to tune the messages out. It can seem like old news, and many are tired of hearing this information,” she said. “We are concerned about the recent rise in cases we are seeing, also of concern is the younger age of people infected with the virus.”

More than half of all COVID-19 cases confirmed in Alberta in the past two weeks are people under the age of 40, and 30 per cent of the total new cases haven’t been linked to existing cases.

Hinshaw said the recent uptick in cases is a reminder that even though the province has been in various reopening phases since mid-May, people must remain vigilant by adhering to social distancing, washing their hands and wearing masks when necessary.

“This is a reminder that COVID-19 can spread quickly and cases can rise rapidly if we don’t all do our part,” she said.

B.C. also seeing rise.

This is obviously part of the W.H.’s  “if you can’t see the problem...then, there is no problem” strategy.

No wonder they're going down, they can’t, or won’t, do the right thing. This no way to run a business, never mind a government.

Trump's downfall is his inability to understand that not everything is a PR problem.

oh man

Today’s case is a male in his 30s from the Southern Health–Santé Sud health region. The investigation is ongoing and any additional information will be provided as needed once investigations are complete to inform people of any public health risks.

Fixed that for you.

In the 5 day average, Manitoba is at a 0.16% infection rate. Roussin says an infection rate of 2-3% would be cause for concern in MB. Manitoba needs to maintain social distancing, mask-wearing, hand-washing, etc to ensure they don't see a rise into dangerous territory.

Sigh..

Chuck Woolery Changes Stance On COVID-19 'Lies' After Son Tests Positive

In a previous post retweeted by President Trump, the former game show host accused the CDC of lying about the coronavirus. Chuck Woolery had a change of heart this week about COVID-19 after his own son tested positive for the coronavirus.

On Monday, the former game show host claimed all the news about the coronavirus were “lies” simply meant to keep the economy from recovering before November. The tweet was retweeted more than 36,000 times, including one time by President Donald Trump.

CBS reporter Catherine Herridge asked the president why he would promote something that suggested his own medical officials were lying.

“I didn’t make a comment,” Trump responded, according to The Hill. “I reposted a tweet that a lot of people feel. But all I am doing is making a comment. I’m just putting somebody’s voice out there. There are many voices. There are many people that think we shouldn’t do this kind of testing, because all we do, it’s a trap.”

By Tuesday afternoon, Woolery reversed his opinion about the threat of the virus after his own son tested positive for the disease. Woolery has since deleted his Twitter account and has not provided any medical updates on his son, according to Snopes.
