I disagree. In the CFL you are locked in for 2 years without NFL option. In the spring leagues you can play well and be signed in the NFL at any point of your contract. NFL likes to sign players when they are young. The XFL and USFL are better choices for many high draft picks who just need some pro film to gain NFL interest. OL, in particular, are always in high demand in the NFL and NFL teams are more willing to groom them over time if they are young. Sitting for 2 years in the CFL does not help that.
No i agree. If he's focus is on NFL only then you're correct. What I was trying to suggest is that the NFL is an unlikely destination for him. He's not as good as Desjarlais and he didn't make it. To optimize his non-NFL career earnings he's best being in the CFL now and eating through his entry level deal. If he was NFL bound I think he would have forced his way into the starting lineup last year like Desjarlais did his first year.

It happens more than you are suggesting and those are just recent examples from our team.
I have some level of openness to CFL players being allowed to sign in the NFL the day after the Grey Cup. There would be an advantage in terms of recruiting and you'd also increase the likelihood of CFL players trying the NFL and failing and having them back in time for CFL training camp the next year. The downside is that there might be some suggestion that players are playing not to get injured in the playoffs.

Yes you are correct. I had forgotten about that. Though I disagree that he'd still be in the usfl assuming his NFL interest dried up. As a Canadian that's the only reason to play down there right now.
In the USFL i bet he would have been able to start instantly as well. But for his realistic long term future its best for him to be here burning through his entry level deal so he can get to making decent coin here that he wouldn't make in the USFL and he's unlikely to be in the NFL.

Sanford is way over 300...think he was about 350 at the regional last year. But hit more than 8.5 feet on the broad jump so an athletic fat guy. Played both guard spots for UBC. Tackle length, guard core.
Maybe he found ozempik in the offseason.

Allow me to rephrase. We've brought several good placekickers into the CFL over the past few decades. We have not brought in and kept a decent placekicker since 1989. I hope Leggs is not another kicker to add to the list who we brought into the league and excelled elsewhere.

The point is being missed here. The point Im making is we have a long history of either giving up on kickers or losing them through other means.. Kicker's we didn't value highly at the time and then those kickers went on to have significant success with other teams. Leggs showed more than enough for a first year place kicker to warrant being the guy next season.

He's lucky it was blocked as he missed it otherwise. Then the shitshow would have really begun.
Castillo isn't Canadian.
Never said he was.
23 minutes ago, SpeedFlex27 said:Paredes was an impact kicker right away for the Stamps. His very first FG attempt he nailed it from over 50 yards. He always seems relaxed & focused when he kicks. Even when he misses. He just shrugs it off & forgets about it. As he is older now, he has trouble with any kicks over 50 yards. Not with accuracy but leg strength. He rarely kicks anything past 45 yards now.
He didn't impress with the bombers. At least not enough to give him a chance. The point im making is that we gave up on all these kickers only to have them excel on other teams. Let's not make the same mistake again.

Sure bring in some competition for leggs. But let him keep the job if he looks any sharper then last season. We let go Canadian kicker Lirim Hajrullahu Paradis, Castillo, Maher. Not every kicker is an instant success and his numbers aren't bad for this stage of things.

I've heard it's the League rather then the players, that doesn't want them published because it will make the CFL look less than stellar compared to other leagues.
The MLS publishes salaries and they have plenty of players making less than 70k. I think its time for the CFL to reconsider. The CFL could have a lot more chatter if fans could discuss the exact salary implications of each move a team makes and analyze deeply how one team spends its money compared to another.

Whatever. You need that much to feed your ego or are you just fragile? I'm glad I was wrong.
This was never about my ego. You lambasted me for stating what was quite obvious. The league was not going to just let Montreal fold. But perhaps I was moreso lambasted for daring to disagree with you.

What do you want me to say?? "Oh damn, they didn't fold the team???" Be glad they did what they did. In 2019, it cost the Bombers & every other CFL team a half millionv each. How many teams can afford that?
how about... "Im glad i was wrong"

It would be nice if a developmental QB had the athleticism to fill this role.

There's been a lot of talk about players who are getting older and will likely regress. I agree with most of that however statistically i think Jefferson and Jeffcoat will actually have better seasons this year because I think Winnipeg will blow more teams out this year and they will face more obvious passing situations.
I thought it would be interesting to take a look at who are good candidates to elevate their play. Younger players who are coming into camp with more experience and confidence.
Geoff Gray - He's got a full year as a starter under his belt now. I think he gained confidence during the season and even showed some feistiness more than a few times down the stretch.
Kolankowski - Started a bunch of games last season comes into camp with confidence and a legit shot at starting.
Agadosi - If only he can stay healthyOliveria - He's probably my top choice on this list. It took him a good chunk of the season to learn how to relax and be himself and was one of the better runningbacks in the CFL down the stretch. He comes into camp this year knowing he knows what he needs to do and I think he's gonna have a great season.
Schoen - Might not put up the numbers he did last year in a slightly reduced role but he's going to be better coming into camp after mastering the waggle last season.
Marc Llegghio - Please let me be right about this! Pleny of room for upside
O'Leary-Orange - I think he has a chance to be an upgrade over Wolitarsky as he is more athletically gifted. Needs to stay healthy.
Demario Houston - was playing elite corner until he got hurt.
Honorable Mentions
Dru Brown, Liam Dobsen, Ricky Walker, Drew Richmond, Eli, Les Maruo, Malik Clements
Wildcards
The newcomers. The pool of talent is thinned out with both the USFL and XFL gobbling up import talent. I hope we are still able to find the same level of talent this offseason as we have in the past.

