That ONE win.....that ONE loss

So Speedflex posted this in the "WF Bombers @ Riders" thread:

This is my ultimate revenge game as a fan. Who else remembers the 1972 Western Final? Who the teams were? Where they finished in the standings? The horrible way the Bombers lost that game? For us old timers with lonnnnnnnnng memories, just  how glorious will it be if we beat the Riders in their home park? In front of their fans? And how good will it feel for us to break their hearts???

The teams are the same but the standings reversed. They're hosting instead of us. Pressure is on them to win in front of their own fans in their House in front of a big crowd.  I've waited 47 years for this game. Please Bombers, wash the stench of that loss in 1972 away finally. FINALLY!!!

This has been brewing in him for 47 years, this match is not just a playoff game, not just a game against our most hated rival, not just another chance to get to the Grey Cup and end the streak, this is REVENGE.

This got me to thinking - what one win in Bomber history have you each cherished more than any other, and what one loss has burned worse than any other?

What is the pinnacle moment, the signature game that you will carry with you forever? Is it just a great moment, a historic victory, or does it carry something even more profound? (think Donovan Bailey winning the 100M gold in Atlanta - glorious moment, but because of what went down in Seoul in 1988 with Ben Johnson, made it all the much more sweet. Not just that he won, but that the whole country found redemption) What factors raised the win to an even greater emotional high than normal?

Likewise, what loss stings more than any other, and more importantly, why? I know a bit about the 1972 loss, mainly the end. This was the first time we'd hosted the West final since 1962 (and amazingly, the 1972 game is the last time we have hosted the West Final at all!). For anyone unfamiliar with the result and more importantly the circumstances, here is the synopsis:

Had a good lead heading into the half I believe, and Sask. tied it up and went for a game winning FG. I'll let Wikipedia pick it up from here -

This game was especially notable for its final play. The game was tied and Saskatchewan attempted a last-second field goal to win, or at least score a single. The kick missed wide, and was recovered by Winnipeg in the end zone. As they were unable to run it out, they punted. The Saskatchewan player who fielded the punt attempted to score a single (winning the game) by punting it through the end zone again, but was unsuccessful, and the punt was fielded by Winnipeg, who punted it out again. The Saskatchewan returner was tackled, ending the play and presumably the game, but a Winnipeg penalty for no yards negated the play and gave Saskatchewan another chance. The second Saskatchewan field goal attempt, with no time on the clock, was successful.

So I'd love to hear from folks what one win and/or one loss have you never let go of?

All 3 games were important for me. For different reasons as all the games told a different story. The Semi Final: Going into a Bomber wasteland called McMahon Stadium & beating the highly favoured

Love how you describe each win as being the other team losing versus the Bombers winning.  This might shock you but the reason the Bombers won both games against Calgary was because they were the bett

Here's the thing, you can actually start believing that the Bombers are good, really good, and not just lucky.

no kidding......Christ, I thought a Riders fan wrote Tracker's post...

This happens far too often that I can begin to describe,

All teams get breaks and brain farts and bad calls. There’s always a lot of what ifs and questionable reffing. Huge plays all around, by both teams. Why are we the lucky ones? Seems to me, no matter how you look at it, if you win 3 games in a row against very good opponents, you must be doing something right.

And that goal post thing? Who the hell knows what would have happened in the end zone. Caught pass, interception, great defensive play, dropped ball..etc. Why are we the lucky ones when one of our own players set it up by dropping a sure interception? I’m sure fans would have said what great concentration it was for Moore to catch that ball..But I also saw 4 Bomber defenders and 2 Riders in the end zone. Nick Taylor was right there.

I try not to bring up reasons when we lose so I’m certainly not going to downplay games when we win.

Scoring a TD there still wasn't securing the win either, it would have setup the extra point to tie and go to overtime, so there was still plenty of ball to be played even if they did score.  Everyone keeps making it seem like Sask would have won on that play, but the game still wouldn't have been over.

The point of my comment was that, in 29 years, we've had our hearts broken repeatedly by the Bombers, even when it looked like they were shoo-in winners and its hard to believe that suddenly we were going all the way. The Riders, despite where they finished were not that good a team.

Have you got a reason to be heartbroken in the 29th year?

Nope, but for many of the previous years, i felt like Charlie Brown trying to kick the football that Lucy was holding. She had yanked it away repeatedly, causing him to fall flat. She would then tell him to try again with promises that despite the past, this time would be different. He would hesitate, but with all manner of assurances, he would set aside his well-founded fears and charge at the ball, only to have it pulled away once again at the last moment.

except this time, Willie Jefferson showed up and slapped the ball out of her hands, told Charlie to hit the road and let Medlock do his thing!

At least the Bombers won finally. This is  a classic rant. Browns fans realizing 2018 was just a mirage.
