  1. So the season may very well come down to the capability of Mcguire. We needed to pick a qb and go with them. It would have been great had there been assurances that Arbuckle or MBT were going to be available but ultimate we couldn't really consider one of those options as risk of losing both Nichols and Collaros.
  2. Its often talked about how Zach Collaros missed the majority of this season. And in reality he did. But do we really know at what point he was healthy to play? It seems like if he stayed in Toronto they wouldn't have played him at all and were just sitting on him healthy in order to avoid his cap hit. Magically right when the bombers got him he was 100% ready to go and looked totally fine out there.
  3. Well.. Im looking at two players in the same situation. If Toronto is going to prioritize Nichols over MBT then it would make sense for both team. However, I think Toronto would be foolish to do that.
  4. Personally I would not pay him starters money if I’m Toronto. I would sign mbt and Nichols. But with feb 2nd (tampering window) coming up pretty soon here Toronto will also have the chance to speak to Arbuckle unless Ottawa signs him. If Ottawa misses out on Arbuckle I could see them actually spending quite a bit to get Nichols.
  5. It’s unlikely to happen. But let’s say Toronto was interested in Nichols and wanted to get that done early so they can know where they are at heading into free agency it would make a degree of sense. But yeah it won’t happen. It wasn’t intended as an overly serious comment.
  6. Let me know when your life no longer revolves around me. Getting more than a little creepy.
  7. Not sure how much of a difference it makes in terms of the cap. I mean. If he gets a significant injury you put him on the extended injury list and save a bunch of cap space. The key is how much of it was paid out in a bonus. Let’s say he had signed and half was playtime bonus you’d still have to budget for that playtime bonus being paid out until such time as he got injured.
  8. Good move. Now can we trade Nichols to Toronto for MBT and get him locked up as our backup?
  9. I’m saying we will find out what he’s made of.
  10. Im not looking at the person when I say he seems like the type. I'm looking at the big picture. He's a guy who spent significant time in the NFL and he was good enough to be an NFL return guy before he was met with misfortune. He's currently #2 or #3 on the returner depth chart in Winnipeg. That's all i'm looking at here. He's a candidate to give up. He will have to come into camp and show some things he wasn't capable of last year in order to have a chance to crack the roster. Save for an injury Grant is the primary return guy. Am I wrong?
  11. Love to be proven wrong but Whitehead seems like the kind of guy who might not show up for camp. Guys with that kind of NFL pedigree come to the CFL thinking they will dominate immediately. When that doesn't happen and they see a growing competition for their roster spot they have to make a decision to either fully engage in the CFL in the offseason and train harder than they've ever trained and think of new ways to make things happen in training camp. Sometimes these guys decide it's not worth it them. I hope Whitehead has the right attitude about things and has a breakout season. I'm just not holding my breath right now.
  12. As a punt returner I would prefer Nelson to Whitehead. I feel like Nelson has shown the ability to adapt to the CFL more quickly than Whitehead and one of the big adjustments for a returner is in the fielding of punt returns. In the NFL there's rarely a tricky bounce that you have to deal with. In the NFL if anything seems dangerous whatsoever they just let it go due to the field position being less of the game. In the CFL there is a lot to gain by running in to a collection of defenders and just getting your hands on it to draw the no yards call. In any event Nelson just seemed to be further along in his understanding of the CFL game. Whitehead still has upside but he's going to have to come to camp as a CFL vet this season with a full understanding of how to take advantage of the CFL game.
  13. Charles Nelson has legit upside even if he isn't really needed in the return game anymore. He can always fill in on returns as needed and has the potential to be a pretty good starting receiver. Bringing him back is a no-brainer especially if the XFL is having a material impact on the quality of rookies that are available to CFL teams.
  14. No.. Im fine with Hall. I do think that most of the changes that helped the defense to thrive came while Hall was away and were implemented by Glenn Young. I'm confident that Hall can continue the momentum the defense built last year. I'm just looking at a situation where Hall may very well be looking at retiring soon so I would have preferred to go with the younger Glenn Young who I have the utmost confidence in.
  15. Based on what I've seen from the guy I'd say he's already a much more capable passer than Streveler. He has serious upside to be a starting QB in this league. When you have a guy like that you need to elevate them and give them opportunities.
