I don't want to make anybody our Scottie Pippen, all the deal did was make him disgruntled.
After 6 championships. It's a different situation because it's really just one season of feeling underpaid rather than a 7 year deal taking away the prime earning years of Scottie Pippen. Who knows what Schoen is thinking? Maybe he prefers to play out his option and then hit free agency for top dollar.

OT is not a place I wanna cheap out. When Stan and Yoshi pull the pin I am hopeful that Walters will swing for the fences and get the next best OT available in FA. That being said, maybe we uncover an absolute stud or two through recruitment but even if we do I would want them extended ASAP. If we are looking to replace at league mins in will be in the LBer, DL, secondary, and receivers...or a move to a cheaper IMP RB if need be.
I don't want to cheap out there either. But I feel that we should be able to recruit and replace from within. We are doing pretty good elsewhere in finding import talent that is new to the CFL. You don't want to rely on free agency.

I have a feeling that once his NFL window closes we will be discussing extension with him. Nothing immediate but certainly before the season ends.
Could be a situation that once they know more about how much cap space has been created by injuries ect they can give him a bonus on this year's cap with an extension. I would think that there will be some more significant change for the 2024 season to fit Lawler's extra 40k or so and potentially another 100k for Schoen. Potentially one of the tackles retiring and replacing with league minimum would resolve most of this.

Walters would be dumb to let him play this year at his rookie salary when he could get a contract extension. Less of a question of what is fair and more about what is smart IMO.
Unless the plan is to take advantage of this opportunity to build the best possible team for this season to win the Grey Cup. He can be our Scottie Pippin.

this....can e a DI or a non starting import....you just switch one of the nationalized guys on offence....or defense ...whatever side of the ball the injury took place to a National to maintain your ratio....you still need to have the ratio maintained as to how you are going to use your nationals you as listed before the game...how many on offence and defense tho.
I like the rule...rewards teams for continuity, and improves the quality of the game
Bombers should hire me to play on the defensive line. Pretty sure id get hurt on the first play of the game.

Full complement of draft picks. Been a while since we had that.
Based on our depth across the board I think we basically pick the best player available through the draft. With perhaps a slight bias towards a receiver and defensive line.
I really need to wrap my head around the exact nuances of the new nationalized import rules. The idea is that a nationalized import can sub in for an injured canadian starter. Does that mean that Bighill has no value as a nationalized import since he's already starting? Does it only have value when a designated import is a nationalized import? Or can you essentially bring in any DI to replace Thomas if he gets injured so long as you have one or more nationalized imports on the starting defense?

On the subject of our offensive line. I could see O'Shea making Eli wait his turn even if he is the best center in camp. I think it could tick off some players who got jabbed against their desire for the team if Eli could take a year off and then come right back and get a starting job on day one.

Not wrong. To be fair I think he’d probably be a really good guard. Just teams seldom roll with imp guards.
Riders might be one of those teams that have to resort to 3 americans on the offensive line.
Winnipeg has so much respect right now. Riders probably just signed him thinking that if Winnipeg kept him around he must be decent.

Not sure why the Riders would sign Couture considering Dan Clark is still an option

Just imagine a receiving core featuring demski, Schoen, and Lawler with Collaros at qb.

It's the going rate for a frontline CFL starter. Harris at 500 isn't a bargain, but it isn't outrageous.
Harris just wanted to go somewhere where his cheques would cash.
I just don't get it. Weineke is an american receiver who has never had 1000 yards in a season and had less than 600 yards receiving last season. This is nuts. At these prices Lawler should be targeting half a million a season. The only thing i can really think of is that Harris could have commanded more but he left some money on the table with a guarentee they would also land Weineke and Lewis.

It will be interesting to see if Montreal actually uses its cap space or go way under the cap to save money. Maybe they are tanking for Kurtis Rourke.
-
Im trying to figure out how we have money for Lawler. We should have still traded a 6th round global pick for him at the deadline just so we could offer him guaranteed money on the 3rd year.

This league is run by a bunch of ass clowns. How can you be surprised?
This is what i was getting at. You're affected by your view of Ambrosie. And im not a fan of him either. He's a bit of a beta. But that's a separate issue from the subject of whether the league would fold Montreal or float them for a while and find a new owner.

