Odds and Sods - Game 1 - Bombers at Riders

49th season opener....

Last time we won a game in Regina...

.....I could still remember everything...

Tonight, offense jelled...but defense was mostly Jello....

Easy to play O, when people actually block for the QB/RB's

Drew Willy took full advantage of the situation....

....with poise, good reads and a precise short passing game.....

...to the tune of 22 of 25 325 yds and 3 tds.

Outstanding game, from Paris Cotton....100+ rush yds....

...breaking tackles, and getting YAC in the passing game....

RB Marshall has some pretty good wiggle and speed....

....for a big power back.....with 2 TDs

That 2 back system looked real good today....

....and really provides more options....in the redzone...

KR Velting showed potential....had 65 yd return called back

Rough first half for Bryant.... but was very strong down the stretch...

Good game from J. Daniels on that right side....

Chung did not look out of place....in his debut...

Overall, huge passing grade, against vaunted Rider D-line

Moore had his first TD and a productive game....

Denmark still best receiver on the team....

Durant goes down with torn Achilles tendon...ending 1st half.....

Rider's questionable depth....tested early, with multiple injuries

For most part, Bombers controlled ball and clock, with their O...

But, DC Hall's tenure...off to shaky start......

Gap cancellation almost non-existent....on D

....as Bombers victimized by 3 long TD plays

...and a number of other big gains...

Soft coverages and lack of pressure up front.....

....completed the dismal picture...

Hurl was underwhelming at MLB.....

Big jump ball INT by Adams on goal-line.....

Parts of that game....turned into flag fest...

Riders had some problems understanding new illegal contact rules.....

Back and forth game......the Bomber O took...

....and the D gave back....until the last 2 minutes.....

Bombers then managed some stops....

....and gave Riders taste of own medicine....

...as they ran the clock out to seal the win.....

And that gin..... turned out nice again......

I'm just at halftime now. Some good misdirection play calls on offense, especially on the goal line, one resulted in a TD. Nice mix of run and pass. Not as much reliance on the deep ball, compared to

Going into the game they were considered one of the better defenses in the league.

Totally forgot hall played for the riders. Daniels did a Damn good job for sure

Who got called for the bonehead illegal block causing Veltung's return TD to be nullified?

It was a really clean return with lanes open and pure speed.

On the replay, it looked like Cronk or Pontbriand crashed a Rider from behind but I don't want to point fingers at an innocent bystander.

Anyone get a good look to ID the guilty party? We had too many of those ST penalties las year and you'd hope MOS and the other coaches would lay down the law.

Picard is awesome when he's on your team.

Right at the point of attack too, without that illegal block there may not have been much of a return to regret.

Watching our OL again, on film, in their first game together, gives me the warm and fuzzies.....

No it wasn't, it happened in the middle of the field and by then veltung had already picked left side and was motoring..

Your definition of "point of attack" is certainly different from mine .. Pontbriand was about 10 yards away from the returner when he engaged the Rider player .. really didn't need to touch him at that point as there was already a decent seam for Veltung to hit.

Yeah that penalty was completely unnecessary and contributed nothing to the return.  Take away that penalty and the right call being made on the Demski safety and this game wouldn't have been nearly as close.

It was away from the Play, Veltung was already gone pretty much at that point but like JBR said in another thread, the bombers did manage to score a TD on the following drive.

But yeah, maybe if the refs caught the illegal block on washington by smith i think on Messams big TD run, it wouldn't have been as close as it seemed.

A lot of shocking things in that game really, the TOP being so close was very surprising, to me it seemed like the bombers definitely controlled the game, They would drive down field, only 1 2 and out, i mean i dunno, but apparently it was very close, only a minute or so apart, but watching the game twice even, It certainly appeared as tho the bombers dominated time of possession.

Was it the Oline or is it the Gin???

It is the result, that counts....
