US Politics

Lets see if we can keep this thread a little more civil.

I found this interview very interesting.  A lot of soft balls thrown at Trump, he explained his back pedalling on his more extreme issues as a lot of his claims as opening bids for negotiation purposes.  Which .. whatever .. I still think that those are insincere claims he used to get elected.

He does now come across way more presidential then he did prior to the election.  A lot of his noise, yelling, and rhetoric has been scaled back.

Do respect this one though:

Quote

Lesley Stahl: Are you gonna take the salary, the president’s salary?

Donald Trump: Well, I’ve never commented on this, but the answer is no. I think I have to by law take $1, so I’ll take $1 a year. But it’s a -- I don’t even know what it is.

Donald Trump: Do you know what the salary is?

Lesley Stahl: $400,000 you’re giving up.

Donald Trump: No, I’m not gonna take the salary. I’m not taking it.

Poor Trumpy. So desperately wants praise for solving this thing yet history will write about his ineptitude exacerbating the situation and it being a complete disaster.

Being a good leader isn't that hard, you simply listen to the smart people and let them make you look good. Trump though doesn't like not being the smartest guy in the room, which given how low a bar that is makes the entire thing a gong show.

Sad. Even sadder that so many people bought into the crap.

“The EPA uses this global pandemic to create loopholes for destroying the environment. This is a schoolbook example for what we need to start looking out for.”

The Environmental Protection Agency, headed by former coal lobbyist Andrew Wheeler, announced on Thursday a sweeping and indefinite suspension of environmental rules amid the worsening coronavirus pandemic, a move green groups warned gives the fossil fuel industry a “green light to pollute with impunity.”

Under the new policy (pdf), which the EPA insisted is temporary while providing no timeframe, big polluters will effectively be trusted to regulate themselves and will not be punished for failing to comply with reporting rules and other requirements. The order—applied retroactively beginning March 13, 2020—requests that companies “act responsibly” to avoid violations.

It is if your surname is Trump.

Add in that Canada is going to start paying 75% of salary for small and medium businesses too. Really impressed by the way they are stepping up and doing the right thing.

Yeah but 1200US is 2000CDN. Also not everyone in Canada is getting $2k.

Is it not the reverse in USA? Is it not for everyone?

Yeah. Plus the way I understand it in the US. It’s $1200 per individual and $500 per child. So a family of four can end up $3400.  One criticism is it’s a one time deal. But they could revisit that.

im curious how the Canadian payment will work.  Do you have to have a 2018 tag return?   So you have to have a registered business?  Because people they say it’s for will fall out of scope of those things.   It almost sounds like honour system.  Apply if you need it sort of deal.

and when this is over....what will the government do to make up the spending.   Honestly, adding a percent to the GST for a period of time wouldn’t bother me as a means to recoup it.

With your $1,200 USD, I hope you can afford the healthcare you lost when you lost your job.

There's a big difference when a first world country like Canada, England, Denmark can offer to give everyone cash on top of the gov't services you already get as opposed to the US, where they have red hats and guns.

Does anyone know what the real requirements are for this 2k/month in Canada?

The new Canada Emergency Response Benefit (CERB)

We will provide a taxable benefit of $2,000 a month for up to 4 months to:

  • workers who must stop working due to COVID19 and do not have access to paid leave or other income support.
  • workers who are sick, quarantined, or taking care of someone who is sick with COVID-19.
  • working parents who must stay home without pay to care for children that are sick or need additional care because of school and daycare closures.
  • workers who still have their employment but are not being paid because there is currently not sufficient work and their employer has asked them not to come to work.
  • wage earners and self-employed individuals, including contract workers, who would not otherwise be eligible for Employment Insurance.

The Canada Emergency Response Benefit will be accessible through a secure web portal starting in early April. Applicants will also be able to apply via an automated telephone line or via a toll-free number.

Yeah but they can't afford that because they're spending all their money protecting these countries! Slackers should have to spend on their own militaries! Rabble rabble rabble!

The one of many things that fascinates me about supporters of this man is when they tweet out they will vote for him no matter what. I can’t think of one person I would say that for, key part of that sentence being ‘no matter what’.

absolutely, if someone I had supported in the past acted like a dink I'd vote for someone else no hesitation. Elected officials are only accountable when voters hold them accountable. Voting for someone no matter what simply enables abuses of power to happen.

TV created him...  people were sold and then bought into this myth of him being a 'great business mind' - then after years, TV tried to say 'hey umm we weren't really telling the truth' and it was too late

Didn't he get impeached for something like this?

In shrinkology, we say that crisis bring out the best and worst in people- in other words, they become more like who they really are. This probably applies to systems as well, and we are seeing the true Donald Trump (as if we didn't know) and the true American political and healthcare systems and it is a damning judgement. What we have here is Canada is not perfect and probably never will be, but it is much, much better than the American healthcare system. All of the socialist, universal healthcare systems are faring infinitely better than those that are not universal. Cuba, for all its faults, has a higher life expectancy and lower natal mortality for both mothers and babies that the USA without all the expensive equipment and drugs available in the US.

Dr. Fauci claims that ii's possible a 100,000 plus could die from Covid 19 in the States, that's a lot of deaths from a hoax.
