Canadian Politics

I didn't think we had a thread for this.

Is Trudeau this out of touch or does he just not care?

Former Calgary MP Rob Anders — a long-time crusader for lower taxes who helped found the Conservative Party of Canada — has been charged amid allegations of tax evasion during the time he held his seat, federal prosecutors have confirmed to CBC News.

Anders faces five charges laid earlier in September under the Income Tax Act with offences alleged between 2012 and 2018, as first reported by the National Post on Tuesday.

The former Calgary West MP held his seat from 1997 to 2015, first for the Reform Party and then for the Conservative Party.

He faces:

  • Three charges of making a false or deceptive statement for the tax years 2012, 2013 and 2014.
  • One charge of obtaining or claiming a refund to which he was not entitled or in amounts greater than to which he was entitled for the tax years 2012, 2013 and 2014.
  • One charge of evading payment of taxes between April 1, 2012, and June 30, 2015.

Prosecutor Tyler Lord said the Crown will proceed summarily — meaning if Anders is found guilty, the penalties are less than proceeding by indictment.

If convicted, Anders could face up to two years in jail and fines between 50 and 200 per cent of the evaded taxes.

Karma coming full circle for when he was the only MP to oppose granting Nelson Mandela honorary citizenship while simultaneously labelling him a terrorist and a communist...?

The Liberal government is spending $10 billion on infrastructure initiatives such as broadband, clean energy and agricultural projects — part of a plan to boost growth and create one million jobs after the pandemic pummelled the economy.

Trudeau said the three-year plan is expected to create 60,000 jobs.

The plan has five major initiatives:

  • $2.5 billion for clean power to support renewable generation and storage and to transmit clean electricity between provinces, territories and regions, including northern and Indigenous communities.
  • $2 billion to help connect about 750,000 homes and small businesses to broadband in under-served communities.
  • $2 billion for large-scale energy efficient building retrofits.
  • $1.5 billion for agriculture irrigation projects to boost production, strengthen Canada's food security and expand export opportunities.
  • $1.5 billion to speed up the adoption of zero-emission buses and charging infrastructure.

For some good news, Jim Carr is back, I hadn't heard.

Health ministry to cut 11,000 AHS jobs to save $600M annually after three years

Alberta plans to cut 11,000 Alberta Health Services jobs following a review in an effort to save $600 million annually.

No layoffs are anticipated for front-line clinical staff including doctors and nurses, Health Minister Tyler Shandro told Postmedia Monday, but his office confirmed around 800 jobs would be lost through attrition over the next three years. The bulk of AHS jobs lost — about 9,700 positions — will come from outsourcing jobs in laboratories, housekeeping, food services, and laundry. A minimum of one hundred management jobs will also be cut.

...

Outsourcing to private vendors will account for AHS cutting 2,000 laboratory jobs, 4,000 housekeeping jobs, 3,000 food service jobs, and 400 laundry jobs. The province said around 70 per cent of lab results are already contracted out, as is about 68 per cent of laundry.

So, not saving $600 Million, just outsourcing $600 Million to private companies for CEOs to make lots of money and the staff to get the shaft.

I should have said, ...UCP friendly private companies...

Jason Kenney and his doofus health minister are just out to **** everything up in the worst way possible.

I lost so much respect for 70% of this province for voting for a guy who told everyone he was going to do this crap once elected.

Leopards ate my face!

Kenney & his cronies never said they were going to go after doctors. No one... absolutely no one... voted for him to do that. Where in Kenney's campaign literature did it say he was going to cut physicians salaries & treat them like ****?? Check the campaign promises below & tell me where he said he'd do that. It never came up during the election campaign so get off your constant whining you keep droning on about the way Alberta voted. It's clear now that we were lied to. At the same time, no one gives a **** if your feelings are butthurt. If you don't like it you have a choice. You can leave & find another job in another province.

I didn't vote for Kenney to go after physicians or disabled people  on AISH (which are provincial disabilty payments) which is despicable. Then again, poor & disabled people can't defend themselves or fight back against the Kenney government so they're easy targets whereas Trudeau can fight back so the bully Kenney backs off when challenged.

A lot has changed since the provincial election. I voted for Kenney so Alberta would have a stronger voice when dealing with constitutional issues like equalization payments & the federal Liberal policies which clearly hasn't happened. That 70% (of which I am one) that you claim to hate are angry because we've been lied to. Turns out Kenney is a fraud, a snake as well as a coward in cowboy boots & a stetson. During the election he said he'd stand up for Albertans when it came to Ottawa which was another lie as he hasn't.  I won't be voting for him again. I suspect a lot of people won't especially with the doctors dispute. He'll be giving the province back to the NDP in 2 1/2 years.

It is all in there. Or did you think administrative bloat was actually true? Plus you had to look at what they said and how they acted outside if just what they wrote in their platform.

You voted for the leopards eating faces party and are now surprised they sre eating your face.

No, it's not all in there. You're as much of a liar as Notley or Kenney. It was never a part of the UCP platform & you know it. Tell me exactly where they say they're going after physician's pay like they have. Give me the the exact quote from the campaign promises. You can't because it isn't mentioned. They didn't have the guts to say they'd go after physicians & people on AISH because they knew they wouldn't get elected. Kenney & the UCP told a mistruth. Not a lie because they never mentioned it during the last campaign.

So just like your precious NDP who brought in a carbon tax immediately upon being elected in 2015. No mention of it during that campaign. It wasn't a lie but a mistruth. A carbon tax would have killed the NDP's chances to ever govern. They knew it so they never said a word until the throne speech opening their first legislative session in 2015. A coward's way to govern. Both parties. When Nutley was challenged by the media about the secret carbon tax she just shrugged her shoulders & went, "Oh well".  That is why she was thrown out as people never forgot how they were snookered by the socialists & I'm hoping same thing happens to Cowboy Kenney.

My precious NDP? Come off it. I have never in my life voted NDP anywhere. I simply don't subscribe to the team mentality some people do. The UCP were always going to attack education and healthcare becausr they are republican north. And rachel notley did some good things for this province at a  time when itnwas needed.

But people like you just thought that a change in government would make oil boom again so you didn't bother to do any critical thinking about the election.

Why would you ever trust Jason Kenney? The man cheated his own party to become leader! What did you think he was going to do to the rest of us?

Yeah, your precious NDP. Don't tell me you never voted for them as that is a lie. If it quacks like a duck, it must be a duck. You quack here louder than anyone.

Never ever voted NDP at any level. Just will not ever vote Jason kenney. I voted for the Alberta party last time. Rick Fraser was a very good candidate so I supported him. But ifngiven a choice between notley and kenney that's a no-brainer, as we are seeing now. Ucp just made 2 their health care something they officially support, pulling out of cpp is officially a party stance. Yeah you ucp supporters can get bent. You did this to us all through your ignorance and I won't let anyone forget.

That right hand by Kapp was so clean.... love it despite it being a major embarrassment to the CFL.
