Around the NHL

Catch all thread for discussing other NHL teams/news.

Up first:  Pittsburgh Penguins, my secondary team to cheer for.

I guess their worst start since Sid's rookie year could be because of their lousy defense.  Or bad coaching.  Or Kessel.

But in reality its because I took Fleury in my pool every year for 10 years until last year when I was fed up, he has his best year ever and then I took him this year and now he sucks.

But really, whats the deal?  They might be the first to can their coach.

Great point Goalie. Edmonton ignored D. They could be a lot further ahead. Then again they got McDavid. Jets are bigger and tougher. If both teams become contenders around the same time I like our ad and goalies for the win.

I wouldn't say they ignored the D.  At least they haven't through the draft where defense has made up about 35% of their draft picks over the last 10 years.

They've just drafted really really  sh***y!   If you look at their draft record since 2005, only Klefbom, Nurse & Jeff Petry play in the NHL regularly out of 21 picks, and they don't have Petry anymore.  The majority of the other picks either never made it to the NHL or only played a couple games.

Having said that,  outside of 2009, where they picked Paajarvi over Ryan Ellis, they picked the right guys (at the time) with their 1st pick.

I feel like its more their development system...  They HAD to take RNH, David Musil was not a bad pick, they ruined SChultz and Petry - Nurse, Klefbom and Reinhart should work out

Yakupov over Murray was a big mistake.

Yep, forgot about Murray.  That'd be one I'd bet they wish they could take back.

Shitty but you have to control your stick. Hopefully give Armia more time to show his stuff.

Peluso will draw in. Bet thorburn plays with Ladd and Lowry

I'd like to see Perreault Little Armia.

Ehlers Little Wheeler

Perreault Scheif Armia

Ladd Lowry thorburn

Peluso copp Burmi

Could switch Burmi and Thorbs

Not surprised. He and Kessel seemed like social media troublemakers.

They'd get a lot for him and just about guarantee top 3 pick.

Buff being off the market cant hurt his value either.

Wow. That'll take a while to digest. Ridding themselves of Phaneuf's contract has to equal a win for Tor.

Freeing up cash for Stamkos....

WTF!  Holy smokes.  Thats a big one.

Someone more familiar with all the players,  dissect this one and tell me how I should feel about it!

Would be the biggest mistake of that man's career, imo.

So basically Dion for Cowen Greening Michalek. A cap dump in greening and ufa to be Michalek. Then ahl players for ahl players

Interesting, Phaneuf has 5 years remaining at $7m.  So basically Buff and Dion are about the same now.  Sure glad we have Buff and not Dion.

My Leafs co workers are jumping for joy....  apparently they are not retaining any salary at all either.

From the more knowledgeable hockey guys in the office it seems like this trade was great for the Leafs since they will likely re-trade some of the guys they got for more prospects and they unload that awful contract.     The Sens lose a better stay at home d-man and take on a crappy contract on a player who is rapidly diminishing.

This should also kill the notion that any player is un-tradeable. In less than 12 months, the Leafs have moved Clarkson and Phaneuf, and didn't get butchered in either deal.

Also why, if we HAD to, I'd have given Buff 6 or 7 years. Anyone's always moveable.

Whats the motivation on the Sens' part to take this on?

This is a whole lot of mediocre hockey players swapping places. The only reason it's a big deal is because its Toronto and Ottawa. If this deal happened between Florida and Tampa Bay it would barely be discussed.
