GDT - Little Kitties @ Blue Bombers
Old Bomber Fan replied to JCon's topic in Blue Bomber Discussion
It is interesting that there are several "new" OC and DCs in the league many who have played the game and many we have overlooked because: 1. we have "proven" coordinators who have been in the league for many years and 2. we did not pursue new names for some reason other than 1. Seems to me many here wanted Kahari to be our OC a couple of years back but that didn't happen. We had both Dickensons I think at one point and both were let go, now both head coaches. We need a new outlook and game plan on both sides of the ball. MOS is comfortable in his skin because he has two old coordinators whom he thinks know their way around the CFL. Sad but the game has moved on and left them behind. It is refreshing to see people want a change up in coordinators, I been saying that, to much displeasure of many here, for many years. MOS I believe the second most tenured coach in our history, is barely above, if he still is, in win/losses and yet he refuses to change coordinators. Is it because he fears for his job if a young upstart comes in and shows him up? I don't know that answer. I only know that we will not go anywhere with what we have. As I mentioned in another thread, we have been told our talent has increased each year but our coaching staff has not changed yet we have the same results. That must say something! As for Buck Pierce being our OC, I'm not so sure. Rational; I have watched our QB and receivers throughout the past two years and have seem little improvement in their abilities at their respective positions. They obviously have talent otherwise they would not be on the team but seems to me they have not progressed. I only have to look at Calgary, Sask, Hamilton to see how QBs are developed and I honestly don't see that here. So can he get results as an OC rather than a QB coach, I'm not sure. But with that said there are lots of good offensive minds out there who may be recent players or students of the game that could certainly do better than our current OC. They may not be successful in all the stats as we currently are but there is an old saying "stats are for losers" and we sure fit that description well! -
After watching last night's game, I am really more concerned than ever about Lapo, Hall and MOS. I don't think it will matter what QB is put in, Streveler with his ability to run and throw medium to short passes, McGuire with his ability to throw in the pocket or whomever, I don't think any will be successful. Even Nichols as successful as many here think he was within the system will never be successful because of the restraints that are put on because of the system LaPo implements. Yes our offense leads the league in many categories but that does not translate into wins, in fact it translates into losses with his don't lose philosophy late in games. On the defensive side as has been mentioned before, the bend don't break philosophy is proving to be problematic in many ways and again while it may sustain the team for most of the game it fails when needed most. And then there is MOS, the what second most tenured coach in Blue Bomber history and is barely above if above the 500 mark in wins and losses. He perchance for loyalty beyond the pale is disturbing and counter procuctive. The lack of preparation (referring to grooming QBs) is not unlike what we have seen before in Bomber town but why continue down a non productive path? And personal selection is yet another which I put on all of the above along with Walters. It has become painfully obvious, especially against eastern teams, that our secondary is absolutely terrible. Our safety is very vocal but cannot play to the level of his talk. Our defenders are great chasing the receiver but never look for the ball and are constantly beaten. They play back far too much from the line....is this because they are afraid the receiver will beat them.....well they do and with regularity. I find it difficult to rationalize that this is entirely the player but rather the paly design.. If for example a player is playing too far from the line why isn't someone telling them to move up or coaching on the sidlines. Why are adjustments not made at half time? That to me is coaching 101. And has anyone mentioned the drop off of play our start middle linebacker? He seems to be running all over the place while leaving the middle of the field wide open hence in the past two games huge completions in front of our great safety with Bighill nowhere in sight! There are problems in Bomberville whether we want to believe it or not and it is not all on Streveler or the players. Yes they did not execute well but boy our play calling and coaching is not good and will never get us to the Grey Cup. I believe that to be a reality even though I hope I am wrong

Looked like players were going through the motions and mos looked defeated. If this is right then he should be having closed door meetings with his coaching staff. Ever since returning from bye week these guys seem uninterested. Maybe Walters has to have a meeting with the players.....pick it up or pack it up! -

Really can’t fault Streveler totally. Lapo play calling terrible as usual...down 3 possessions and we are throwing 7-10 yd passes! Interesting that regardless of who the QB might be the plays are the same...says it all yet nothing from management -

Centre of the dense big problem no coverage and a VERY weak safety bad -
My only comment would be hopefully the bombers continue to groom mcguire into a legitimate back up. I liked what we saw in the preseason with him so now they have to get him a lot more reps at practice...just in case

Mark I appreciate your comment and I may have been off on his second year stats. The point I was making is he is progressing downward not upward. The majority of his goals and points, I believe come on the power play, he has a reputation from a youngster to the pros of being for myself first and the team second...he even announced it loud and clear when drafted second to Matthews. of course you need goal scores on your team but i would certain argue that a team of 17 players playing for one another rather than a team of 17 players playing for themselves will always prevail over the latter. I can’t help but believe and I have been in many “rooms” that a person displaying the me first attitude that Laine has is a blister under the skin that grows until it bursts. Perhaps that what we saw last spring who knows. I do know that no one in that room is going to wash dirty laundry outside of it. Just my opinion I will also go out on a limb and say he will sign a bridge deal for 2 years at around 6.5 while Connor will sign for 6 years at 7 per year. After two years or sooner Laine will be traded. Just my thoughts right or wrong

I believe we have the talent to beat Hamilton relatively easily. Now I don’t mean ease in that sense but rather if they play as they should with the talent they have it should not be difficult. Now with that Saadi if the game plan is flawed on both sides of the ball or we do not adjust at half time as every team we play does we will not win. So don’t overthink the situation Lapo, don’t back off too far Hall and don’t stop trying to score.! Plan to our strengths not our weaknesses and focus on execution and all will be fine. NOW let’s see what happens