  16. Its a shame but we've lost Glenn Young to the Argos. I would have preferred to see Ritchie Hall retire and give the job to Glenn Young.
  17. We never actually had Durant though. And we survived the situation. Believe me there is no doubt in my mind that Winnipeg would have an Alex Ross level of guy (at the very least) in camp to compete with McGuire. I just don't seeing that type of guy beating McGuire out for the job. A guy like Brandon Bridge would actually have some value as he is somewhat serviceable as a stop gap and can get onto the roster as a Canadian and he's a pending free agent. With the new changes coming to CFL rosters I could really see Canadian QB's who can be described as being "somewhat serviceable" as having value. They can easily fit on the roster and allow teams to develop a younger American QB with upside. If you're looking for an Alex Ross type guy to have in camp there are plenty at or above that level. David Watford, Dakota Prukop, Logan Kilgore, and Danny O'Brien come to mind.
  18. It would be unsettling due to the injury history of Zach (assuming he's the guy). However, it's not really that abnormal. He's got the same amount of CFL experience in terms of being in the league for a year as Dane Evans and Nick Arbuckle had going into last season. You can't always have two proven winners. The teams that will remain competitive long term will be able to identify who can be a solid replacement at QB even if they haven't proven it on the field yet. If there is an opportunity to sign an experienced backup such as MBT or Nichols I would take it. But id rather designate the reps to a promising young QB like McGuire then a player that proved they couldn't get it done like Jennings or Franklin. I'm willing to bet there are going to be experienced qb's floating around should an injury arise with many teams likely to go down to two quarterbacks. Or two quarterbacks and a third cheap rookie on the practice roster. Think about it. Two years ago we had Matt Nichols and an unknown rookie backup out of a small school as our backup. In this scenario Winnipeg would have two qb's with grey cup rings and neither of them rookies.
  19. I agree with the decision to focus on Collaros. Neither of these options are a pillar of health. However, Collaros is hands down the more gifted of the two. He's a risk to get another injury or a concussion again but he showed that with all his injuries in the past he's still very physically gifted when healthy. And he won the Grey Cup. Nichols has IMO lost some zip on his passes and has zero mobility at this point in his career. I would consider looking at MBT as a backup should he be available.
  20. My understand was that he didn't want to be camp fodder which he would have been. His agent encouraged him to come up to the CFL and work his way towards a future shot at the NFL. You can bet that if there's a team who seriously wants gimmick QB like the Saints have in Hill and were offering a decent bonus to Streveler to compete for that role he'd be interested.
  21. If start with "Mu" and ends with "mba" we should pass!
  22. Possibly the kind of guy who will still be drafted as a potential player to pay off down the road once his NFL opportunities are gone. So there is a guy like that who's heading to the NFL now. But when you look at the France lineup you've got 3 guys who went to the NFL already and a now in a position to try the CFL. I also keep hearing that the Mexican calibre of play is getting pretty good but I've yet to see an intriguing mexican prospect. Hopefully there are some gem's this year.
  23. Yeah.. It truely has mostly to do with trying to increase revenues and interest in the CFL more than it has to do with upgrading talent. They could always add more americans if the only motivation is talent. The only place where I see it being more about upgrading talent is at the Canadian College level. Less Canadians are playing football and eventually that is going to downgrade the Canadian product. So they are allowing for global players to come up to Canadian College and eventually count as a Canadian.
  24. Seems strange to me that a guy who was a Senior in 2018 and only recorded 1 sack would be going to the NFL in 2020.
  25. I was happy to read Walter's comments on how much work the Global Scouting is. I mean its too bad its so much extra work but I'm happy that he doesn't view the work as optional. There was a time before Walters took over where Winnipeg wasn't even willing to turn over every stone to find a helpful Canadian player. I remember talking to a CFL agent at that time when Winnipeg had serious snapping problems and they weren't even willing to go an look at a decent young snapper who was living in Winnipeg who ended up signing with a different team. Like they wouldn't even put in the effort. Now Winnipeg is clearly of the mindset that if there is going to be global roster spots they will do whatever it takes to maximize the talent they will be bringing in for those roles. Its refreshing and no wonder Winnipeg ended up with the best global player from last year.