Herb Zurkowsky says the league is broke. Since the pandemic & the lost season in 2020 & the shortened season teams don't have the $$$ to prop up a team. WQhere have you been the last 4 years?
Herb has made a lot of predictions over the years. The cost of losing Montreal is immense as it is written into the TV deal with TSN that the league would lose a significant amount of the revenue if it loses either Montreal or Toronto. I believe it would be more costly to lose that revenue then prop of Montreal for a while while they search for a new owner. Plus they are adding new revenue likely around 4-5 million a year from the US TV deal.
Any think of the lost money when the league has to pay Winnipeg to move to the East Division again.

Do we have clarity as to when Schoen's nfl window closes? I keep hearing that it is Feb 9 but I believe Tait said the same day as CFL free agency starts.

How / Why would someone offer Dom Davis anything? I am not sure if I like or am shocked that not once have I seen Dakota Prukop mentioned. I mean even with the GC brain fart he still gets more done that Dom Davis...
I guess BC is looking at running a offense designed for a dual threat QB and Dom Davis is someone who could continue a gameplan designed for their starter should he get injured.

If the Als organization chronically hemmorages money it won't be easy at all. Why would anyone buy a team that chronically loses $4 million a year? You have to ask yourself why.... And the 2 estate lawyers aren't going to let that situation go on for long. Spiegel's kids want their inheritance. There's no money to run the team right now other than pay the bills, it seems. Accorfdng to Herb Zurkowsky of the Montreal Alouettes unless a prospective owner steps forward very soon the team will fold. Thge CFL can't afford to prop up a team after Covid. You seem to think the whole process to find a solid owner with deep pockets will be easy hence my Travolts Get Shorty gif.
I just don't see the league folding the team. They could more then cover the losses with the new money coming from the US TV deal while they search for a new owner. They aren't going to let this team fold when the fanbase is there and league revenues are growing to a point where a team like this under good ownership can break even or post a profit.

Do you read what I write before responding. I said they are doing reasonably well with bad ownership. All they need is good ownership. What are you going on about?
16 hours ago, Jesse said:Well, there’s the rub isn’t it?
Correct. The problem they had this time around is the man with the money passed away and that changed everything. It seems as though they've found reasonable ownership in Edmonton and bc. It should be easier right now to find a good owner for Montreal coming off a moderarly successfull season.

Colin, just what have you been drinking today?? "Let's not let our hatred of Ambrosie cloud our judgement????" Wow, WTH??? The Alouettes aren't in good shape. They're hemorraging money losing in the millions. They only average 13-16,000 per game with season ticket sales of about 4-5,000. They've been in trouble financially since the last Als dynasty ended after 2009.
The league doesn't have the finanacial resources to support the teaam like it did in 2018-19 because of the pandemic, No one is rushing in to buy the team. Read the stories in the media that are starting to pop up. More & more people are beginning to realize the team may fold. And it's the CFL's fault as it all could have been avoided. The decision to bring in a 90 year old owner was both Ambrosie's fault & the BOG's.
They average 17,683 last season despite gongshow ownership. This team isn't on the verge of folding. They just need solid ownernship.
1 hour ago, wbbfan said:Those guys and the top guys won’t get that money this year though. I think teams see those as the mistakes they are now. I’d actually rather over pay an ol than a wr. No other ni ol available is remotely as close to as good as desjarlais. You can have a meh wr. A meh ol can kill a line qb rb and offense.
A ni starter is worth less now too with the nationalized stuff imo. I think that money is good for a ratio breaking ni who plays like an imp or brings a lot of versatility.
For me demski might never have a 1k season, but he stretches and freezes the defense soo much with the run threat, is such an amazing blocker and a hard runner with the ball I have no issues with him at 180k. The defense needs to account for demski every single play. Pre snap, again post snap, and then even when he doesn’t get the ball head on a swivel cus he puts 100% into blocking for his team mates whistle to whistle.
You don’t need to track gittens. You don’t game plan and practice to counter him.It all depends on whether he chooses to stay in Winnipeg. There are bad teams who have to overpay to get talent like the Riders and the Redblacks. There's a team out there that will pay him quite a bit of money. But he'll have no expectation of playoff money and might get used and abused like Lawler did.
