The Blue Bombers added another international receiver to the roster on Tuesday, signing Alabama-raised Derrick Hector.

The 6-foot-3, 220-pound Hector played two years of collegiate football at Morehouse, where he put away 10 touchdowns and over 1,000 receiving yards in 87 receptions. Most recently, he played in six games for the Professional Indoor Football League’s Richmond Raiders, notching 20 catches for 246 yards and three majors.

Oxendine signs

Former Citadel defensive end Justin Oxendine has signed a contract with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers of the Canadian Football League.

Oxendine, at 6-3 and 255 pounds an all-SoCon performer, had 37 tackles last season with 10.5 tackles for loss and 7.5 sacks and was named to the all-SoCon team.

 

 

 

ON OXENDINE: Coming off a huge season in 2013 which culminated in the defensive lineman earning spots on the first-team Media All-Conference and second-team Coaches' All-Conference teams … leads all active Bulldogs with 14.5 career tackles for loss ... big, strong player who is expected to have another solid year on the defensive front ... enters his final season with 71 career tackles, 14.5 tackles for loss, 5.5 sacks and two passes defended.

 

JUNIOR (2013): Played and started in all 12 games on the defensive line ... earned first-team Media All-Conference and second-team Coaches' All-Conference honors ... led the team with 11.5 tackles for loss and 4.5 sacks ... recorded 2.5 tackles for loss, including one sack for a loss of 14 yards, against Furman ... forced a fumble and recovered it in an overtime win over Appalachian State ... made seven tackles in three different games - Wofford, Western Carolina and Georgia Southern ... made 46 tackles, 11.5 tackles for loss, 4.5 sacks, two forced fumbles and one fumble recovery ... had 1.5 sacks and one forced fumble in a win over VMI.

 

SOPHOMORE (2012): Played in all 11 games and started four … recorded 21 tackles, two tackles for loss, one forced fumble and two fumble recoveries on the season … recovered fumbles in each of the first two contests of the season … posted a season-high five tackles and forced one fumble vs. Samford.

 

FRESHMAN (2011): Played in eight games as a redshirt freshman, including six of the final seven ... had four tackles and a sack and also shared another tackle for loss ... had three of his tackles and his quarterback takedown vs. VMI.

 

HIGH SCHOOL: A 2010 graduate of Sumter High School ... lettered three times in football and also competed on the basketball, track and field and competitive weightlifting teams ... made 101 tackles, 32 tackles for loss, 12 sacks and four forced fumbles his senior season ... selected the Big 16 Lower State Lineman of the Year, team's defensive MVP and earned a berth on the all-region and all-area squads ... named team's lineman of the week seven times and was a two-time team defensive player of the week ... helped team reach state championship game in 2009.

 

PERSONAL: Son of Cory and Valerie Oxendine ... majoring in physical education - sport management and administration.

I always find it odd that Kirk rarely, if ever, seems to mention these things before the MBB Twitter account does. Always appreciate the fact that Darrin Bauming will at least acknowledge how he finds these unannounced signings. Must be pure coincidence with Kirk.

 

Anyways ... I like this guy. Good motor. Good size and speed for a DE.

Morehouse WR Derrick Hector is a tall athletic receiver at 6-4 215 lbs that has good size and uses his frame well to shield away opponents. He gets vertical on defenders and fights to make the reception. He also displays good eye/hand coordination and shows strong hands when making tough catches over the middle.

Hector looks smooth coming out of his breaks but tends to get a little high sometimes when setting up his routes. He clutches the ball into his body on some intermediate routes and needs to work on consistently catching the ball more with his hands. He also needs to work on coming back to the quarterback on certain pass plays.

Hector was one of the biggest receivers during the HBCU Bowl week and impressed NFL scouts in practices with how fluid he looked releasing off the line with quick top speed and also his burst when selling the deep route.

Hector uses his size and strength to his advantage and gives good effort blocking downfield. He also showed his ability as a red zone threat consistently winning the jump ball battle against just about every defensive back he faced. Hector put up productive numbers considering the offense he played in and was also a two time all conference performer. A good pro day will increase his chances on receiving an opportunity in training camp. Hector has the size, speed and receiver skills to play at the next level and could be a good candidate as a fifth receiver. He will have to pull together a complete game in training camp and quickly adjust to better competition to give himself the best opportunity to make an active NFL roster or practice squad.

I like the part in his scouting report that he's a good downfield blocker and that he always beats DB's in the red zone on jump balls.
