Well, Bob Irving has been around to broadcast for 5 Bomber championships (yes I count the CFRW years because CJOB still did the pre and post-game, and Bob also covered them with CFN TV network) and even if Rod Peterson was around since the inception of the Riders he hasn’t matched that total.

As far as I know, no one person has more than 2 Saskatchewan Grey Cup rings (correction - rebus identified one person with 3, see his comments). Contrast that with the dozens of Blue Bombers (from 1958-62 and again from 1984-90) who have 3 or 4 and the potential for dozens more this year to get their 3rd. BTW, the Stampeders equipment manager just celebrated his 50th year and 1000th game with the club this past weekend. He has 6 Grey Cup rings and 12 appearances.

The player record is 7 (3 players - Jack Wesley, Bill Stevenson, and Hank Ilesic). The head coach record is 5 (5 tied - Wally Buono, Frank Clair, Hugh Campbell, Don Matthews, and Lew Hayman) As far as I can decipher from my hunting, the overall record is 10 (including those won as player, assistant/head coach, GM, or president) held by both Don Matthews (5 as an assistant with Edmonton in their 5 year streak, another 5 as head coach including 3 in a row with Baltimore/Toronto back-to-back) and Hugh Campbell (one as a Rider player, 5 straight as Eskie coach, 1 more as Edmonton GM alone, 2 more as both GM and President/CEO, and the final one just as President/CEO, all of the last 9 with Edmonton). Matthews also appeared in 7 straight Cup games from 1977-1983 as an assistant coach or head coach which as far as I can tell is a record. Buono has 7 rings total (two as a player with Montreal) Cal Murphy won 9 Cups as a coach or GM, including 6 in a row which I believe is the record (Montreal in 1977 as an assistant, then 1978-82 as the Eskimo OC). He of course won as Bomber HC in 1984, then as GM in 1988 and 1990. Made two more HC appearances in 1992 and 93 with Winnipeg and one as Sask. assistant coach in 1997 for a total of 12 appearances. Dan Kepley is next I believe at 8 Cup titles as a player and coach. Matthews and Buono have each taken part in 14 separate Grey Cup games (Buono has the record for most head coaching appearances at 9), Campbell holds the overall record from what I can see at 17 (3 with Saskatchewan as a player, 14 with Edmonton as coach or management). And now you know………the rest of the story.

3Down has been talking about this. Apparently with a win the Bombers would be the first CFL club ever to win 400 home games in their franchise history. Calgary was at 399 but the Bomber win two weeks ago denied them the claim to be first. And the Bombers play before Calgary this week. FYI Edmonton has been stuck at 397 home wins since 2019. -

All you need to worry about is them going 1-0 this week. The O’Shea way. -

I ran some of the permutations based on the East remaining head-to-head match-ups. If the Bombers win their next two games (taking them to week 12), they will guaranteed finish ahead of two of the East teams by season’s end, but will not clinch a crossover spot in week 12 unless Edmonton loses twice more by then - so it is possible they could clinch at 11-0 but dependant on specific factors not yet determined. The earliest guaranteed time they could clinch with no help from other teams is the Banjo Bowl if they win everything up to and including that game (go 13-0). Realistically, 13 wins should salt away a home playoff game if not the division title, but this is the mathematical clinch scenario. -

They can say it all the live long day. It could even be accurate, I wouldn’t care. Better than being the best 4-4 team ever. -

Absolutely this. “Dirty” vs “plays with an edge” is always subjective and most often based on fan allegiance, but O’Shea had quite the rep himself. https://www.cfl.ca/2007/09/16/o_shea_cfl_s_dirtiest_player_/ -

As has been stated before, 3DownNation is a bunch of fanboys. Other than Olivia Lawrence, there is no mention in any of the author bios that any of them actually went to journalism school. It would seem most of them have some connection to their home team and some sports related background (ex CIS QB, TSN Radio producer or weightlifter) and a bunch who have had their own podcasts. (Lind of like Zach here at MBB, who has now developed his own podcast and written for 3Down). So they borrow from others and re-frame the articles a fair bit, like going to fan pages, reading comments, and turning them into their “Insider info” gossip column. If you take it for what it is, a rah rah site that offers an exclusive CFL focus, then it is OK. But if you are expecting professional unbiased journalism, you will be underwhelmed and disappointed. -

Nice escape by MBT on that TD pass. Like he has been studying tape of Collaros.

I recall the story being that the royal blue colour was no longer manufactured so they went darker. Seems ridiculous but that is the explanation they went with. And it was KD Williams. Gold teeth as opposed to gold records (no harm, no foul, though). -

Two lines from that article sum up the entire problem with MLSE ownership: “You look at value creation and, you know, quite unfortunately, these teams are not worth that much money,” If his entire goal is making the Forbes list and not building an entertaining product, then he won’t bother to make the team better. No one gets rich owning a a CFL team, but they can turn a profit, albeit in the low millions and not billions. Tanenbaum would prefer to have a lousy NFL team because their valuation would be high, even if the on-field product sucks. . Terrible type of owner for fans to have to endure, because he’ll only care about his bottom line and not the fans who pay the freight and want success measured in wins and not the owner’s valuation. “Community owned teams in Edmonton, Saskatchewan, and Winnipeg are happy with the status quo” So the league’s most profitable and best attended franchises are not the model you want to emulate? Tanenbaum doesn’t want to match their kind of success because he sees their profits as too meagre, even though their bottom line is better than his right now. How about trying to match their success first and then looking to get better as an entire league rather than blow it all up because only you can’t get it right like they have? -

Even this guy would have been sick of those horns. -
Arbuckle’s two INTs in his last two drives may show why he has not gotten the chance to be a full time starter with 4 teams in the last 3 years. His decision to throw across his body into triple coverage on the first one was particularly dumb.

Per the Bomber website: Prohibited items include: No outside food with the exception of a single serving snack; No outside beverages; No outside alcohol, illegal drugs, weapons (or items deemed hazardous by security), incendiary devices. Anyone found with any of these items entering the facility will be subject to eviction from the game and/or arrest; No flasks, ice bags, ice chests, coolers or picnic baskets; No laser pointers, Frisbees, balls, boom boxes, rollerblades, roller skates, skate boards, bats, hockey sticks or poles of any kind; No musical instruments, air horns, powered megaphones, boom boxes, pets, obscene/indecent signs or clothing; Cameras with attachable lenses larger than 6” in length. I guess that means Bomber fans will just have to use their voices to make noise. Think we can manage that? -
Week 9 - The Champs at The Larks - GDT

Only one team has gone 9-9 and missed the playoffs - the 2018 Edmonton Eskimos. Mathematically, the Bombers could still finish 5th in the West this year, but the number of game scenarios that would have to line up to make that happen are so many that it is basically a fait accompli that they are in. -
Week 9 - The Champs at The Larks - GDT
TrueBlue4ever replied to JCon's topic in Blue Bomber Discussion
Ignoring the crossover possibilities, and if the Riders do not lose another game before they meet Winnipeg (meaning they beat Edmonton and put the Elks at 6 losses), AND if the Bombers are still undefeated by Labour Day, then the Sweep of Labour Day and the Banjo Bowl would give the Bombers 13 wins and the Riders 6 losses, so we would clinch a West playoff spot at that time.