I believe it has been said many times before but to repeat you play to win not play to not lose there is a huge difference. It doesn't mean you have to run up the score but you do have to play call to move the ball and retain possession. Should you score a TD per quarter or a field goal here or there is different than kicking a 3 point field goal with less than a minute remaining up by 20. There is a difference and I have a hard time believing professional football players cannot grasp the difference between being level headed yet fired up and level headed and relaxing. Momentum as has been stated so often in this forum and on TV is a big thing in sports....it can carry you to victory when victory seems lost or losing momentum can lead to defeat when victory seemed secure. Surely MOS and LaPo and Hall understand that so why then do they lay back, become predictable. As has been said here almost appears they outthink themselves. Will we win in November, that remains to be seem but unless the coaches change their approach our momentum is lost I fear.

Interesting article in the FP by Doug Brown this morning. Couldn't agree more with his comments and in fact many comments on this forum are repeated in his article. It starts at the top and filters down to the players. If the top is complacent then that filters down to the players and results in a lack of execution and urgency. So well said
-
Totally agree with DD. If we can’t beat a team with their #1 QB playing what are we saying...we want the refs to win it for us? Yes he likely should have been ejected but that is not the story of winning or losing....it is the play of the team starting with the coaching down to the execution. The players played well in the first half even though there were a few breakdowns.....the second half MTC adjusted we did too in the wrong way ...playing not to lose instead of playing to win. Same story for the 4 losses this year and even going back to last year. Until the mentality of the coaches change this will repeat itself time and again

you know Bomber Ball You don't seem to be able to handle other people's opinions that might be contradictory to yours. That is too bad as you will never grow up being like that. I totally understand that others do not possess the same opinions as I do however I thought this was an opinion chat forum where people could post their opinions without personal acts such as those you have displayed here. My personal opinion regardless of what you think is he is not worth the time and effort and has demonstrated "his" style ever since he started in hockey and that is from a reputable source. Whether you agree or not is your's to own and one would hope that should you disagree, which you obviously do, that you could articulate your thoughts in a more constructive meaningful way. Guess you haven't got there yet.

and he had last year and previous years been the worst plus/minus on the team...last year by double the next lowest. Further close to half his goals and point come on the power play....Year after year. Now that teams know wheeler is looking for him guess what happens...his goals go down. And yes he hasn’t done it on his own far from it the other 4 on the ice work their butts off so he can lollygog his way back into his own end and slam his stick on the ice when the other team scores. Think we have to call it what it is lazy self centered one dimensional player who at best gets a bridge deal to show if he has learned after 5 years in the league then get rid of him because he won’t learn anything

Just read a report of laine’s Comments while in Finland. Just goes to show the type of player he is....selfish and only interested in himself! A one way hockey player who doesn’t understand team responsibilities and what it means to be a two way player. By the sounds of it he doesn’t want to play in Winnipeg and figures he knows better than anyone else where he should play. Reminds me of his comment when Matthews was selected first and him second. Get rid of the guy he is a detriment to the team...good bye as fast as you can

Chris Streveler - Has your opinion changed?
Old Bomber Fan replied to B-F-F-C's topic in Blue Bomber Discussion
Not sure what game ebb was watching....Augustine 75 yds on 16 carries and 2 receptions for 63 yds and one TD. I think that is as good a day as you can expect from Harris and I am a Harris fan. I think the bombers are going to have to be careful in the off season as I doubt they want to lose Streveler Augustine and a few others. They have great depth and a real upcomer in Streveler -
We think the same and have been for several years
-
That's what I mean they were great for the second half except for the last 3 minutes. Sask exploited the zone defense and marched down the field. Just my thought but had we played a little more man and had Bighill been in coverage rather than rushing I think it may have been different...who knows just a thought as the receivers were so wide open
-
our OC and DC are the problem with this team. One outthinks himself and can't get out of his own way. The other is to stubborn to realize zone defense doesn't work when you are playing to win the game. Giving the opposition receivers 10+ yards to catch a ball is laughable at best. Tighter coverage and much better tackling would have won that game in spite of everything else.

Labour Day Classic GAMEDAY THREAD
Old Bomber Fan replied to Atomic's topic in Blue Bomber Discussion
I said it two years ago and will say it again, our OC and DC are not what everyone says they are. We have been told we need to improve talent....we did this and believe this year we have some of the best talent on both sides of the ball yet the same result.....minimal scoring on offense and cannot stop the opposition when it counts most. I'm not saying either didn't play well, I'm saying that they are not able to play to their potential because of the game plan put in place. To have the opposition start at their what 8 yard line with less than 2 minutes to go and not be able to hold them is frankly inexcusable. To have a quarter of football with a net production of -10 yards is inexcusable. The talent as we have been told is there and if it is what is causing this? Augustine had close to 100 yds rushing; we had over 300 yards in total offense; we had 3 sacks I believe in the game. Based on that one would think considering past stats that this game would have been a win. However when you play zone defense and give receivers 10+ yards to make a catch the result in normally an opposition will move the ball sufficient to end the game as Sask did today. Sask played a good game too so full credit to them. We played as well as we can but there is something nagging at me that says we are not allowing our players to play to their full potential. -
Bombers release Chris Matthews
Old Bomber Fan replied to trueBlue83's topic in Blue Bomber Discussion
He isn’t a slot receiver destined for short hooks etc. He was always successful downfield on slants and posts where he could use his speed and height. Hurts us when he went to Edmonton and again in Calgary will hurt us again used properly
