Solving Our Goaltender Problem

As much as we seem to have blossoming new forwards and a half decent defensive core I just don't see us going anywhere in the playoffs until we have an elite goaltender or at least a reasonable facsimile ....

By what method can we solve this dilemma?

Sometimes you're flush and sometimes you're bust, and when you're up, it's never as good as it seems, and when you're down, you never think you'll be up again, but life goes on.

wasn't Seto's thing after he left the jets? I can't rememember

No. He's been quite open about his time here. He would leave the rink and head to the bar and score illicit drugs.

And drink Jameson's straight, until he couldn't function.

Yes.

It's worth listening to the interview Devin gave to TSN1290. Quite the insight into his time here. I'll dig it up later.

http://www.thehockeynews.com/news/article/devin-setoguchi-rises-from-rock-bottom-to-earn-another-shot-at-the-nhl

It's quite the gut-wrenching read.

On his time in Winnipeg:

Quote

At first, Setoguchi welcomed the trade to the Jets, envisioning himself playing alongside Evander Kane and Mark Scheifele. But he wasn’t in good shape when he reported to training camp. Before long, his drinking became a bigger problem. “I was always kind of by myself there,” he said. “Going to all these new teams so many times, you can only get close to certain people.”

Players of a similar age such as Andrew Ladd, Bryan Little and Blake Wheeler all had family responsibilities, Setoguchi said. He’d go out with the younger guys on the team occasionally, but they didn’t drink, so he’d just have dinner with them, drink, and then they’d drive him home.

More often than not, however, Setoguchi drank alone. That added to a growing depression, which led to even more drinking. By his count, he missed three different meetings with the Jets because of it. He often headed to the bar in the casino across the street from the MTS Centre, Winnipeg’s home rink. Later, he learned the casino, like the team, was owned by True North Sports and Entertainment. Word likely got back to the Jets. “But at that point,” Setoguchi said, “I didn’t really care.”

Alcohol wasn’t his only problem. Over the years, there were times he abused Ambien, a prescription drug that helps players sleep after games. In Winnipeg, he was offered cocaine and did not turn it down. “I did a lot there where I would stay up all night till 6 in the morning, 7 in the morning, do a little bit, go to morning skate, go home, sleep for six hours and get up to play,” Setoguchi said. “I’m surprised sometimes I didn’t have a heart attack. Three or four months of that.”

Stuck in coach Claude Noel’s doghouse, Setoguchi welcomed the mid-season arrival of Paul Maurice as Noel’s replacement, but he was in no condition to play well. Those close to Setoguchi were aware his situation was getting worse in Winnipeg. Versteeg said he received calls from friends on the team, Ladd in particular. That’s when Versteeg became concerned about Setoguchi. Looking back, Setoguchi acknowledges he had been feeling the pressure to live up to the big contract he signed with the Sharks, and when he wasn’t producing, that contributed to the depression that led to the heavy drinking. “The NHL, it’s a high-stress job,” Versteeg said. “There’s a lot you go through on a daily basis that people don’t really see."

Its coke. sometimes you die.  you nevah do coke before?

sorry, couldn't resist.

I'm sorta lost right now...........is it Grant Fuhr or Devin Setogouchi that's going to solve the Jets goaltending problem......? Or do they just need a lot of cocaine? #Confused

Grant Fuhr was a career 3.38 & .887 so I dont think he'd help the Jets this year :P

I'd have to imagine he's here for the latter.

Why not both?

But seriously Jets, stay the **** away from Elliott, guy is useless and was propped up by a great D in St. Louis. Calgary was on their way to an embarrassment of a season with Elliott until Chad Johnson had one of his patented hot streaks and dragged them out of the basement. There is a reason that the Flames who have also been trying to solve their goal tending problems for a few years now didn't bother keeping the guy around. He'll have a few hot streaks (like he did for the Flames leading up to the playoffs) but he will also have his ice cold streaks (like he did for the Flames in the playoffs and to start the season) He is not the guy to solve anything for a team in the net.

Just because things didn't pan out in Calgary doesn't mean there couldn't be a different result with another team.

Besides Elliott, who else is worth considering that fits into the Jets needs?

Elliott will not be counted on to carry the load here.  So if he "has a few hot streaks" that should be enough.

Plus, its not just his play.  I think the Jets are hoping for someone that can be a mentor to Helle and provide advice, feedback and competition.

Elliott will be much better than Hutch. Thats what this is about.

Pav was better then Hutch but that did not matter.

Cocaine would speed up Helle's reactions to a puck right in front of him.

Yeah, and Thorburn's better than Peluso.  What's the point?

Yeah but Elliott has been unreliable everywhere he's been. Ottawa, St. Louis, Calgary. The numbers for that guy lie. You can't count on him and it's why everyone moves on with him. Expecting anything different in Winnipeg is just setting yourself up for disappointment. Elliott needs a strong D in front of him like the Blues had, and even they got sick of his ****.

Marginally. He was also grossly overpaid.

Well, they had Jake Allen in development. I wouldn't say the Blues "got sick of his ****"... It was simply time to move on.

Again, who would you rather the Jets get to address their goaltending needs? I don't think Elliott is as bad as you're making him out to be, but more importantly, what's the alternative at this stage for the organization? A stopgap who can play well enough, provide a veteran presence, and take pressure off a developing young goalie is what the Jets need.

I don't know, his stats tell me he's had more good seasons than bad

Would have meant couple more wins for sure and how many were we short again? 4.

How many days was it in between Hutchison wins?

A couple more wins still wouldn't have put the Jets into a playoff position. IIRC, they finished 7 points out, so they would've needed at least three more wins for a better shot.

No they don't, they say that he can have an inflated save percentage when he's got a great defensive team like St.Louis in front of him. Seriously have you watched the guy play? Cause the numbers are inflated plain and simple. I laughed when the Flames brought him in cause I knew their season would be **** with him, only thing that prevented them from being a lottery team was when Johnson came in and went on one of his unsustainable hot streaks.

You guys ran Pavelec out of town and the difference between Pavelec and Elliott is mostly that Pavelec doesn't have the extreme highs and lows that Elliott does.
