And now Wernick is out: https://www.cbc.ca/news/politics/wernick-election-panel-snc-1.5060834

Quote

Privy Council Clerk Michael Wernick is retiring as Canada's top bureaucrat, saying there is "no path" for him to have a "relationship" with the Opposition.

Wernick, a longtime public servant, has been heavily criticized in recent weeks for his involvement in the SNC-Lavalin affair.

In a letter to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, Wernick wrote that "recent events have led me to conclude that I cannot serve as clerk of the Privy Council and secretary to cabinet during the upcoming election campaign."

Under the STCA, anyone making a refugee claim in the United States or Canada can only do so in the first of the two countries they arrive in. The agreement is based on the assumption that Canada and the United States are both “safe” countries that refugees have no grounds to flee, and that they will get a fair hearing in both places.

But the agreement only applies to refugees arriving from the United States who try to make a claim at a designated Canadian port-of-entry. It’s this loophole that has prompted tens of thousands of people to walk into Canada ever since the election of U.S. President Donald Trump in 2016.

Another obviously transparent political move, to be sure. But what changes are made to the SCTA will be something to watch in the coming months, IMO.

AB calls election.

Hopefully that slimy ******* Kenney gets what he deserves. I don't like the NDP but I do like Rachel Notley... I was hoping the Alberta Party would give me an option but they don't seem to know their asses from a hole in the ground so who to vote for.... probably the incumbent who was one of the PCs who didn't join Kenneys band of angry right wing nutballs.

What's happening won't change my vote. Most people feel the same way. Bunch of bitter & disaffected Wild Rosers who are pissed they lost control of their party in the merger or candidates who didn't get the nomination so they're trying to destroy the UCP.  It won't work as people see through this sham. He'll win the election. Time to sweep the NDP out.

Sham? Jason Kenney would be right at home in the wild rose. He is the worst kind of crony capitalist plus he is a bigot on top of it. He is under criminal investigation for his leadership campaign... and you want this guy as premier? What's he going to do to help the economy? Rape the middle class to pay for his rich benefactors benefit that's what. You are entitled to vote for him if you want to, but how anyone can see the kind of person he is and willingly vote for his party I will never figure out.

Because in most prairie ridings you could run a dog and people would vote for it - as long as it's a Conservative dog.

Well, he'll win. He's no more of a bigot than Notley. Are there bigots in the UCP? Wouldn't doubt it just like there are progressives in the NDP that are bigots as well. If anyone is raping the middle class it's Notley with her carbon tax.  To me, this is a Jeff Callaway campaign issue. Notley went to bed politically with Trudeau & he outsmarted her. You can't trust anyone with the last name of Trudeau.

Whatever that means. I don't need your permission.

No, but someone who is willing to hand wave away the **** Kenney did to win the leadership of a party that really only exists because he wanted it to exist.... This is what you want for a premier? Because of a carbon tax from the NDP? We were getting either that or a provincial sales tax last time regardless so 6 of one half a dozen of the other.

Kenney gonna cut taxes on the rich and starve the beast, that sounds lovely for regular Albertans like you and I. But hey, we can just all bootstrap ourselves up right?

Kenney is garbage in a human suit, I am no NDP supporter but at least Rachel Notley has been a pragmatic leader, arguably the only one of her kind in Canada right now. We need more like her, not Jason Kenneys who are more concerned with making the rich richer and making sure that gay kids know that it's not OK to be gay.

That's your opinion & you're entitled to it. A lot of Albertans are hurting financially as is the Oil Patch & other industries & they will vote accordingly. She promised a pipeline in exchange for a carbon tax & it never happened. She promised jobs & it never happened. So, she has to be held accountable.  I don't think Notley is pragmatic at all. I think she is naïve & she trusted a snake in Trudeau. She's a dyed in the wool socialist. Always has been & always will be. She supported killing Northern Gateway. She was against Energy East. She supported Trans Mountain as it would be the only pipeline built. She has never opposed Bill C69 in the Senate & the moratorium on tankers carrying AB oil off the BC coast. She attended anti oil rallies before she was Premier as have others in her cabinet. She was naïve thinking an alliance with Trudeau would get things done. He knows he's lost Alberta so he doesn't care if we're Conservative or NDP. There are no seats waiting for him. So, he doesn't care what happens to her on election day.I have no doubt in the fall election that it will be a Conservative sweep here in Alberta.

Dude I am one of those hurting oil patch workers. Geoscientists were hit harder than anyone else in Calgary, but if you think Jason Kenney is going to magically make jobs reappear you are beyond hope of being reasonable.

Notley never promised a pipeline in exchange for a carbon tax, it was framed as showing good faith negotiating with Canada and it did a lot to get the general public in Canada on her side, problem was BC was never going to go for it without a massive pay out, and do you think Jason Kenney was going to give Alberta dollars to BC? I don't.

I say she is pragmatic because she put a lot of those socialist ideals behind her to work towards was is best for Alberta. That's the kind of politician I want. Someone who is about the common good as opposed to their ideology.

Again I don't trust the NDP party for ****, but I trust her a hell of a lot. Also, drop this alliance with Trudeau thing, that's a UCP talking point that is BS. She's been working for Albertans with whoever is willing to work with her including the federal government. Certainly a better option than launching into a red faced tirade like Kenney seems to think would be the answer.

Hell was just reading about the UCP candidate in my riding and she sounds like a truly awful person. Her biggest point of emphasis was how she wanted to roll back the legislation providing more support for people in domestic violence situations.

We are at a point where regressive governments are a bad idea. We need to continue to elect progressives. Haven't had a regressive government since Ralph Klein and we still need to keep going down that path. Massive oil royalties aren't coming back soon and the government needs to actually act like a government now.

I want Notley to lose in Alberta, and move to BC.  If the NDP here in BC would have her as leader, we'd be so much better off. Notley is a freaking dream compared to the dumb-dumbs we have here.

She bought a home in Kelowna from what I heard. If she loses the AB election I think she'll resign her seat & retire.

She still has to deal with the eco terrorists that inhabit the federal NDP. With Jagmeet Singh & John Horgan & God knows who else is running that party federally. Don't get enamored with her. She was against Northern Gateway & against Energy East. She hasn't been vocal at all against Bill C-69. She needed the Trans Mountain pipeline to help her win the provincial election.

I was not against any pipeline just on principle, but energy east wouldn't have helped much and northern gateway was doomed from the get go. You think transmountain has protests northern gateway made that look like a walk in the park. The bottom line is these pipelines needed built 10 or 15 years ago and neither provincial or federal conservative governments got it done. Everyone owns this.

There was a moment of tension in the House Thursday afternoon when the opposition charged that dozens of Liberal MPs had entered the chamber after one of the questions to be voted on was still being read.

As deputy Speaker Anthony Rota was still reading the question, Liberal MP Kevin Lamoureux rose to complain that he could not hear it — a move that gave some Liberal MPs time to make it to their seats. Opposition members, sensing that they might have the government cornered on a confidence vote, told Rota that those Liberal MPs who entered the House late were ineligible to vote.

After a prolonged and heated debate, Rota ruled that it was not up to him to monitor attendance and left it to the "honour" of individual MPs to decide whether they were eligible to vote when the question was read.

Rota read the question a second time, the vote went ahead and the government survived (several Liberal MPs rescinded their votes afterwards).

Liberals almost caught with their pants down, but able to lie their way out of it.  Seems to be a steady pattern with this bunch of corrupt losers...