Anything can happen in one game. The bombers didn't play their best game and they lost in the Grey Cup by one point. The Argos have a long way to go to be at the bombers level. I don't think they have what it takes to put of the same number of wins as Winnipeg this season even playing in the east. When you're a top caliber team year after year it ends up being a challenge to sign a whole lot of free agents. Despite that the bombers arguably landed the biggest fish in the market. The key to getting better is recruiting and developing talent. This team is already quite good on paper. If we discover the same level of rookie talent we typically do this offseason this team is scary good. I think we made the right choice in terms of who to let go. We have depth coming up at center and Couture never played that many games last season. Jeffcoat im not the biggest fan of because he's the most undisciplined player on the team and is injury prone. Would love for us to fine a rookie who can push him.

That would be nice. At that point would the bombers need to sign a single free agent?

TORONTO — The Canadian Football League (CFL) has released a statement on Tuesday morning about the Montreal Alouettes.
The ownership of the Montreal Alouettes franchise has been transferred to the CFL. Mario Cecchini has been appointed the team’s interim President and will lead the management of the organization’s day-to-day business operations under the direction and supervision of the league office. General Manager Danny Maciocia continues to focus on the important work of building the team’s roster for the upcoming 2023 season.
The league has initiated an accelerated and formal sales process, which is being led by its investment banking partner, Park Lane, a leading sports-focused advisory firm whose clients include major league sports properties around the world.

I don't want to make anybody our Scottie Pippen, all the deal did was make him disgruntled.
After 6 championships. It's a different situation because it's really just one season of feeling underpaid rather than a 7 year deal taking away the prime earning years of Scottie Pippen. Who knows what Schoen is thinking? Maybe he prefers to play out his option and then hit free agency for top dollar.

OT is not a place I wanna cheap out. When Stan and Yoshi pull the pin I am hopeful that Walters will swing for the fences and get the next best OT available in FA. That being said, maybe we uncover an absolute stud or two through recruitment but even if we do I would want them extended ASAP. If we are looking to replace at league mins in will be in the LBer, DL, secondary, and receivers...or a move to a cheaper IMP RB if need be.
I don't want to cheap out there either. But I feel that we should be able to recruit and replace from within. We are doing pretty good elsewhere in finding import talent that is new to the CFL. You don't want to rely on free agency.

I have a feeling that once his NFL window closes we will be discussing extension with him. Nothing immediate but certainly before the season ends.
Could be a situation that once they know more about how much cap space has been created by injuries ect they can give him a bonus on this year's cap with an extension. I would think that there will be some more significant change for the 2024 season to fit Lawler's extra 40k or so and potentially another 100k for Schoen. Potentially one of the tackles retiring and replacing with league minimum would resolve most of this.

Walters would be dumb to let him play this year at his rookie salary when he could get a contract extension. Less of a question of what is fair and more about what is smart IMO.
Unless the plan is to take advantage of this opportunity to build the best possible team for this season to win the Grey Cup. He can be our Scottie Pippin.

this....can e a DI or a non starting import....you just switch one of the nationalized guys on offence....or defense ...whatever side of the ball the injury took place to a National to maintain your ratio....you still need to have the ratio maintained as to how you are going to use your nationals you as listed before the game...how many on offence and defense tho.
I like the rule...rewards teams for continuity, and improves the quality of the game
Bombers should hire me to play on the defensive line. Pretty sure id get hurt on the first play of the game.

Full complement of draft picks. Been a while since we had that.
Based on our depth across the board I think we basically pick the best player available through the draft. With perhaps a slight bias towards a receiver and defensive line.
I really need to wrap my head around the exact nuances of the new nationalized import rules. The idea is that a nationalized import can sub in for an injured canadian starter. Does that mean that Bighill has no value as a nationalized import since he's already starting? Does it only have value when a designated import is a nationalized import? Or can you essentially bring in any DI to replace Thomas if he gets injured so long as you have one or more nationalized imports on the starting defense?

On the subject of our offensive line. I could see O'Shea making Eli wait his turn even if he is the best center in camp. I think it could tick off some players who got jabbed against their desire for the team if Eli could take a year off and then come right back and get a starting job on day one.

Im never against drafting a quality offensive lineman if they are the board still at the rate we lose them to other cfl teams. But if we could get a difference maker on the defensive line that would be ideal. Maybe we can get some more help from the global draft. We'd done better than anyone in this regard and 5 out of the first 10 globals who were invited to the combine are defensive lineman.
