Kyle Connor has 48 point in 27 games an average of 1.7787 points per game .

Dylan Larkin had 47 points in 35 games for the same team last year for an average of 1.343 points per game .

Jack Eichel had 71 points in 40 games in his last year of college for  an average of 1.775 points per game .

I see Connor making the team in the fall and actually signing in March and getting a couple of weeks on the Jets roster at the end of the season.

I am hoping to see Connor on one wing with Wheeler or Ehlers or Armia on the other wing with Scheif or Matthews at center.

Going forward... Connor Scheif Wheeler Armia Ehlers and Matthews/Laine/Puljujärvi look like a pretty solid top 6 for a few years.

Lemieux, Roslovic, Petan, Copp, Lowry, Harkins, De Leo,  Lipon, and Spacek will be fighting for roster spots sooner or later.

We have Comrie and Helle and Phillips for depth in goal and look to be set for some time.

Our D, on the other hand, needs some help on the depth. Besides Morrissey, there isn't much coming up the pike on the left hand side and I fully expect the Jets to take some LHD at this draft or trade for one by this time next year. There is Sami Niku and not much else. The RHD right now is very good but not a great deal coming up the pike. Hopefully Kostalek makes the team in at least a 3rd pairing position and hopefully Glover and/or Poolman and/or Nogier turn out.

Thats the thing right?  The argument is oh Matthews is way better because he's playing on the third line.  Well...why is he playing on the third line if he's so good?  its not like the Leafs are Pittsburgh.  So it works both ways. To me the obvious thing is that Laine has more goals, more points, better plus/minus and less games.  Im not sure there is enough "gut feelings" to say Matthews has had the better rookie season, which is what the Calder is about.  Its not about who has the best next decade.

If it ended today, Laine is the Rookie of the Year.  But who knows what happens over the next 15 or so games.

People just keep pointing out that he's playing with rookies, so why not look at the match ups?!?!

Seems to me a lot of the buzz about looking at who a player is playing with is coming from the Toronto media.  When have you ever heard an argument like this before for rookie of the year?

Truth is, unless the stats they put up are an absolute blowout, Toronto media will find any excuse to pump up / vote for Matthews over Laine.  

Another way to look at it. Matthews took worst team in league to playoffs.

Well, no. If the Leafs make the playoffs, it's Babs who took them there.  Matthews is a huge part, but equally so are Marner, Nylander, Reilly & Mr.Anderson.

The only awards league's hand out where record should come into play is coach of the year and most VALUABLE player.  

As the ROY is a "most outstanding" award - team record means bupkis.    <IMO anyways.

Poolman plays on the right, no? 

And, even if he gets a couple of games with the Jets this year, he'll need a season or two in the AHL before he's ready to jump. If he's ever ready to jump!

Bring up Poolman and Green next year, and let our grizzled vets like Morrissey and Laine mentor them.

Watching Calgary last night I am thinking that's a sleeper team that could go far in the play-offs, especially with a hot goalie.  Talk about players buying into a system.  They were out-hustled the Jets all over the ice, even up 3-0.  Never any quit.

Laine would win it hands down if Maurice kept him with Scheif and played him on the 1st PP unit...  

If it ended today Im voting Laine.  More goals, more points, less games, better plus/minus.  The less games really makes a difference.  Even if they were tied, Laine gets the edge.  Better season = Laine.

Both pretty cold right now and Matthews can easily go on a tear, so could Laine.

If Laine can score 40 (seems tough now) he'd be only the second 18 year old to ever do it.  The first?  Dale Hawerchuk.  Would be fitting for him to be #2.

Maurice will put him on the third line to help him learn the defensive game for the last ten...  good in the long-term...  get him some 'sand'

Laine should have scored on that play in OT last night where he deked three Predators out of their jock straps.  Because he didn't score, Matthews has my vote.

I thought something similar.  Had he scored on that play, they would have etched his name on the trophy that night.
