Jets Prospects

Kyle Connor has 48 point in 27 games an average of 1.7787 points per game .

Dylan Larkin had 47 points in 35 games for the same team last year for an average of 1.343 points per game .

Jack Eichel had 71 points in 40 games in his last year of college for  an average of 1.775 points per game .

I see Connor making the team in the fall and actually signing in March and getting a couple of weeks on the Jets roster at the end of the season.

I am hoping to see Connor on one wing with Wheeler or Ehlers or Armia on the other wing with Scheif or Matthews at center.

Going forward... Connor Scheif Wheeler Armia Ehlers and Matthews/Laine/Puljujärvi look like a pretty solid top 6 for a few years.

Lemieux, Roslovic, Petan, Copp, Lowry, Harkins, De Leo,  Lipon, and Spacek will be fighting for roster spots sooner or later.

We have Comrie and Helle and Phillips for depth in goal and look to be set for some time.

Our D, on the other hand, needs some help on the depth. Besides Morrissey, there isn't much coming up the pike on the left hand side and I fully expect the Jets to take some LHD at this draft or trade for one by this time next year. There is Sami Niku and not much else. The RHD right now is very good but not a great deal coming up the pike. Hopefully Kostalek makes the team in at least a 3rd pairing position and hopefully Glover and/or Poolman and/or Nogier turn out.

Would he not be thrown back in the draft?

No. Like other four-year uni players, after a certain date, he can sign as a UFA anywhere he wants.

To muddy the waters a little more, they still have to sign an entry level contact and are subject to RFA rules after that contract expires, it is just that they can do it with any team they choose.

So not completely a "UFA".  An RFA that can sign with a team of their choosing.

Thanks to a game built around stickhandling, the Jets have a tantalizing prospect in Nathan Smith

Quote

For many players, a sub-point per game 20-year-old USHL season, average skating and size, and erratic decision-making would hardly register on the prospect radar. But Smith’s not an ordinary prospect. It’s visible in his, quite frankly, ridiculous stick skills and his atypical hockey background.

Smith was born, raised and trained in Florida, making him the first player of that status to be drafted into the NHL. He started with street hockey and then roller hockey, before converting to ice hockey later than many.

Two seasons ago, in Smith’s first year of draft eligibility, he was playing High School in Florida. Then, he went took a massive step up to the USHL and was instantly Cedar Rapids’ best player.

The Jets took a gamble Smith, banking on him continuing that upward development curve. Smith will have time to do it. He’ll join Minnesota State University next season, reunited with his Mitchell High linemate, Lucas Sowder.

Its a standard ELC and those are good stats for a kid playing against men.

And, you still need to draw him over to North America. He could have stayed in Sweden.

He signed 2 year deal last year i read so he should be still there unless he's got some sort of Vesa escape clause.

Did not know that Wheeler was a draft dodger.

Wheeler was drafted by Arizona and refused to sign. Actually, Wheeler had huge character issues..honestly, if we go back in time to his draft and The Jets existed, i dont think they would have taken him at that time.. Wheeler was a real prick with major attitude problems in his younger days. Def a player the Jets wouldn't take. Hes matured but in his early career, serious attitude issues

Edited by Goalie

I haven't heard that about Wheeler before (i.e. character issues).  Is that based on him not signing with his draft team, an extrapolation of "ruffled feathers" or some specific off-ice or dressing room issues from back then?  I know he was an off-the-board pick when the Gretzky-led Coyotes drafted him right out of high school.   I also think it is pretty well known that he is an intense guy, so I could see how that might rub some people the wrong way.
