Goalie Posted December 27, 2016 Report Share Posted December 27, 2016 Not a big Jays fan but it seemed like they were basically.. hit a home run or strike out... they couldn't really manufacture runs. It was via long ball or nothing. I actually think that they might be better than people think without Edwin and Bautista. Not sure why. But I look around the league and I see teams winning via playing the short game if you will... the long ball teams are pretty inconsistent actually. Christ..... last year was an uncharacteristic awful year. You arent paying him for last year, you are paying him for the potential MVP he could be. Strained shoulder/knee/toe arent the type of thing that shuts down a hitter for multiple years. And the shoulder was furthest back now. This is still a guy who hit over .800 ops last year. and well into the 900s over the previous 6. If he plays most of the season chances of him coming in .750 (which is still really good) and 30/100 are tiny. Hes perfect to have protecting josh donaldson. Hes 36 frank thomas was 38, hit .857 ops 26hr 95 rbi in 155g. Bautista hit .817 22/69 in 116g. The jays cant be done yet. But this is still a good pick up/bring back. Christ..... wasn't he asking for (unconfirmed) 4 years @ $25M per year mid way through last year... this signing makes sense... that's the market price for a slugger and they aren't locked in after this year if his play drops significantly... He was never even a great defender, he was a great arm with decent range before he started to decline. Last year he was border line a liability with the great arm. Previous to last year the bombers were operating considerably under the cap while teams like MTL spent like drunk sailors. Edwin also took less money then the jays offered. Its been the jays refusal to match other teams in length of term. no one is going to take a 3-4 year deal over a 5-6+ year deal with the same pay each year. Not to mention the lack of willingness to dip into FA at the cost of draft picks under the previous regime. Plus plenty of teams have tried to buy a winner with no success. wbbfan Posted February 4, 2017 Report Share Posted February 4, 2017 Catchers and pitchers report for spring training on the 14th for the jays. 18th is the first work out of all jays players. JP howell, probably the best LHP out of the pen previous to last year and jarrod saltalamacchia round out the jays pick ups so far this winter. I like howell to rebound, and fit in great with our pen. Could still use another arm or two there. I like saltalamacchia as the back up catcher too. Vlady jr is up to 34th prospect in baseball. And could really shoot up this year. Sean reid foley could take a big jump in competition this year too. Though none of the top 5 are likely to be up this year or maybe early next either. Donaldson says it's going to make managing against the Blue Jays lineup tougher (not all righties) which is a good thing. This team can still hit with the best of them and considering how the pitching has come together (if it's as strong as last season) they will definitely be a contender for at least a wild card IMO. It's not like these games were blowouts and couldn't have been won by the Jays, extra innings in game 1 and 2 costly homers given up by Happ is all it took. I agree though, need some better production at the plate. Defensively tho they look great for game 2. Loved that catch by Pillar tonight, and that diving catch by Bautista in game 1 that he got the double play out with that toss to first.
